Last weekend saw Wonder Woman 1984 at the top of the UK box office, and the movie is likely to remain there this week with no new cinema releases.

There are a couple of new movies hitting VOD this week, Soul and One Night in Miami.

Soul

  • The movie is from director Pete Docter and Kemp Powers
  • It is their directorial debut.
  • It stars Jamie Foxx who last starred in Just Mercy (2020).
  • The film also stars Tina Fey who last appeared in Whiskey Tango Foxtrot (2016).

One Night In Miami

  • This new release stars Kingsley Ben-Adir who's last film was Noelle (2019)
  • It also stars Eli Goree who appeared in Race (2016).
  • The film is brought to us by new director Regina King.

Jumanji: The Next Level moves up the chart to the top on its second week of release removing Frozen II while Sonic The Hedgehog is the top new film.

Jumanji: The Next Level

After making its debit last week at number 2 the Dwayne Johnson starring sequel movie moves to the top of the home entertainment charts.

The movie was a big hit in the UK and US at the end of 2019 where it took nearly $800 Million globally.

Frozen II

Disneys smash hit sequel movie falls to to number 2 this week after sitting at the top for three weeks since its release.

Sonic the Hedgehog

Starring Jim Carrey along with a CGI blue hedgehog the movie is a video game adaptation from Sega's long running series which started in 1991.

The movie was a surprise smash at the box office in mid February and it took £18 Million in the UK and $146 Million in the US before the COVID-19 pandemic closed all cinemas.

Knives Out

Rian Johnsons smash hit movie falls to number 4 this week after 4 weeks on the home entertainment charts.

Trolls

Making a return to the top 5 this week as people reminds themselves of the movie before the sequel Trolls World Tour hits streaming this week.

The movie came out late in 2016 and was a big hit during its box office run where it took £24 Million over 14 weeks in the UK and took $344 Million globally.

Having been in American cinemas on limited release for a couple of weeks (allowing it to be considered on the awards season) 1917 goes on wide release and takes over at the top of the US box office from Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker while comedy Like A Boss is the top new film.

1917

Sam Mendes was epic makes its way to the top of the US box office after 3 weeks on limited release to a weekend gross of $36.5 Million.

The movies total gross after 3 weeks of release of $39.2 Million, the film has been nominated for various awards like Best Feature at the Oscars and has already won Best Drama at the golden globes which can only increase its total gross.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

After 3 weeks at the top the final movie in the Skywalker saga falls from the top to number 2 with a weekend take of $15 Million.

This puts the J.J. Abrams directed movies total US gross after 4 weeks at $478.1 Million, behind both the other entries in the sequel trilogy.

The movie is the highest total grossing movie on this weeks box office.

Jumanji: The Next Level

The sequel movie starring Dwayne Johnson and Jack Black falls to number 3 this week with $14 Million giving the movie a 5 weeks total gross of $257.1 Million.

Like a Boss

Highest new film of the week enters the US box office at number 4 with this corporate comedy staring Rose Byrne and Tiffany Haddish which takes $10 Million on its debut weekend.

Just Mercy

Director Destin Daniel Cretton's movie climbs to number 5 this week as the movie is put on wide release and takes $10 Million on its 3rd weekend of release, the film has taken $10.5 Million in total.

Frozen II

Disney's smash hit animated film is at 8 this week having taken $459.3 Million over 8 weeks, the longerst on this week chart.

This week At the UK box office the little yellow Minions held off the highest new film quite comfortably to gain a second week a the top.

With a £4.15 million weekend the Minions has brought its total gross to £27.6 million, which ahead of both of the Despicable Me film from the same series.

Rolling into second place is Ted 2, Ted was a massive surprise hit back in 2012 taking nearly £12 million on it's opening weekend, Ted 2 has taken £3.8 on it's debut and will struggle to get over £10 million in total.

Other new films this week are Love and Mercy at number 9 and Song of The Sea at number 10.

Historical Charts

A Year ago - Transformers: Age of Extinction took over at the top of the UK box office on its debut knocking down Mrs. Brown's Boys D'Movie to number 3.

Five years ago - The Twilight Saga: Eclipse entered the chart at the top knocking Shrek Forever After down to number 2.

Ten years ago - War of The Worlds held its own at the top while the highest new film was The Descent which enters at number 3.

Fifteen years ago - Chicken Run continued to dominate the box office at the top while this highest new entry was at number 3 in the shape of The Patriot.

Twenty years ago - The Batman franchise was still thriving and Batman Forever entered the box office at the top, First Knight fell to number 2.

Twenty Five years ago - Back to The Future Part III was entering at the top while Dick tracy fell to number 2.

With no big new releases this week the video chart is left to the mercy of the ver present Frozen which duly goes back to the top of the video chart, in it's 36th week.

Last week top film, The Inbetweeners 2, falls just a single place to 2 this week after just 1 week at the top.

Highest new film of the week as it 3, The Expendables 3, starring a whole host of movie tough guys including Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The Expendables 3 was release in UK cinemas on 15th August where it debuted at number 3. It had a short UK box office run of just 3 weeks.

During that time it grossed £3.7 million never climbing highest than 3. It is by far the lowest grossing of the franchise to date.

Other new film this week are: One Direction Where We Are at 15 and The Nut Job at 17
