News from around the web

With the summer season just starting we are between blockbusters at the moment and with Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness seemingly set to stay at the top until late May so we get a new release at number 5 with the remake of Firestarter~2022..

World box office QuickView

  • Number 1 - Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness (2nd weekend)
  • Highest debut - Firestarter~2022 (@5)
  • Longest run - The Bad Guys (9 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness ($688 Million)

World box office top 5 weekend breakdown 13th - 15th May 2022

Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness

As with most MCU movie that have such a massive opening weekend the sequel movie to Doctor Strange is no different as it drop 68% on its second weekend.

Still released in 50 countries the movie takes $144.5 Million to give the movie a total $688 Million after 2 weekends of release.

The Bad Guys

Still sitting at number 2 this weekend after a fairly staggered global release is the animated feature from DreamWorks which is released in 67 countries still and takes $13.6 Million on its 9th weekend.

This only a 20% drop after such a lengthy run at the global box office, it gives the movie a total of $165.5 Million.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2

The video game based movie climbs back up the global box office one place with the movie showing in 62 countries it takes $9.8 Million over the weekend, a 32% drop.

The movie, which is not the highest grossing video game adapted movie of all time, has taken an amazing $362.8 Million over 7 weeks of release.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore

Another big fall for the third Fantastic Beasts movie which drop 57% over last weekend from a huge 75 countries.

The weekend gross of the film is $6.3 Million giving it a total global gross of $376 Million.

Firestarter

Highest new entry of the weekend comes in at number 5 as the (pointless!) remake of the 1984 movie Firestarter makes its debut with $5.8 Million from 41 countries.

A year where cinema had a difficult start and was dominated by movies from China as their cinema industry flourished ended with Bond, Superhero movies (as usual), a Chinese mega hit movie and was seen out by the first $1 Billion movie in almost 2 years.

Here is a breakdown of the top 5 movie of 2021 at the global box office.

Spider Man: No Way Home

Spider-Man: No Way Home has had an amazing December at the global box office as it became the top movie of 2021, after only 2 weeks of release it has taken over $1.1 Billion globally.

The movie is in fact the only film of 2021 to go over the milestone of 1 Billion dollars, and as no movie in 2020 came anywhere near the milestone it's the first movie since 2019 to do it.

The Battle At Lake Changjin

Released primarily in China The Battle At Lake Changjin looked like it was going to be the top movie of the year, but it was not to be as it was pipped at the post by a superhero movie and so has to contend with the runner up spot.

The movie took an amazing $902.2 Million, even more amazing considering it was only released in China.

Hi, Mom

The Chinese movie was only released globally in China, Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand, and yet still managed to take $822 Million globally in 2021.

The comedy is the 3rd top film of the year and considering it was released in a time when much of the world was either closed or on very limited cinema capacity it gave comedic relief for parts of the world.

No Time To Die

By the time the 25th Bond movie was released in cinemas it had been delayed many times and the world was ready to see Daniel Craigs last Bond movie.

Cinema goers in many countries were still unsure about going back into a dark with with strangers, but this movie is the 4th top movie of 2021 having taken $765 Million.

Fast & Furious 9

Another movie that got delayed by over a year from its original release, it also had a very staggered global release but it still managed to gross $710.6 Million making it the 5th top movie of 2021.

It took no where near the last few movies in the series, but even with the issues cinema has had this year its a great overal global take.

Here is the top 10 movies global in 2021

  1. Spider-Man: No Way Home - $1.1 Billion
  2. The Battle At Lake Changjin - $902.2 Million
  3. Hi, Mom - $822 Million
  4. No Time To Die - $765 Million
  5. Fast & Furious 9 - $710.6 Million
  6. Detective Chinatown 3 - $695.6 Million
  7. Venom: Let There Be Carnage - $499.1 Million

Mulan was about a week away from release when the world started closing down due the the COVID-19 pandemic, after a couple of new dates Disney have now removed it from their schedule until further notice.

This isn't much of a surprise as America is still deep in the pandemic with cases increasing daily and there is no sign to the end meaning cinemas are still not ready to re-open.

This may seem unfair to the rest of the world which is slowly staring to re-open and cinemas are in limited capacity accepting people in their doors, but who knows like Warner Bros. and Tenet a staggered release may happen.

This is just the latest is what is becoming a long list of films, as mentioned Tenet has been removed indefinitely and today it was announced that Bill & Ted Face The Music will get a simultaneous movie theatre and VOD release.

There are more to come I'm sure as Wonder Woman 1985 and A Quiet Place Part II are just around the corner and the virus is still months away from being controlled in the US.

A staggered global release similar to hot things were before the turn of the Millennium is possible, films used to get released in Europe and Australia often up to a year after their American release.

This was stopped primarily because of piracy and with the internet the ease of distributing pirated films, as opposed to buying the film on VHS from your mate down the pub!

25thframe.co.uk will bring you more as films get delayed.

It was going to happen sooner or later, with the huge spike in the COVID-19 pandemic hitting a majority of America the movie studios are starting to shift release dates again with Christopher Nolan's Tenet loosing its August 12th release.

The more interesting aspect here is that Warner Bros. have not given it a new release date, this is the third time it has shifted date and they are clearly not going to give it a new date until things have settled.

The new movie was meant to be the start of the movie theatre re-opening and the film which would get the public going to the cinema again.

Sony have also shifted the date of Broken Hearts Gallery, and similarly have not given the movie a new release date yet.

Warner Bros. have announced that they will most likely release Tenet staggered around the world, the UK is starting to fully open and box office charts are starting to appear and France's top movie last weekend took over a million dollar at the box office, something not seen for a while.

Australia and New Zealand have also been vigilant at controlling the virus and have been producing box office charts through the whole pandemic.

Disney have Milan set for 21st August and Bill & Ted Face The Music is just around the corner with a release date of 14th August, A Quiet Place Part II also has a date at the start of September, these are all big films which will, most likely, get release date shifts.

The lead is mainly from the US which may not see cinemas open properly this year so maybe we are going to go back to the '90 where America would get most films before the rest of the world, but in reverse!

This week saw the release of a new Star Trek movie at the global box office and as with all the others in the new' universe created by JJ Abrahams it is the top film globally.

Its a softer debut than Star Trek or sci-fi is used to despite good reviews and seemingly a better film then the last one but a $89.6 million debut from 38 countries is strong enough to see it dominate.

The legend of Tarzan is at 2 this week and is getting stronger across the globe as it has a staggered release, its not performing in the US but it is globally.

The film took $51 million from 62 countries for a total global gross of $260 million to date.

Biggest news of the week is the string debut for Skiptrace, the Jackie Chan action film had a big release in Asia and from 3 countries took $44 million on its debut.

Independence Day: Resurgence is the top total grossing movie on the weeks top ten global box office with $361.2 million.

Here is the global top 5.

  1. Star Trek Beyond - $89,600,000
  2. The Legend Of Tarzan - $51,130,000
  3. Ice Age: Collision Course - $51,000,000
  4. Skiptrace - $44,000,000
  5. The Secret Life Of Pets - $39,330,275
