The last in the trilogy of Planet of The Apes prequel movies opens at the top of the Uk box office this week knocking Spider-Man Homecoming off after just a single week.

War For The Planet of The Apes which stars Woody Harrelson and Any Serkis hits the top with a weekend gross of £7.1 million, a very good gross for a critically praised film.

The trilogy of films has been constant on its debut and this does better than Rise but not quite at good as Dawn's £8 million debut.

With this in mind I'd expect this to end its run in the £30 million region.

Spider-Man Homecoming falls to number 3 this week leapfrogging over Despicable Me 3 by the tightest of margins with a £3.7 million weekend.

This brings the films total gross to £16 million after 10 days of release and is looking set to match the first Spider-Man film from 2002.

Despicable Me at number 2 took £3.8 million and has now grossed £26 million from 3 weekends of release.

For the Monday - Sunday week the top film would have been Spider-Man with a £7.4 million weekly gross with Apes second and Despicable Me 3 third.

For the third weekend running The Boss Baby is the longest running film with 15 weeks and the highest grossing with £28 million.

Ten years ago - It was a rare summer release for Harry Potter as Harry Potter and The Order of The Phoenix hit the top on its debut knocking Shrek The Third down to 2.

Fifteen years ago - Scooby Doo was the top film of the week making its debut while Minority Report fell to number 2 after a week on top.

Twenty years ago - Batman and Robin stayed on top for a third weekend with the top new film Murder at 1600 landing at 3.

Twenty five years ago - Batman Returns was the top film of the week landing at number 1 on its debut while The Player fell to number 2 after 2 weeks on top.

Spider-Man joins the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the first time in Spider-Man Homecoming and with the help of Iron Man tops the Uk box office.

The new re-boot (the third for the franchise) stars Tom Holland and reaches the top with a £9.3 million opening weekend.

In terms of previous Spider-Man films this is fairly standard with only Spider-Man 3 and The Amazing Spider-Man doing far better.

Despicable Me 3 falls to second place but still manages a £5 million weekend which brings the films total gross to nearly £20 million.

With the school summer holidays fast approaching expect this film to hang around for a while.

Yet gain The Boss Baby is the longest running film of the week with 14 weeks on total on the chart and it is also the highest total grossing film with £28 million.

Twenty five years ago - The Player stayed at the top for a second weekend while the top new film was Sleepwalkers at number 2.

This week, and there was no surprise at all, Avengers Age of Ultron takes over at the top of the UK box office with no problem at all.

Comparing Age of Ultron with its predecessor, Avengers Assemble, this has scored a higher debut weekend, with £18 million from Thursday to Sunday this is £2 million higher that the first film.

To add to the records Avengers Age of Ultron has secured it is the highest grossing debut in the month of April and the highest grossing debut for a superhero movie.

The film is also the 8th highest grossing debut film in the UK of all time, coming in between Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 1 from 2010 and Shrek The Third from 2007.

Fast and Furious 7 falls from the top in its fourth week of release to number 2 and has now taken an incredible £34.7 million.

Also new this week is The Falling which enters at number 10.

Last weekend UK cinema goers came out in big numbers for the revamp of the Spider-Man story in The Amazing Spider-man. The film which stars Britain's Andrew Garfield had an excellent opening weekend where the web slinger take was an amazing £11,091,972 and took 4-5 times more than the rest of box office combined.

The longest running film in the top 15 is Men in Black 3 with 7 weeks on the chart.

Last weeks top film, Ice Age Continental Drift, drops to number 2 taking £719,769 over the weekend, increasing its total over 2 weeks to £2,327,078.

A year ago Transformers: Dark of The Moon was still at the top having taken a total of £19,701,418 while The Guard was the top new film with £473,878 at number 5

Five years ago Shrek The Third still topped the chart taking it's total gross to £25,694,674 as Bruce Willis had a fourth outing as John McClain in Die Hard 4-0 as the highest new entry at 2 with £5,004,916

Ten years ago it was all about Tom Cruise as he shot to the top of the UK box office in the Steven Spielberg directed Minority Report taking £4,506,315 on it's debut weekend.
