News from around the web

For the first time in who knows how many weeks the top film of the week remains the same as last week with The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel holding into the top spot.

With Fifty Shades of Grey also holding on at number 2 the highest new film enters the chart at number 3 in the shape of the Will Smith starring Focus.

Focus was released into UK cinemas on 27th February of this year entering the chart at number 3 that week and making £1.9 million in weekend takings.

The rolling week it went up to number 2 but then slipped down the chart staying on the top 15 for a 6 week stint during which time it grossed £7.3 million.

Also new this week is Still Alice at number 5, Chappie at number 6, The Boy Next Door at number 12 and The Wedding Ringer at number 13, all of which had small chart runs this year.

This week sequel movie The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel makes its debut at the top of the UK box office chart.

The original cast returns for the sequel to the 2012 movie with the help of American star Richard Gere who is added to the cast to give it an ‘American' appeal.

The film takes £3.7 million on it's debut weekend which is far better than the £2.2 million of the original, that film had long lasting appeal, time will tell if this follows.

Falling into the runner up spot after 2 weeks at the top is Fifty Shades Of Grey, a third weekend gross of £2.5 million brings the total to £30.4 million making it by far not the best grossing film of 2015 to date.

Worth mentioning, if the chart were based on the full week ticket sales and not just the weekend, Fifty Shades of Grey would have retained it's position at the top with £5 million.

Other new films to enter the box office this week are: Focus at 3, The Boy Next Door at 7 and It Follows at 8.

Historical charts

A Year ago - The Logo Movie was still riding high at the top of the box office which Liam Neeson starred in the highest new film at 2 Non-Stop.

Five years ago - Avatar was still the top film in the UK while the highest new film was The Crazies which entered at number 3.

Ten years ago - Robert De Nero starred in the chiller Hide and Seek which entered at the top knocking Meet The Fockers down to number 2.

Fifteen years ago - There was no moving Toy Story 2 which spent another week at the top while the highest new film of the week was The Talented Mr. Ripley which entered at number 3.

US box office results 22nd January 2015: American Sniper still retains top spot Clint Eastwood's American Sniper has stayed at the top of the US box office for another weekend taking another $64 million in it's 5th weekend of release.

The heavily Oscar nominated film has now taken a total of over $200 million in the US, in his long film career it is not Eastwood's highest grossing movie.

The film still has plenty of milage to go and if it wins big at the Oscars the film could see another massive boost to it's US takings.

Highest new film of the week is Jennifer Lopez (jLo) in The Boy Next Door which takes $15 million on it's debut, one of the highest grosses she has had in a number of years.

Other new film this week are: George Lucas's animated take Strange Magic at 7 and Johnny Depps offbeat comedy Mortdecai at 9.

There is a bit of controversy circulating around the internet that early adopters of blu-ray disks will lack features of future Blu-ray disks, and although this is true some claims are being made that the early players will not play future disks.

Although the former statement is true, feature on some future disks will not be accessible on certain players, the latter is simply not true.

Lets put this into context, Blu-ray players have a profile, 1.0, 1.1 and in the near future 2.0. Features are categorised in these profiles so for example picture in picture on future disks are part of profile 1.1. If you have an early player that is only capable of 1.0 you will be able to play a 1.1 disk and get the full experience but you wont be able to access the picture in picture feature.

What impact does this have on the current blu-ray player owners? It seems for a majority it will have little impact. One of the reasons why early players are not future proof is that they cannot connect to the internet and so cant be upgraded, this is where the most popular Blu-ray player sold to date has the advantage.

By quite a large margin the best selling player with the largest install base is the Playstation 3 and this is a wireless device which connects to the internet no problem and has already been upgraded to profile 1.1 and the upgrade to 2.0 is just around the corner.

Good news in all this is that one of the standards being introduced for profile 2.0 is the ability to connect to the internet which means that any future upgrades wont be a problem.

If you have been a little bit of an early adopter and you bought a player after November last year then you are probably already set and any player bought then or after that date had to be at least profile 1.1. If you bought one before then just remember you can still watch the film without any loss of picture.

Early adopter generally know that by being the first person on the street to have the latest technology they will probably have an out dated device quicker than the guy next door who waited 2 years before taking the plunge.
