Despite there being 7 new releases hitting the top 15 films this week the top five films in the UK remain unchanged from last week with Suicide Squad remaining at the top.

On its second weekend of release the DC comics anti-hero picture took £4.2 million, down just over 66% from the previous weekend.

The film has now taken £22 million during its 10 days of release and is not that far behind stable mate Batman V Superman Dawn of Justice.

With the rest of the top 4 remaining fairly static the highest new film of the week is Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates starring Zak Efron and Anna Kendrick.

The comedy film took just over a million pound on its debut weekend in the UK, but the suspicion is it will fall fast in the coming weeks ready for a home video release.

Big suprise of the week is the Disney remake of Petes Dragon landing at number 6 with £844,090, one of the Mouse Houses smallest hits in a while.

Other new films this week are Newrve at number 7, The Shallows at number 8, Mohenjo Daro at number 11, Rustom at number 12 and finally Wiener Dog at number 14.

Longest running film this week and highest total gross is The Secret Life of Pets, 8 weeks on the chart and £33 million.

Historical Charts

A year ago - Pixels made its debut at the top of the box office smashing Fantastic Four down to number 6 after a single week at the top.

Five years ago - Rise of The Planet of The Apes took over the top spot on its debut knocking off Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 2 which fell to number 3.

Ten years ago - Cars remained at the top of the box office for a third week while highest new entry was Monster House right down at number 4.

Fifteen years ago - Cats and Dogs remained at the top of the box office for another week with The Parole Officer entering highest at number 5.

Twenty years ago - Independence Day was the top new film of the week making its debut at the top with Twister falling to number 2 on its third week of release.

As expected this week there was no stopping Dawn of the Planet of the Apes as it very easily and without competition took to the top of the charts on it;s debut weekend.

Grossing £8.7 million from Thursday to Sunday it took more than the rest of the box office combined.

Dawn well and truly out preformed it predecessor Rise of the planet of the Apes which took £5.8 million on it's debut weekend in August 2011, it went on to gross £20.5 in total.

Dawn should go on to out-gross that film and could come close to £25 - 30 million in the UK.

Also worth a mention this weekend is two even movies that got themselves inside the top 5 on the box office chart, Monty Python Live (Mostly) made number 4 with £1.8 million which Andre Rieu took him Maastricht concert to number 5 with £830,000.

This time last year Monsters University held on to the top spot which mean The Worlds End debuted at 2.

Five years ago Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince made it's debut at the top of the box office knocking the previous number 1, Ice Age: Dawn of The Dinosaurs, to number 2.

Ten years ago say Spider-Man 2 make it's cinematic debut at the top of the box office knocking Shrek 2 into the number 2 spot.

Fifteen years ago was an historical time in cinema as the much anticipated, and to an extent much hated, Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace made it's UK debut at the top, 2 months after it's US debut. The Mummy fell to number 2.

There was do doubt this week that Dawn of the Planet of the Apes would be the top film in America, and it does so with ease over the rest of the box office.

A very good $73 million dollars assured that the new apes film would be big and it not only far out grossed the rest of the box office but out grossed it predecessor.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes $55 million on it's American opening, it was a (nearly) new franchise so that may have effected it, Dawn has had very positive reviews and Rise was considered a big hit in the end.

Falling into the runner up spot this week is Transformers: Age of Extinction, two weeks at the top has earned it over $200 million in the US.

At the UK box office this week the very British The Inbetweeners movie continues is run at the top of the box office chart making it 3 weeks in a row.

Another good weekend for the boys adding £ 3,679,555 to its total gross, the film has done far better than expected to date and now sits with a UK gross at £34,992,321 making it the 3rd highest grossing film of the year in the UK.

In the rest of the chart, Rise of the Planet of the apes reverses it's decline of the chart and pops back to number 2 with £ 1,083,091.

Last week's highest entry slips just one place this week, One Day falls to 3 with a total weekend take of £ 1,048,343.

The Little blue men of The Smurfs continue their successful run staying at 4 with a take of £ 1,043,353.

Finally in the top five is the highest new film of the week, an Indian action film Bodyguard which takes just under the million mark at £ 839,695.

This week's top 15 is running higher than last year's where The Last Exorcism was a new entry at the top of the tree, and the only film to take over a million, and Avatar was still proving a popular hit 9 months after release.
