It was a very slow weekend with no major new releases at the UK box office, and for the first time since the end of 2020 as cinemas started to close due to the COVID pandemic where no film in over the weekend took over a Million pound.

The top movie of the weekend, and the highest debut, is the event cinema Andre Rieues 2022 Maastricht Concert: Happy Days Are Here Again from the famous violinist which easily beast the new Idris Elba movie Beast~20221 which makes its debut at 2.

Further down the box office there is a new entry for The Invitation which has been on limited release and makes its debut at 12 with £261,791 and Official Competition which also on limited release is new at 15 with £101,916.

UK weekend box office top 5 breakdown 26th - 28th August 2022

Highest new movie of the weekend

Violinist Andre Rieu brings his summer concert from Maastricht to cinemas once again which gives the popular musician the highest debut and number one movie of the weekend.

In what is a very quiet period for cinemas and new releases the event cinema concert takes £798,706 on its debut.

This is of course not the first time Rieu has hit the box office but it is the first time one of his cinema events has hit the top of the box office.

The last time a concert hit the top was during the pandemic in the shape of Michael Ball & Alfie Boe: Back Together which took £175,778 in October 2020.

This has done better that last years summer concert which took, Andre Rieus 2021 Summer Concert: Together Again, which took £420,056 exactly a year ago.

The new movie starring Idris Elba makes its debut at number 2 this weekend with a debut gross of £600,259.

This is perhaps a little on the disappointing side for a film starring such a big name, the last film Elba was in was Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and he has a cameo in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness both of which are among the biggest movies of the year.

Elba stars in another movie released this weekend, Three Thousand Years of Longing, which has not gone down that well in the US so it will be interesting to see next week how well it does in the UK.

The animated feature from the DC Universe of movies stays at number 3 this weekend with a gross of £598,985, a 26% drop.

The movie has now taken £12.2 Million in the UK after 5 weekends of release.

The Brad Pitt starring movie falls to number 4 this weekend with £593,044, a 29% drop which gives the movie a total gros sof £8.1 Million after 4 weeks of release.

Falling from the top to this weeks number 5 the Jordan Peele horror movie takes £576,643, a 50% over its gross last weekend.

The movie has now taken £5.9 Million in the UK after 3 weeks of release.

Japanese animated feature Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero tops the US box office charts on its debut weekend ahead of the new Idris Elba movie Beast~20221 which comes in at number 2.

Also new this weekend is the sequel movie Orphan: First Kill which is new at 12 with $1.7 Million.

US box office QuickView

  • Number 1 - Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero (1st Weekend)
  • Highest debut - Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero (@1)
  • Longest run - Top Gun: Maverick (13 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - Top Gun: Maverick ($683.4 Million)

US weekend box office top 5 breakdown 19th - 21st August 2022

Highest new movie of the weekend

Making its debut at the top of the US box office this weekend is the animated sequel movie from the Dragon Ball Super series of animated films and a sequel to Dragon Ball Super: Broly

The movie takes a very good $20 Million in its debut which is twice that of the first movies $9 Million debut.

Dragon Ball Super: Broly had a 5 week box office run with a lower opening gross and look $30 MIllion so with little in the way of competition in the coming weeks this sequel could have a better run.

The new starring vehicle for superstar Idris Elba lands at number 2 this weekend with a gross of $11.5 Million.

Elba also featured in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 from earlier this year which took $190.9 Million and he laso had a cameo in Thor: Love and Thunder which took $332 Million.

The Brad Pitt starring movie falls to number 3 this weekend with $8 Million, a 40% drop over last weekend.

The movie has now taken $69 Million at the North American box office after 3 weeks of release.

The smash hit if the summer falls to number 4 this weekend, its 13th weekend of release with a gross of $5.9 Million, a tiny 16% drop over last weekend.

No one could have predicted 3 months ago just how big this movie would be, especially 36 years after the original Top Gun, but it has now grossed $683 Million at the North American box office, it is by far the biggest movie of 2022 and I dont see it being caught, even by Avatar: The Way of Water which is out mid December.

The movie is also the 6th top grossing movie of all time in America having just overtaken Avengers: Infinity War and despite the fact it is available on home video and streaming in a weeks time I would be willing to bet it could catch Black Panther as the 5th top movie of all time.

Finally at number 5 is the animated feature from the DC Universe which takes $5.6 Million on its 4th weekend of release.

The movie has a total US gross of $67.3 Million.

Idris Elba is chasing a a man-hunting lion in Beast which has been given a 15 age rating in the UK for strong bloody violence, injury detail, threat.

The movie stars Idris Elba who would be heard in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 as the voice of Knuckles and he also appeared in the Thor movies as Heimdall.

The movie is directed by Baltasar Kormakur who directed Adrift in 2018 and Everest in 2016.

Movie Synopsis

A recently widowed husband returns to South Africa, where he first met his wife, on a long-planned trip with his two young daughters to a game reserve managed by an old family friend and fellow wildlife biologist. Soon a ferocious, man-hunting lion begins attacking them and devouring anyone in its path.
