The UK box office came to a grinding halt in January of 2021 as the global pandemic took full grip of the country so there was no chart until the middle of May.

Once cinemas opened it was a slow start Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway coming out on top for the first few weeks, it wasn't until late June when Fast & Furious 9 was released that things started to hot up, then things started to go from strength to strength.

Here is a breakdown of the top 5 movie of 2021 at the UK box office.

No Time To Die

The much delayed 25th movie in the Bond series finally got released at the very end of September 2021 and after a massive debut weekend where it took nearly £26 Million the movie managed to do what Tenet the previous year couldn't, it got people mack in cinemas.

The movie, which is still on general release got mixed reviews from critics, and has an ending with split Bond fans, but to date the movie has taken £96.4 Million over 12 weeks of release and is the third highest grossing movie of all time in the UK.

Spider Man: No Way Home

The last movie from the MCU universe to be released in a year when Marvel/Disney/Sony had a fantastic return to cinemas, and after all the hype and rumours about what the multiverse would bring the movie took a massive &pond;31.9 Million on its debut in the UK.

The film was released in mid December so it still raking in the cash as your local multiplex, and will most likely overtake No Time To Die with its total gross as well as be only the third movie in history to gross over £100 Million.

With a total gross already over £50 Million after just 2 weeks it will most likely feature quite high on the top movies of 2022 as well.

Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

Another MCU movie on the list of top movies if 2021 as the much anticipated new superhero hit cinemas in early September with a debut gross of £5.7 Million.

Over a 9 week run at the box office the movie took £21.8 Million making it the third top movie of the year

Visionary director Denis Villeneuve is fast becoming one of the most respected film makers in Hollywood and his much anticipated version of the classic sci-fi noval Dune hit cinemas in October with £5.8 Million.

Check back on Monday to see what new movies made it onto the Weekend Box Office Chart.

Next week there is 1 new movie

Marvel's Eternals spends a second weekend on top of the UK box office in a week where there are no new releases making an impact on the box office with the biggest mover being the Princess Diana film Spencer which jumps up to the top 5 on its second week.

Top new movie of the weekend is Mothering Sunday directed by Eva Husson and featuring Olivia Coleman and Colin Firth among its cast, it enters at number 1 with £156,940 while the Clint Eastwood western Cry Macho makes its UK debut at 15 with £72,130.

UK box office QuickView

  • Number 1 - Eternals (2nd Weekend)
  • Highest debut - Mothering Sunday (@11)
  • Longest run - No Time To Die (7 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - No Time To Die (£92.7 Million)

UK box office top 5 breakdown weekend 12th - 14th November 2021

Eternals

Staying at the top of the UK box office for a second weekend the Marvel Studios movie takes £2.9 Million, a reasonable 47% drop over last weekend.

This drop is better than Marvels other 2021 movie Black Widow which dropped a massive 74% on its second weekend, but it was on Disney+ as well, but worse than Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings which only dropped 38%, but there was pent up cinema demand at the time.

The movie has taken £10.5 Million over its 2 weeks of release which is actually comparable to the other 2021 Marvel movies, but with the hype for Spider-Man: No Way Home going beyond fever pitch that movies mid December release could effect the final few weeks box office for this Chloe Zhao directed movie.

Still for a movie which has fairly unfavourable review it will end up with a £20 Million+ total UK gross which is not bad for a new IP.

No Time To Die

Daniel Craigs final Bond outing stays put at number 2 this weekend with a gross of £1.5 Million, a very slim 21% on its 7th weekend of release, which could be down to people finally deciding its safe to go back to cinemas and not wanting to miss the big screen experience.

The movie has taken a massive £92.7 Million in the UK and it will end up as the top movie of 2021, I don't think even Spider-Man: No Way Home can beat this, and with the movie coming out so late in the year much of its take will be in 2022.

The movie is still the 5th top movie of all time in the UK, but it should be able to take Avatar by next weekend and settle under Spectre and Skyfall on the top 5 UK movies of all time, it will most likely struggle to get over £100 Million in the UK though.

Dune

Remaining at number 3 this weekend is director Denis Villeneuve take on the classic schi-fi noval which takes £1.7 Million over the weekend, again a very slim drop of only 24%.

This gives the movie a total UK gross of £18.9 Million and the 4th top movie of 2021 as it prepares to overtake Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway at number 3.

The movie is now the top grossing movie in the UK for the celebrated director having just overtaken the UK gross of 2017's Blade Runner 2049.

Spencer

The bio-pic of Princess Diana goes on wider release and climbs to number 4 on the box office with £698,065, a 29% increase over last weekend where it debuted at number 6.

The movie starring Kristen Stewart as the late Princess has taken £1.5 Million in the UK after 2 weeks.

The Boss Baby 2: Family Business

Staying put at number 5 this weekend is the animated sequel which takes £574,218 on its 4th weekend, a very small 5% drop, giving the movie a total in the UK of £6.4 Million.

Anticipation was high for the much delayed 25th Bond movie, and the opening weekend gross didn't disappoint and it took most of this weekends box office and produced the highest weekend take since Avengers: Endgame in 2019.

There was one other new release on the UK box office this weekend, Indian threequel movie Chal Mera Putt 3 made its debut at number 6 with £192,957.

UK box office QuickView

  • Number 1 - No Time To Die (1st weekend)
  • Highest debut - No Time To Die (@1)
  • Longest run - The Croods: A New Age and Space Jam: A New Legacy (10 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - No Time To Die (£25.9 Million)

UK box office top 5 weekend breakdown 1st - 3rd October 2021

No Time To Die

It was always going to be a big first weekend for the much delayed 25th James Bond movie, and the last starring Daniel Craig, but there is a suggestion that it actually beat expectation as the movie makes its UK debut with £25.9 Million.

This 3 day (Friday - Sunday) gross is bigger than both Skyfall and SPECTRE (although SPECTRE officially had a 7 day opening of over £40 Million).

The movie has instantly become the top movie of 2021 in the UK beating the £20 Million of Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway.

It's also worth noting that the success and pent up anticipation for this movie effected the rest of the box office quite negatively as the movie took 91% of all money spent at the box office this weekend, meaning that (less than) 1 in every 10 tickets sold was NOT for this movie.

This will certainly get people back in the habbit of going to the cinema again and unlike when Warner release Tenet this time last year, people are ready to go back to cinemas now.

Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

After 4 weeks at the top it is perhaps time for the Marvel superhero to give up the top spot, and as the top movie and this are attracting a similar audience this has suffered quite a bit as the movie take £779,077, a drop of 50% over last weekend.

This gives the movie a 5 week total of £19.6 Million and its the 3rd top movie of 2021 in the UK.

Free Guy

The Ryan Reynolds starring smash hit comedy action movie sits tight at number 3 this weekend with £270,266, a 51% drop, and its largest since relese.

This gives the movie a total gross of £16.5 Million after 8 weeks of release and its the 5th top movie of 2021.

The PAW Patrol: Movie

The kids favourite dogs climb back up the box office from number 7 to number 4 this weekend with a gross of £251,511, an incredible 15% increase over last weekend.

The movie has now taken £8.1 Million over 8 weeks of release.

The Many Saints of Newark

Falling hard this weekend is the prequel movie to The Sopranos which takes £237,150 on its second weekend, a massive 75% drop over last weekend, this gives the movie a total UK gross of £1.5 Million.
