A single weekend at the top for Morbius as video game adaptation Sonic the Hedgehog 2 makes its debut at the top on its box office debut.

Ambulance also makes its debut at number 4 this weekend while further down the box office a re-release of the 1997 movie Selena is new at 9 with $402,280.

US box office QuickView

  • Number 1 - Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1st weekend)
  • Highest debut - Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (@1)
  • Longest run - Spider-Man: No Way Home (17 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - Spider-Man: No Way Home ($803 Million)

US box office top 5 weekend breakdown 8th - 10th April 2022

Sonic the Hedgehog 2

The school Spring Break holiday was the perfect time frame to release this video game sequel movie as it knocks the comic book film Morbius off the top after a single weekend.

The sequel to 2020's Sonic the Hedgehog takes over at the top with a fantastic $71 Million which beats the originals $58 Million debut from Valentines 2020.

With a fantastic debut gross the movie is already the 6th top movie of 2022.

Morbius

The unfavourable reception of the latest comic book movie from Marvel Studios is already showing its effect as the Sony Spiderverse movie falls to number 2 on its second weekend with $10.2 Million, a massive 74% drop.

A total gross of $57 Million takes it into the top 10 movies of 2022 but with a number of high profile movies coming in the following months it will not keep this position for long.

The Lost City

The action comedy from starring Sandra Bullock falls to number 3 this weekend with $9.1 Million, a 38% drop, giving it a $68.8 Million total.

The movie has gained a solid audience and is the 7th top movie of 2022 so far.

Ambulance

The latest movie from action director Micheal Bay takes him away from the Transformers franchise and into a more 'realistic' scenario as he directs Jake Gyllenhaal to an $8.7 Million debut.

The Batman

Falling to number 5 on its 6th weekend of release the Caped Crusader takes $6.5 Million, a 40% drop which gives the movie a $359 Million total.

The movie can be considered a hit and is tracking just above Batman Vs Superman: Dawn of Justice which had taken $325 Million at this point in its box office run.

The movie is the top film of 2022 in North America.

Disney release their latest animated adventure Raya and the Last Dragon on cinemas and on Disney+ premium and score a number 1 hit movie, despite the debut weekend gross being a little lower than maybe expected.

Last weeks top movie, Tom & Jerry: The Movie, falls to number 2 after its successful debut last weekend and also on the top 5 there are new releases for Chaos Walking and Boogie.

Worthy of note this week is the drop of The War With Grandpa out of the top 15 movies, the film has been a long stay during the COVID-19 pandemic and spent 21 weeks on the chart, this week its at 17 with $20 Million total gross.

Us box office Quickview

  • Number 1 - Raya and the Last Dragon (1st Weekend)
  • Highest debut - Raya and the Last Dragon (@1)
  • Longest run - The Croods: A New Age (15 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - The Croods: A New Age ($53,611,445)

This weeks US box office top 5 breakdown 5th - 7th March 2021

Raya and the Last Dragon

Disney return to releasing movies at the US box office, despite it also being on Disney+, and score a number 1 hit, the Kelly Marie Tran and Awkwafina voiced movie takes $8.6 Million on its debut.

Kidpics have been the mainstay of the pandemic era with The War With Grandpa, The Croods: A New Age and last weeks top movie Tom & Jerry: The Movie all doing well, and with spring break on the doorstep this could do well as a return for Disney.

Tom and Jerry

Falling to number 2 this weekend the cat and mouse movie has done very well for itself, especially considering its also available on HBO Max, this week it takes $6.6 Million, a 56% drop from last weekend.

The movie has taken $23 Million at the US box office and is the third top grossing movie of 2021 so far!

Chaos Walking

Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley return to the big screen in this sci-fi movie that has been critically panned but still lands at number 3 this week with a gross of $3.8 Million.

Directed by Doug Liman the movie is available on streaming and I suspect wont be a long stay at the box office.

Boogie

Directed by Eddie Huang this story of a basketball prodigy lands at number 4 this weekend with a debut gross of $1.2 Million.

The Croods: A New Age

Falling to number 5 this weekend is the animated sequel movie which takes $780,000 on its 15th weekend of release, only 38% down from last weekend, giving it a $53.6 Million total.

Dreamwork's latest animated movie Home makes it's American debut at the top of the North American box office this week with a very nice $54 million opening weekend.

The film also opened at the top of the Uk box office last week and is set to make a splash worldwide, and with the spring break holiday is the US happening this could ride big for a few weeks.

Missing out on the top spot is Will Farrell's latest wacky comedy Get Hard which lands at number 2 with a $34.6 million debut weekend.

Falling from the top and ending up a 3 this week is The Divergent Series Insurgent, after it's second week of release it gas a US gross of $86.3 million.

Finishing off the top 5 are Cinderella and It Follows.
