News from around the web

Following in the footsteps of Venom and its sequel Sony release their latest movie in the Marvel Spiderverse with Morbius which tops the box office on its debut.

With a new comic book inspired movie there was nothing else of note released, The Contractor~2022 starring Chris Pine was another movie making its debut, at number 12 with $535,000.

US box office QuickView

  • Number 1 - Morbius (1st weekend)
  • Highest debut - Morbius (@1)
  • Longest run - Spider-Man: No Way Home (16 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - Spider-Man: No Way Home ($802.7 Million)

US box office top 5 weekend breakdown 1st - 3rd April 2022

Morbius

Another new comic book character comes to the big screen in an origins story, this time its the less known about Morbius from the Spider-Man comic books which is owned by Sony Pictures.

With the Venom movies being a sizeable hit for the studio this must have seemed like a good prospect to increase the universe, but a critical panning and mad word of mouth could see this stall at a single film.

The movie takes a reasonable $39.1 Million on its debut, but with Sonic the Hedgehog 2 out next weekend, and getting better reviews, the movie could sink fast.

It is the 10th top movie of 2022 after a single weekend of release.

The Lost City~2022

After a single weekend at the top of the US box office the action comedy starring Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum falls to number 2 with a weekend gross of $14.8 Million, a 51% drop.

This gives the movie a total North American gross of $54.8 Million after 2 weekends of release, its the 8th top movie of 2022.

The Batman

Still hanging onto a spot on the top 3 the Robert Pattinson Caped Crusader movie falls to number 3 this weekend with $10.8 Million, a 47% drop.

The movie has been on the chart now for 5 weeks and has taken a total of $349 Million, it is the top movie of 2022.

Uncharted

The Ruben Fleischer directed video game adaptation remains at number 4 this weekend with a gross of $3.6 Million, a small 28% drop over last weekend, giving the movie a total gross of $138.9 Million and the 3rd top movie of 2022.

Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie

Remaining at number 5 for a second weekend is the Japanese animated movie which takes $1.9 million on its 3rd weekend of release, a 57% drop.

The movie has now taken $29.6 Million in North America and is the 11th top movie of 2022!

It's all change again at the top of the US box office as 2 new entries are in the top 2 position, highest of the two is the new movie from director M. Night Shyamalan Old which hits the top.

The second of the two top releases is the new G.I. Joe movie Snake Eyes which come in at number 2.

US box office QuickView

  • Number 1 - Old (1st Weekend)
  • Highest debut - Old (@1)
  • Longest run - A Quiet Place Part II (9 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - A Quiet Place Part II ($157.5 Million)

US box office top 5 breakdown weekend 23rd - 25th July 2021

Old

The new movie from director M. Night Shyamalan makes its debut at the top of the US box office this weekend with a gross of $16.5 Million.

The famed directors top movie in America is still The Sixth Sense from 1999 and with the current pandemic and cinema closures it wont come anywhere near that, but his lowest grossing is The Lady In the Water at $42.2 Million and although a struggle it could come close to that!

Snake Eyes

The new movie from the G.I Joe series of movies is an origins film and comes in at number 2 with $13.3 Million.

This movie had a lot of hype and its perhaps a disappointment that it came in at number 2, but Old had good word of mouth and this movie got hit hard by the critics, and I dont think there was much of an appetite for it!

Black Widow

Falling to number 3 this weekend is the latest Marvel movie which this week takes $11.6 Million, 56% down from last weekend.

This gives the movie a 3 week total gross of $154.8 Million, and its the 3rd top grossing movie of 2021 in America but its maybe lower than expected, it has the pandemic to content with and it is also available on Disney+ with an extra fee, and it wont be long before its available without the extra fee, also Marvel are doing very well on Disney+ with WandaVision, The Falcom and The Winter Soldier and Loki all having been big hits.

Space Jam: A New Legacy

Falling to number 4 from the top this week is the Space Jam sequel which has a second weekend gross of $9.5 Million, a large 70% drop over last weekend.

This gives the movie a total US gross of $51.3 Million and the prospect of disappearing out of the box office in the next couple of weeks, on a positive note it is the 8th top movie in America in 2021 so far.

Fast & Furious 9

The lastest The Fast Sage movie is sinking fast at the box office and this week takes $4.7 Million, 38% down from last weekend.

