News from around the web

The UK box office came to a grinding halt in January of 2021 as the global pandemic took full grip of the country so there was no chart until the middle of May.

Once cinemas opened it was a slow start Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway coming out on top for the first few weeks, it wasn't until late June when Fast & Furious 9 was released that things started to hot up, then things started to go from strength to strength.

The movie, which is still on general release got mixed reviews from critics, and has an ending with split Bond fans, but to date the movie has taken £96.4 Million over 12 weeks of release and is the third highest grossing movie of all time in the UK.

Spider Man: No Way Home

The last movie from the MCU universe to be released in a year when Marvel/Disney/Sony had a fantastic return to cinemas, and after all the hype and rumours about what the multiverse would bring the movie took a massive &pond;31.9 Million on its debut in the UK.

The film was released in mid December so it still raking in the cash as your local multiplex, and will most likely overtake No Time To Die with its total gross as well as be only the third movie in history to gross over £100 Million.

With a total gross already over £50 Million after just 2 weeks it will most likely feature quite high on the top movies of 2022 as well.

Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

Another MCU movie on the list of top movies if 2021 as the much anticipated new superhero hit cinemas in early September with a debut gross of £5.7 Million.

Over a 9 week run at the box office the movie took £21.8 Million making it the third top movie of the year

Dune

Visionary director Denis Villeneuve is fast becoming one of the most respected film makers in Hollywood and his much anticipated version of the classic sci-fi noval Dune hit cinemas in October with £5.8 Million.

The movie took £21.8 Million over 9 weeks of release in the UK in 2021 to make it the 4th to movie of the year.

Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway

THe first big hit of the year once cinemas in the UK started to re-open, its a sequel to 2018 movie Peter Rabbit which was a huge hit so this was a sure fire hit.

The movie made the top of the box office on its release and was the top movie of the year for quite a long run, the film took £20.4 Million over a 17 week run and is the 5th top movie of 2021.

UK weekend box office top 5 breakdown 17th - 19th December 2021

Spider Man: No Way Home

The anticipation for the next movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been sky high over the last few months, especially as rumours began to circulate that there would be appearances from 2 previous generations of Spider-Man in Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire.

The movie hit UK movie theatres on Thursday, and in the face of the pandemic the movie packed cinemas up and down the country in a way not seen in a few years.

The film took an eye watering £31.8 Million over its opening frame, a figure which is even higher than 2021's other much anticipated return No Time To Die which took £25.9 Million.

The movie is now the third top opener behind Avengers: Endgame from 2019 and Star Wars: The Force Awakens from 2015.

The movie also instantly became the second top grossing movie of 2021 in the UK, it won't quite beat the 25th Bond movie as t he top movie of 2021 but ultimately it probably will beat its total gross and has a chance to become only the third movie in history to break the £100 Million mark at the UK box office.

To top things off it also took a lion share of the money spent at the box office this weekend with a massive 91%.

Clifford the Big Red Dog

The movie about the Big Red Dog called Clifford held up fairly well in its second weekend and remained at number 2 with £766,122, a 41% drop.

This gives the movie a total gross of £2.3 Million after 2 weekends of release.

West Side Story

Legendary director Steven Spielberg's remake movie drops from the top to number 3 this weekend with £587,305, a 55% drop over last weekend, giving the movie a total gross of £2.9 Million after 2 weeks.

The movie is doing better midweek and if the box office chart was counted Monday to Sunday rather than Friday to Sunday it would have been second with £1,6 Million, probably a testament to its demographic.

Encanto

Disneys latest movie remains at number 4 this weekend with £360,891, a 43% drop over last weekend, giving the movie a £4.7 Million total after 4 weeks on release.

House of Gucci

Falling to number 5 this week is the Ridley Scott directed movie which takes £289,040 over the weekend, a large 63% drop on its 4th weekend of release, giving the movie a total UK gross of £8 Million.

The long awaited arrival of the new Spider-Man movie this weekend left the global box office with a new number 1 movie and with the sequel to Sheep Without a Shephard released in China there was also a big new number 2 movie.

Also making an impact on the global box office with an early release in a handful of countries is the sequel movie The Matrix Resurrections which is new at 4.

Climbing up to number 5 this weekend after going wide in China, the only country it is release, with a weekend gross of $7.4 Million, a 65% jump, for a total global gross of $101.6 Million.

After the cast of the new Spider-Man movie had a bit of fun with the title yesterday (February 23rd) today its been revealed the title will be Spider-Man: No Way Home.

The titles that were teased by the stars were Spider-man: Home Slice, Spider-Man: Phone Home and Spider-Man: Home Wrecker, as you can see 'Home' was clearly going to feature.

Now today Sony have released a video which gives the proper title a reveal and lets agree its better than the teased ones!

Its also worth remembering that "Home" has featured in all the Disney MCU Spider-Man movies, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home and now Spider-Man: No Way Home.

The current rumours suggest that the movie will be set in the multiverse that WanderVision on Disney+ is currently teasing and the new Doctor Strange movie will feature, and as Benedict Cumberbatch's Strange will be in the movie is a fair guess.

There is also big rumours, although denied by Tom Holland, that previous Spider-Man actors Toby Maquire and Andrew Garfield could be in the movie as two previous generation villains feature in the shape of Electro and Doctor Octopus as played by Jamie Foxx and Alfred Molina.

The movie is currently wrapping filming with Jon Watts directing and alongside Holland as Spider-Man is the returning Zendaya and Jacob Batalon.

The movie is set for a December 17th 2021 release and a trailer and official poster is sure to follow soon.

The big screen adaptation of Wicked has been on the cards for a while now, but hit a block when director Stephen Daldry stepped down, now Crazy Rich Asians director Jon M. Chu has stepped in.

The American director has just completed the movie In The Heights, a musical which will hit cinemas, hopefully, later in 2021 after release delays.

The sequel to Crazy Rich Asians, China Rich Girlfriend might also be on his schedule which will be film back to back with the third film Rich People Problems although rumours suggest Chu won't direct.

The film version of the hit musical about the witches of Oz has been in the works for a while, it should have hit cinemas in December of 2019, the same time as another musical adaptation hit, Cats!

No release date or cast has been given yet, and with COVID still a global issue it could be a couple of years before we see it, IMDB are showing a 22nd December 2021 which seems a but tight, maybe 2022 seems more likely?
