Night School Review | Movie - Empire  Empire Fri, 28th September 2018

There were three new entries at the top of this weeks UK box office in the shape of Venom, A Star Is Born and Johnny English Strikes Again, but it was Sony's Villain Hero film which took top honors.

Venom

The Tom Hardy starring film dominated what was a busy weekend at the UK box office with an £8 million debut which is good for a Marvel movie in the Spider-Man universe, and only a million off that of Spider-Man Homecoming from last year.

This of course is not from the MCU despite leaning heavily on the look and feel of a typical Marvel film, but as with Suicide Squad from last year this proves that villains can hold their own in a movie despite poor reviews.

Johnny English Stikes Again

The third in the Johnny English series of film and it looks like the Rowan Atkinson starring James Bond Spoof has lost none of its appeal as it makes its debut with £4.1 million which is in the same ball park as the other 2.

Both the other 2 films went on to make in the £20 million region and we would expect this one to do very similar business as its appealing to the same audience, this film has got less favourable reviews though.

A Star Is Born

It was a very fine margin but Johnny English just beat out A Star Is Born as the Bradley Cooper directed and starring film takes the third spot this week with a £4.1 million debut.

The House With a Clock In Its Walls

Three weeks on the box office now and the Jack Black starring film takes £900,00 over the weekend to boost its total UK gross to £6.8 million.

Night School

Taking a large tumble this week and finishing off the top 5 the Kevin Hart romantic comedy takes £860,000 to boost its 2 week UK gross to £3.1 million.

Incredibles 2

Having been on the box office for 13 weeks the Pixar animated comedy has taken an incredible £55.7 million making it the third highest grossing film of 2018.

Fighting it out for a place at the top of the box office were two film that couldn't be more different, Venom is a super villain movie from Sony and A Star Is Born is a romantic drama from Warner

Venom

The super villain movie based in the Spider-Man universe hit the right note with movie goers this weekend and scored an excellent $80 million debut.

The film stars Tom Hardy as the title character and is directed by Ruben Fleischer and despite mixed reviews sets records for an October debut in the US and has set up a new Marvel (not MCU) franchise.

A Star Is Born

Directed by Bradly Cooper and starring himself and Lady Ga Ga the dramatic comedy scored well with reviews but didn't quite have what it takes to beat a Marvel super villain (hero) movie and made its debut with $41.2 million, half that of Venom.

Smallfoot

The animated comedy is at number 3 this week with a second weekend gross of $14.9 million which brings the films total US gross to $42.7 million after 2 weeks of release.

Night School

After an impressive top spot debut last weekend the romantic comedy falls hard this week to number 4 after taking $12.2 million, this brings the films total gross to $46.7 million after 2 weeks of release.

The House With a Clock In Its Walls

The Eli Roth directed film has done really well at the box office and on its third week takes $7.2 million which brings the films total US gross to $55 million.

It was a tight fought battle at the top of the UK box office this weekend between Night School and last weeks top film The House With A Clock In Its Walls but the new comer won in the end.

Night School

Taking iver at the top the new romantic comedy starring Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish took the top with £1.59 million, a very slim margin of £0.05million.

Kevin Hart has appeared in some high profile film including Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle so this is a fairly low opening for him, for Tiffany Haddish who starred is the £8 million Girls Trip from 2017 this will go down as her second highest grossing film in the UK.

The House With a Clock In Its Walls

Taking top honors that week the Jack Black starring film nearly repeated this week but gets knocked down to 2 taking £1.54 million for the weekend, this boosts the films total to £5.5 million after 2 weeks.

A Simple Favour

The Paul Feig directed film falls to number 3 this week with just over a million pound weekend gross which takes to films UK gross to £3.4 million after 2 weeks.

Crazy Rich Asians

The American smash hit comedy is still doing well in the UK, although not bringing in the same success as across the pond, but a £0.7 million weekend puts the film at number 4 this week and boosts the total gross to £4.8 million.

The Nun

Halloween may be just around the corner but this horror film will be out the charts by then, sitting at 5 this week with a £0.6 million weekend brings it to a very respectable £10.5 million UK gross.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again

The sequel has done amazingly well in the UK and is the top total grossing film again this week, dropping to number 13 this week the film has a UK total gross of £65 million.

It probably wont outgross the original movie's £69 million which for a time was the UK's top film but it will be in the same ball park.

Smallfoot takes over at the top of the global box office ahead of Night School nocking The Nun from the top down to number 4.

Smallfoot

The Animated family comedy expands to 50 countries this week and takes $37 million at the global box office, this brings the films total gross to $38.6 million.

Night School

Making its debut at the global box office this week the film starring Kevin Heart and Tiffany Haddish is showing in 20 countries and takes $33.5 million.

The House With a Clock In Its Walls

The mystical comedy on its second week of release takes $21 million from 24 countries which boosts its total cume to $65.7 million.

The Nun

Still showing in 81 countries the horror film from the Conjuring universe takes $21.6 million which takes its total global gross to $330 million, its is now by far the top film within the Conjuring series of films.

Johnny English Strikes Again

Expanding to 41 countries this week the Rowan Atkinson starring film takes $14.2 million which takes the film total gross to $44.2 million.

Another change at he top of the US box office this week as romantic comedy Night School takes over from The House With a Clock In Its Walls on its debut weekend.

Night School

Starring Tiffany Haddish and Kevin Heart the Malcolm D. Lee directed movie took $28 million on its debut weekend of release wich was enough to take it to the top despite the poor critical response.

Smallfoot

Coming in at number 2 this week the animated comedy starring the voice of Channing Tatum could quite beat Night School and took $23 million for the weekend.

The House With a Clock In Its Walls

Falling from the top to number 3 this week on its second weekend the film took $12.5 million boosting its total US gross to over $44 million.

A Simple Favour

Dropping to number 4 this week the Paul Feig directed film takes $6.6 million on its second weekend to take its total US gross to $43 million.

The Nun

Finishing of the top five the horror film based in the Conjuring universe takes $5.4 million on its fourth weekend of release to take its total cume to $109 million making its top grossing film the the film universe.
