News from around the web

Getting a head start on the box office with a Tuesday release, Ticket To Paradise makes its debut on the box office this weekend at the top when including previews worth £1 Million, Dont Worry Darling comes in at number 2 which would have been on top if counting weekend gross only.

Coming it at number 3 this weekend is the 4K re-release of Avatar giving a bit of comfort to Disney to the popularity of the franchise just before the release of Avatar: THe Way of Water in December.

UK box office QuickView

  • Number 1 - Ticket to Paradise (1st Weekend)
  • Highest debut - Ticket to Paradise (@1)
  • Longest run - Top Gun: Maverick (18 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - Top Gun: Maverick (£83.1 Million)

UK weekend box office top 5 breakdown 23rd - 25th September 2022

Highest new movie this weekend

The movie should have been released last weekend but got delayed due to the passing of The Queen and so its got a Tuesday release this week which by Friday gave it a £1 Million jump on the box office.

The movie starring George Clooney and Julia Roberts in their first team up since the 2016 movie Money Monster takes £2.8 Million on its opening week with £1.7 Million of that taken over the Friday to Sunday weekend.

The movie starring Florence Pugh and directed by Olivia Wilde has caused a fair amount of headlines over the past weeks concerning its star and director not getting on too well, but the movie lands at number 2 on the box office this weekend, and number 1 if you remove the 3 day headstart Ticket To Paradise got.

The movie takes a very respectable £2.7 Million on its debut, which given the controversy and the story of the movie is not bad.

It will be interesting to see the drop off next weekend and if the film can appeal to a broader audience than the hard core fans of the main leads including Harry Styles, Chris Pine, Gemma Chan and Olivia Wilde herself.

Disney are either testing the waters here or trying to get everyone re-invested in 3D and the franchise before the release of the sequel Avatar: The Way of Water in December, but the highest grossing movie of all time gets another shot at box office grosses this weekend.

The movie lands at number 3 this week in an all new 4K, 3D version of the movie with a gross of £1.2 Million which is not bad given the movie has already taken over £90 Million at the UK box office.

It will be interesting to see the drop off next weekend given the rumour that a number of tickets were sold to people thinking this was the sequel.

Last weeks top movie falls to number 4 this weekend after a couple of weeks at the top with a gross of £473,221, a large 52% drop from last weekend.

This gives the movie a total gross of £3.6 Million after 3 weeks at the top.

Moonage Daydream

Landing on the box office last weekend in limited release and becoming the highest debut at number 10 the David Bowie documentary goes wide this week and jumps to number 5 with a gross of £375,398.

This is a 52% increase over last weekend, but no surprise really given the increase in cinema count, the movie has taken £676,185 in total over 2 weeks.

This weekend marks the lowest grossing total weekend since 4th September 2020 when Tenet was the top movie of the weekend and the country was still in the grips of the COVID-19 pandemic.

See How They Run~2020 remains at the top for a second weekend while the only new movie of the weekend is the David Bowie documentary Moonage Daydream at number 10.

UK box office QuickView

  • Number 1 - See How They Run~2022 (2nd Weekend)
  • Highest debut - Moonage Daydream (@10)
  • Longest run - Top Gun: Maverick (17 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - Top Gun: Maverick (£82.8 Million)

UK weekend box office top 5 breakdown 16th - 19th September 2022

Remaining at number 1 this weekend is the comedy murder mystery from director Tom George starring Saoirse Ronan which takes £984,779 on its second weekend of release, a small 15% drop from last weekend.

The movie remains at the top largely because there was no major new release on the box office this weekend, the movie has taken £2.8 Million over its 2 weeks of release.

When there is nothing new at the cinema people go and see the old movies they missed, hence the Brad Pitt action/comedy jumps back up to number 2 from 8 on its 7th weekend of release with £325,252, a small 6% drop over last weekend.

The movie has taken £10.3 Million at the UK box office over its 7 weeks of release.

Another big movie jumping back up the box office is the sequel movie to Minions which jumps back from 5 to 3 on its 12th weekend with £321,746, a 16% drop over last weekend.

The Despicable Me universe movie has now taken £45.1 Million in the UK over its 17 weeks and is the second top movie of 2022 in the UK.

Making a magnificent movie back into the top 5 bouncing from 9th to 4th is the movie of the summer which takes £320,963 on its 17th weekend on the box office, and this weekend gross is an amazing 3% higher than last weekend.

The movie is the top film of 2022, and will end up that way by the end of the year as Avatar: The Way of Water wont have the steam to get past a billion in 2022 as its release is so late in the year.

The movie is also the 8th top movie of all time in the UK having jumped over Star Wars: The Last Jedi this week, I would say the £89 Million of Avengers: Endgame is out of its range but you simply never know with this film!

The animated feature from the Warner Bros. DC Universe jumps one place to number 5 this weekend with £307,920, a 16% drop over last weekend.

the movie has taken £14.8 Million in the UK over its 8 weeks of release.

Moonage Daydream