This gives the car movie a $163.3 Million total over 5 weeks of release, it is the top grossing movie in America of 2021 so far taking over from A Quiet Place Part II this weekend but this is most likely the last weekend in the top 5.

Being held in Anaheim California August 23rd - 25th the Ultimate Disney Fan Event is held by the company on a bi-annual basis and gives the fans news on the latest movies, TV shows and theme parks.

What can we expect for this years event? With a new Star Wars movie around the corner, the end of the phase 3 Marvel Cinematic Universe, a new Frozen movie on the horizons and an area of the Disney theme parks dedicated to Star Wars!

Lucasfilm (Star Wars)

There may not be a new trailer coming out of the D23 expo for Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker but we can expect a behind the scenes reel, as we did with the last 2 films, with new footage and most likely, and just maybe we'll get an official movie poster.

There may also be some news on the new trilogy of films that are set for release every other year from December 2023.

There has been a feeling that we have had too much Star Wars in recent years so after this years movie expect the whole franchise to go quiet until the promotion starts for he 2023 movie.

Disney are releasing their own streaming service this year, Disney+, and the Star Wars Universe ig going to feed into this a lot over the years between The Rise Of Skywalker and the next cinematic adventure including the much anticipated The Mandalorian for which there will likely be a trailer.

Lets not also forget that other Lucasfilms franchise, Indianan Jones. The next movie has already been delayed but is going ahead with Harrison Ford, little is known but with a whole area dedicated to the film studio there could well be some mention of the original tomb raider.

Marvel Cinematic Universe

The MCU phase 3 went out with a massive bang and Avengers: Engame became the top grossing movie of all time and Spider-Man: Far from home grossed over a Billion at the box office, so the phase 4 has a lot to live up to.

The first spanner in the works is the breakdown of the Disney and Sony (who own Spider-Man) partnership so don't expect to hear anything from the Spidey franchise, but with the acquisition of Fox by Disney every other Marvel character can now be used by Disney so expect to see the likes of X-Men and Fantastic 4 cropping up, not that we'll hear anything at D23.

There should be more news on the confirmed project like Shang-Chi, Black Widow and Thor: Love And Thunder, maybe there will even be a trailer for the Scarlett Johansson starring movie which is the first of these movie out the door next March.

Again the Disney+ streaming service, due for launch this year, will be a major part of the MCU going forward with the prospect of TV series adding to the Universe as well as movies.

Avatar

One of the properties that Disney aquired when it bought Fox was James Camerons former highest grossing movie Avatar and all planed sequels.

They have been a long time coming but with the opening of the Pandora area (the planet in the movie) in Animal Kingdom in Orlando Disney are keen to get the sequels made and have announced they will be released bi-yearly fron 2022.

There will be an Avatar area as the expo and the possibility of more information of the sequels which are being made back to back.

Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar

Lets not forget the animated Disney Movies! On the horizon is Frozen II, which is kind of a big deal, the original film is still the true highest grossing animated movie of all time (not counting the new The Lion King movie) and became a cultural phenomenon back in 2013.

The trailers have promised much and we could see more footage from the film which is set for release at the end of 2019.

It has been announced that there will be a Moana area coming to Epcot in the revamp of the Walt Disney World park, this could be a sign that there is a sequel to the 2016 animated movie.

Pixar will also be showing off its future movies Onwards and Soul at a presentation during the weekend.

Little has beed seen from these movies from the digital animated arm of the company except for a trailer for Onwards, so fans are excited to see more and this is the perfect platform.

There is of course much more that will come out of the Expo so come back regularly to get all the latest news.

Following the path laid down by its US box office release, Straight Outta Compton this week climbs to the top of the UK box office on its debut.

A low week overall for the box office grosses and Straight Outta Compton's weekend take is £2.4 million, although it is higher than last weeks top film.

Last weeks top film was Paper Town which this week takes a big shove down the box office and ends up at number 8.

A £452,953 second weekend gross brings the film total gross to date to £3.4 with the prospect of a very short 3 week run.

Worth noting is the run of Inside Out~2015 which once again is at 2 and like last week would have been the top movie it it was Monday to Friday.

Also new this week is Hitman Agent 47 at number 3 and 45 Years which is new at number 10, Zak Efrons We Are Your Friends is considered a flop with a number 13 entry.
