US weekend box office top 5 breakdown 16th - 18th December 2022

Highest new movie this weekend

Its been a long road to the sequel of the highest grossing movie of all time but this weekend director James Cameron finally delivers his 3 hour movie and it, as expected, hits the ground running.

The movie takes $134 Million on its debut weekend, it takes 88% of the total top 15 this weekend and it the 6th highest grossing movie in the month of December in America.

Compared to the original Avatar this movie is considerably higher than the 2009 opening weekend of $77 Million, even when adjusted for inflation.

Avatar was a slow burner at the box office, and this sequel is getting positive word of mouth, so the road ahead into 2023 looks good.

The David Harbour directed movie which is Santa Claud crossed with Home Alone with violent results remains at number 2 this weekend with a gross of $5 Million, a 36% drop over last weekend.

THis gives the movie a total US gross of $34.9 Million over 3 weeks of release, which comparing to Krampus from 2015, that movie had taken $35.1 Million 3 weeks into its run.

Dropping to number 3 this weekend after 5 weeks at the top is the sequel movie to the 2018 film Black Panther which takes $5.4 Million, a 52% over last weekend.

This gives the movie a total US gross of $418.9 Million after 6 weeks of release, lower than the first movie but still a good gross for 2022.

The movie is now the second highest grossing movie of the year behind Top Gun Maverick, how long it will star there with Avatar: The Way of Water coming up the charts fast remains to be seen.

Despite Disney pulling their latest animated feature from cinemas far earlier than expected the movie only drops to number 4 this weekend with $2.2 Million, a 42% drop over last weekend.

THe movie has now taken $33.7 Million after 4 weeks of release, considerably lower than the 2021 Encanto which was at $81.4 Million 4 weeks into its run.

Dropping to 5 on its 5th weekend is the Ralph Finnes fine dining movie which takes $1.7 Million over the weekend, a 39% drop over last week.

The movie has taken a reasonable $32.1 Million in total over its 5 weeks of release.

The UK box office didn't get started in 2021 until 24th May so the summer season is the first season of the year to get any results from ticket sales after the last box office chart being 25th December 2020 and Wonder Woman 1984 topping that chart.

Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway

The top movie of the summer got off to a flying start which was Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway and it took £4 Million the weekend cinemas re-opened.

The sequel movie directed by Will Gluck and starring James Corden as Peter was the top movie in the country for the first weekend audiences were allowed back into cinemas and it hung around for 12 weeks and has to date taken over £20 Million.

Black Widow

The much delayed Black Widow finally got a release on 23rd July 2021 and topped the box office for 3 weeks.

The movie starring Scarlett Johansson and Florence Pugh was on the UK top 15 for 15 weekend and has to date grossed over £18 Million and is the second top movie of 2021.

Fast & Furious 9

The Fast Saga was back this year with Fast & Furious 9 which was released at the end of June and topped the box office for a couple of weeks.

The movie has taken over £16 Million in the UK and is the third top movie of summer 2021.

The Suicide Squad

There was a lot of hype around the James Gunn adaptation of The Suicide Squad which was released in late July and topped the box office on its release and the following weekend.

A 6 week UK box office run saw it gross £13 Million and is the fourth top in the UK over the summer of 2021.

Free Guy

A bit of a sleeper hit was the fifth top movie of the summer as Ryan Reynolds Free Guy which topped the box office in mid August for 3 weeks and has taken over £13 Million so far.

The movie is still on the box office as we go into the autumn and only got knocked off the top of the UK box office this last weekend by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

Director Patty Jenkins has moved the release date of Wonder Woman 1984 to August 14th 2020 because the best way to see the film is on the big screen.

Movie theatres across the world are currently closed because the the COVID-19 pandemic which means that many of the smaller establishments are suffering though no income.

In a heart felt tweet she reiterates how important movie theatres are and the move of release date is so it can help the movie theatre industry once the pandemic os over.

Many of the released for MArch and April have been put on hold or to a later date including A Quiet Place Part II, No Time To Die, Black Widow and Mulan to name a few.

There is no time line of when the social restrictions set by global governments will be lifted and when cinemas will be able to open again.

As a result of this the weekend box office results have also been suspended.

In the ever increasing list of films being delayed because of the global coronavirus pandemic Fast & Furious 9 is delayed until April 2nd 2021.

The list of film getting delayed is increasing with No Time To Die, Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaways and just today The Quiet Place Part II all getting put back.

The viral outbreak is making a difference to the box office as evidence by last weekends results and with no end in sight you can't blame the studios.

Getting put back to 2021 is a strange move but Easter/Spring is clearly the best time of year for this Billion dollar franchise.

Sony release their long awaited sequel movie Bad Boys For Life but it can only make its debut at number 2 as war movie 1917 holds onto the top spot with an excellent second weekend gross.

1917

The re-teaming of Will Smith and Martin Lawrence after 17 years gives the movie a number 2 entry this week with £3.7 Million.

Normally this would have been a number 1 entry except for the fantastic weekend gross of 1917, but with good reviews and great results across the rest of the world the story isn't over yet.

Little Women
