Comedy action movie Free Guys makes its UK box office debut and only out grosses children's TV favourite The Paw Patrol Movie by the slimmest of margins.

There were no other movies making their debut on the top 5 this week but further down sequel movie Don't Breathe 2 enters at number 7 with £349,702 and the critically acclaimed The Courier is at 8 with £339,020.

  • Longest run - Fast & Furious 9 (8 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - Black Widow (£18.1 Million)

UK box office top 5 breakdown for weekend 13th - 15th August 2021.

Free Guy

Starring Ryan Reynolds this action comedy directed by Shawn Levy takes over at the top of the UK box office on its debut weekend with a gross of £2.4 Million.

Its another movie which has had its release date shifted around a few time because of the pandemic closures but with this debut its not harmed the film much.

The movie is a romance comedy about a video game NPC (Non Playable Character) who suddenly realises what he is will play to the teen audience that is currently on summer holidays in the UK.

The PAW Patrol: Movie

With parents struggling to find things to do with their young children during the summer holidays a cinema is once again starting to be a go to, so we see this TV to big screen adaptation making a bog splash on this weeks chart.

Taking £2.4 Million on its opening weekend it lands at number 2 this weekend a narrowly misses out on a top spot debut.

The Suicide Squad

Falling from the top to number 3 this weekend the comic book bad guy movie seems to be loosing steam quickly and this weekend takes £1.06 Million, a 53% drop over last weekend.

The movie has taken £10.8 Million in the UK over its 3 weeks of release and is the 5th top movie of 2021 in the UK.

Jungle Cruise

Also starting to drop quicker than maybe expected is the Disney fantasy adventure starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt which this week takes £847,031, a 57% drop over last weekend.

The movie has taken £8.4 Million in the UK over 3 weeks of release and is currently the 9th top movie of 2021.

Space Jam: A New Legacy

Falling to number 5 this weekend is the toon and live action basketball sequel movie which takes £506,179 over the weekend, a 53% drop, for a total UK gross of £10.1 Million and the 6th top movie of 2021.

Dreamwork's latest animated movie Home makes it's American debut at the top of the North American box office this week with a very nice $54 million opening weekend.

The film also opened at the top of the Uk box office last week and is set to make a splash worldwide, and with the spring break holiday is the US happening this could ride big for a few weeks.

Missing out on the top spot is Will Farrell's latest wacky comedy Get Hard which lands at number 2 with a $34.6 million debut weekend.

Falling from the top and ending up a 3 this week is The Divergent Series Insurgent, after it's second week of release it gas a US gross of $86.3 million.

Finishing off the top 5 are Cinderella and It Follows.

New films out this week are Denzel Washington in The Equalizer doing battle with Julianne Moore in Map to the Stars.

Having done the media rounds during the week the Antoine Fuqua directed The Equalizer will no doubt hit the top spot over the weekend. The film stars a popular Hollywood figure and has the built in audience of the original 80's TV show.

Map to the Stars is set to make a smaller splash this week, but given the female cast and the male dominated Equalizer this could easily get a top 5 entry, Pride is a challenge but on it's way out already.

The Boxtrolls is bound to loose it's place at the top this weekend and Liam Neesons A Walk Among the Tombstones will most likely stay in the runner up spot behind Mr Washington.

Check back next week for a breakdown of the weekend chart.

After an impressive 3 week run at the top Wolf of Wall Street this week surrenders to animated feature Mr Peabody and Sherman.

An early half term treat for the kids, Mr Peabody makes a splash at the top with £3.9 million over the weekend beating out quite easily a challenge from the Robocop reboot which lands at 2 with £2.4 million.

The Wolf of Wall Street dips to number 3 with a weekend take of £1.6 million bringing it's total to £17 million.

New films this week: -

  • Mr Peabody and Sherman
  • Robocop (2014)
  • Dallas Buyers Club
  • Rusalka Met Opera 2014

This time last year Disney's Wreck-It Ralph made a good debut at the top of the box office knocking the 4 week champion Les Mis from the top.

Five years ago there was also a change at the top with Brad Pitt starring in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button making it's debut knocking Slumdog Millionaire down to number 3.

Ten years ago it was a similar story when Jet Black's starring School of Rock took over at the top on it's debut knocking the previous weeks top film Scary Movie 3 to number 4.

Fifteen years ago (and not to sound too receptive) A Bugs Life took over at the top on it's debut week knocking Shakespeare In Love into the runner up spot.

Finally twenty years ago Mrs Doubtfire was still the big film of February with Free Willy proving to be the big new film of the month.

CES (Consumer Electronics Show) 2010 is kicking off in Las Vegas tomorrow with the Microsoft CEO (Steve Balmer at the moment) being the traditional first Keynote speaker at 6.30pm (PST) on 6th January.

The show always gives a good showcase as what we can expect in the future of technology from the likes of Sony, Samsung, LG, Panasonic and other manufacturers of home entertainment equipment with TV's and film media always having a good showing.

This year Blu-ray and high definition is expected to have a show as the format goes from strength to strength in sales and knocks on the door of DVD in a similar fashion to DBD to VHS 10 years ago.

TV's are on the dawn of a new technology going mainstream, althoug hseen last year OLED is expected to make a bog splash this year. OLED screens are very think and light and give better definition pictures to that of either LCD or plasma, the prices are falling and sizes coming up, expect many TV's PC monitors and other screen devices to be announced.

3D movies made a big impact in cinemas is 2009, and with Avatar doing so well at the box office at the moment studios are keen to push the idea into the home and it's thought that there will be a big display of 3D home movies and TV on display although the technology is new. 3D does have it's doubters who think it's a gimmick and will not catch on.

Also set to make a big impact at CES is tablet PC's, it is widely thought that Apple are on the verge of a big tablet announcement, although we will most likely have to wait until the end of January for that, but there are others who want to enter this market. Tablet PC's could mark a change to the way people view movies on the go, and with Windows 7 touch technology being so good, and probably the excellent iPhone OS being on any Apple device which will allow apps to run on it we could be at the dawn of something big for mobile movies, and in HD of course. Whatever the show has to offer it's always interesting to see what we may have in our homes in the coming years, and what new development in the pipeline, you can follow some of the best coverage, like me, at these site.
