Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

The UK cinema scene is starting to show signs of a total recovery and the Marvel superhero movie has to date shown that people are going back into the cinema.

This weeks the movie takes £1.5 Million at the box office which is a 34% drop over last week, this gives the movie a total UK gross of £18.2 Million.

This puts the movie at number 3 on the top movies of 2021 and will soon overtake Black Widow and Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway to potentially be the top movie of the year, although with the release of No Time To Die this weekend it may not get there!

The Many Saints of Newark

Released as a prequel to the TV show The Sopranos the movie stars Michael Gandolfini as Tony Soprano, the role originally played by his late father James Gandolfini.

The movie is the top new film of the week at number 2 taking £945,319 on its debut weekend.

Free Guy

Falling to number 3 this weekend is the smash hit movie which spends its 7th weekend on the box office taking £551,195, a very slim 17% drop.

The film has now taken £16.1 Million at the UK box office and is the 5th top movie of 2021.

Oasis Knebworth 1996

Directed by Jake Scott this documentary about the superband Oasis playing the legendary Knebworth in 1996 at the height of their fame is the top documentary at the box office in 2021.

The film takes £344,832 on its special showing in selected cinemas over the weekend.

Respect

The movie based on the life of Aretha Franklin drop to number 5 this weekend with £250,050 on its 3rd week, a 34 % drop over last weekend which gives the movie a total UK gross of £1.7 Million.

This weekend the US box office showed the first definite signs of recovery as the sequel movie A Quiet Place Part II opens to the biggest weekend of the pandemic.

Also opening big this weekend is Cruella which makes its debut in the runner up spot and worth of a mention is Raya and the Last Dragon which despite being 14 weeks old increases its weekend gross and goes over the $50 Million mark.

US box office top 5 breakdown 28th - 30th May 2021

A Quiet Place Part II

Sequel to the 2018 movie A Quiet Place director John Krasinski takes us on another journey in the post apoplectic where a slightest sound can cost you your life.

The movie takes an amazing $48.3 Million on its debut weekend which is only 5% lower that the fist movie, and as cinemas are still not 100% open across the country you can see why the studio wanted to delay the movie.

Excellent word of mouth will take this movie through the summer and it has already become not only the summer blockbuster to see this year but a horror classic.

Cruella

Disney release the Cruella De'vil origin movie on Disney+ premium as well as at theatres wich may have damaged its box office potential slightly.

Still the Emma Stone starring movie wakes a excellent $21.3 Million on its debut and enters the box office at number 2.

Spiral: From the Book of Saw

Spending 2 weeks at the top of the US box office the Saw sequel movie falls to number 3 this weekend.

A $2.2 Million gross is a 50% drop from last weekend and puts the movies total gross at $19.7 Million after 3 weeks of release.

Wrath of Man

The Jason Statham starring action movie falls to number 4 this weekend with $2.1 Million, a 28% drop, for a total gross of $22.1 Million after 4 weeks of release.

Raya and the Last Dragon

Spending yet another weekend in the top 5 the Disney animated tale is still taking nearly $2 Million a week at the box office, this is a 17% increase from last weekend.

The movie has now passed the $50 Million mark with a total gross of $50.8 Million after 14 weeks of release.

Sequel movie Spiral: From the Book of Saw occupies the top spot on the US box office for a second weekend despite an almost 50% drop from last weekend while Dream Horse is the top new movie at 9 with $844,279.

Although Dream Horse was the highest new movie of the week a release release of 2020's animated Scoob! was the highest movie to appear that wasn't on last weeks chart as it had a re-entry at number 8 with $850,000.

The box office is really on the road to recovery now and but with studios waiting for the summer season to kick off properly the top 5 movie are almost static with Disney's Raya and the Last Dragon the shining movie on its 13th weekend of release.

  • Highest debut - Dream Horse (@9)

US box office top 5 breakdown weekend 21st - 23rd May 2021

After making its debut at the top of the US box office last weekend the Saw sequel movie starring Chris Rock remains there for a second weekend with $4.55 Millon, a 55% drop.

This brings the horror movies total US gross to $15.8 Million after 10 days of release.

Those Who Wish Me Dead

The Angelina Jolie starring movie remains at number 3 this weekend with a gross of $1.8 Million, a 35% drop from last weekend taking its total gross to $5.5 Million after 2 weeks of release.

Raya and the Last Dragon

Now on its 13th weekend of release the Disney animated fantasy jumps back up the box office to number 4 with a gross of $1.6 Million, a very slim 2% drop from last weekend.

The movie has now taken an excellent $48 Million over its box office run and is sure to hit $50 Million by next weekend.

Godzilla Vs. Kong

Another movie going back up the box office is the monster battle which this week takes $1.4 Million, a slim 6% drop from last weekend giving the movie a total gross of $96 Million over 8 weeks and looking the $100 Million milestone in the face.

The first real sign of a box office recovery in North America was evident on Wednesday March 21st as the Warner Bros. movie Godzilla Vs. Kong had a massive $9.6 Million debut.

This is by far the biggest opening for a movie over the last year during the lockdowns of the COVID-19 pandemic beating Tenet and Wonder Woman 1984.

Consider that, as with all Warner Bros. movies in 2021, the movie is also available in the US on the HBO Max streaming platform, meaning that people are hungry for movie in a theatre, and not many have the streaming service.

Movie theatres in two of the biggest US areas, New Your and Los Angeles, have re-opened to limited capacity over the last couple of weeks which will have helped boost the total for the movie.

The movie also had a massive opening this weekend in China where it grossed $69.2 Million topping the box office in that terretory and making it the top grossing movie of the week globally.

With cinemas set to open in the UK on May 17th after a nearly 5 month closure things are looking promising for the industry that has struggled over the last year.

Raya and the Last Dragon continues to show its dominence on the box office as its stays at the top for another weekend while Benedict Cumberbatch is the star of The Courier which enters the chart at number 3.

With cinemas in North America starting to re-open, including two of the biggest markets New York and Los Angeles, the box office is starting to show signs of the recovery with most movies showing very little drop or significant increases with their week on week gross.

US box office Quickview

  • Number 1 - Raya and the Last Dragon (3rd weekend)
  • Highest debut - The Courier (@3)
  • Longest run - The Croods: A New Age (17 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - The Croods: A New Age ($55.24 Million)

Here is the top 5 North American box office breakdown 19th - 21st March 2021

Raya and the Last Dragon

Disney rule the box office for a third weekend with their latest animated feature which takes $5.15 Million this weekend, only a 10% drop from last weekend.

North America is stating to see an increase in the number of cinemas open and the hold is no real surprise.

The movie, which is also available on Disney+ Premium Access, has now taken $23.43 Million in total at the box office.

Tom & Jerry: The Movie

The surprise hit the season remains at number 2 this weekend with $3.8 Million, a 7% drop from last weekend.

Kids movies on the hole have done very well during the global pandemic and this week the cat and mouse live action movie has taken $33.7 Million in total grosses over 4 weeks.

The Courier

Benedict Cumberbatch stars in the highest new movie of the weekend at number 3 taking a debut gross of $2.12 Million.

Chaos Walking

The Doug Liman directed movie starring Tom Holland falls to number 4 this weekend with a gross of $1.92 Million, a 14% drop from last weekend.

Considering the bad reviews the movie got it has done surprisingly well and after 3 weeks of release it has grossed $9.69 Million.

The Croods: A New Age

Finally on the top 5 is the longest running movie of the chart which takes $620,000 over the weekend, which is incredibly a 13% increase on last weeks gross!

The movie has done amazingly well and after 17 weeks of release, all inside the top 5, it has taken $55.24 Million.
