News from around the web

A little late reporting on this weeks charts with the figures arriving the following weekend due to the Christmas break.

UK audiences were in the mood for the Galaxy Far Far Away over the Christmas week with Rogue One staying at the top, maybe a fitting tribute as we said goodbye to Princess Leah.

With the new coming in over the festive period that actress Carrie Fisher sadly passed away what better tribute to pay than keeping Rogue One: A Star Wars Story at number one with £5.6 million on its second weekend.

This brings the films total gross to £33.9 million, an excellent gross in normal circumstances but this is a star wars film and the film is falling far short of last years Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens.

Highest new entry of the week is Passengers which after bad reviews still manages to land at number 2 with £2.4 million.

Both stars Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt are involved with high grossing franchises so this is by no means a big opening for them and with the no so good reviews the film could sink quite quick.

Longest running film on the chart this week is Trolls which has been around for 10 weeks not and highest total grossing movie is Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them which has now grossed £47,469,530 after 6 weeks.

Historical charts

A year ago - Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens was still the top film on its second weekend while top new film was Snoopy and Charlie Brown: The Peanuts Movie which entered at 2.

Five years ago - Arthur Christmas went back to the top over the festive weekend while the top new film was Don 2 which entered at number 6.

Ten years ago - Happy Feet stayed at the top for a third week while and with a static top 10 the top new film was Bhagam Bhag at number 11.

Fifteen years ago - Kicking off one of the greatest series of all time The Lord of The Rings: The Fellowship of The Ring entered the box office at the top knocking off Harry Potter and The Philosophers Stone after 5 weeks at the top.

Twenty years ago - 101 Dalmatians stayed at the top for a second weekend while Matilda was the top new film of the week at number 3.

Twenty five years ago - The Addams Family was the top film of the week for a second weekend while Suburban Commando was the top new film which entered at 3.

Another big week for new releases and for the second week in a row an all new top 3 on the video chart with Goosebumps leading the way.

Starring Jack Black the film was released at the UK cinema on 5th February 2016 where it entered the UK box office at number 1.

The following week the film fell to number 5 and had a relatively short 6 week stay on the UK box office before disappearing.

In that time though the film did manage to gross a fairly reasonable £8.5 million although this is quite low for a Jack Black film for which King Kong is his highest grossing movie.

Also for director Rob Letterman it is his lowest grossing movie to date.

The rest of the top 3 reads like: Snoopy and Charlie Brown: The Peanuts Movie is new at number 2 and Ride Along 2 is new at number 3.

Last weeks top film Spotlight falls right down to number 8 this week.

Soccer documentary Bobby is also new this week at number 12.

As the year comes to a close the last blockbuster of the year, The Force Awakens, is making a challenge for top film of the year, despite its late release.

This week Star Wars: The Force Awakens takes $286,822,000 which brings its total to just over $1 billion, it has taken about 10 days to do this, the fastest ever.

It needs to beat the year total of Jurassic World to become the top film of the year, $1.6 billion byt the end of the week may prove too much.

Highest new film of the week is Daddys Home which takes $43.2 million from 5 countries on its debut and sits at number 4.

Star Wars is also the top total grossing film on the chart this week and the only film on the chart to have a total gross over $1 billion.

Here is the full world top grossing box office.

  1. Star Wars: The Force Awakens - $286,822,000
  2. Devil And Angel - $55,000,000
  3. Mojin: The Lost Legion - $44,000,000
  4. Daddy's Home - $43,200,000

  9. The Himalayas - $14,500,000
  10. Sisters - $14,176,970

This week world box office chart has The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 staying at the top for a second week.

The last of The Hunger Games series takes $113 million from 93 countries this week which brings its total to $440 million in total world grosses.

This total is pushing the film to end its run as the lowest of the series but only a little.

None of the film on the top ten this week are new film but highest improved film is The Good Dinosaur which sits at number 2 this week with $67.9 million from 40 countries, the film has taken $84.2 million in total.

The Good Dinosaur has not had the best start to its cinematic run and will end up one of the lowest grossing Pixar movies.

The highest total grossing film on the box office this week is Spectre, $43 million this week and still released in 94 countries the film has grossed $750 million worldwide.

Here is the full top 10 -

  1. The Hunger Games: Mockinjay Part 2 - $113,600,000
  2. The Good Dinosaur - $67,892,000
  3. The Martian - $54,650,000
  4. Spectre - $43,200,000
  5. Creed - $32,380,000
  6. Our Times - $13,000,000
  7. Victor Frankenstein - $12,350,000
  8. Snoopy and Charlie Brown The Peanuts Movie - $9,700,000
  9. Inside Men - $9,700,000
  10. Bridge Of Spies - $8,376,000

The last instalment in The Hunger Games series makes its debut at the top of the global box office thanks largely to big debuts from the UK and China.

A debut weekend of $247 million globally is on par with the rest of the series and the film should end the series on a strong note, despite lacklustre reviews.

Ending its run at the top after 4 weeks is Spectre which this week adds $80.3 million to its global gross.

A runaway hit for the Bond franchise Spectre has now taken $677.8 million globally, this is on par with Skyfall but that film had good legs unlike Spectre which seems to be tailoring off, $1 billion could be tough.

Spectre is also the highest grossing total gross on the chart this week.

The Night Before is also new on the global stage making its debut at number 6 with $10.1 million.

Here is the full global box office:

  1. Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 - $247,025,000
