UK weekend box office top 5 breakdown 30th - 1st January 2023

Spending a third week on top of the UK box office is the sequel movie to Avatar which takes £7.6 Million, a 35% increase on its Christmas weekend total.

The movie has now taken a magnificent £44.9 Million at the UK box office after 3 weeks of release.

It is £12 Million ahead of Avatar at the same point of its run and for many years that was the top grossing movie of all time in the UK.

The movie is the 3rd top grossing film of 2022, but is fast catching Top Gun: Maverick and will likely be the top grossing movie released in 2022 before the end of its run.

Highest new movie this weekend

The bio-pic of Whitney Houston starring Naomi Ackie and directed by Kasi Lemmons got released on Boxing Day this year and lands at number 2 on the UK box office.

The movie takes £3.3 Million on its debut despite getting quite a panning from critics.

The movie is looking for Oscar glory which if it achieves could boost the gross quite a but especially around the February window, and even more so if it wins!

Falling to number 2 this weekend is the musical version of the Roald Dahl story of Matilda which takes £2 Million over the New Year weekend, a 45% increase over last weekend.

The former number 1 movie has now taken £20.8 Million over its 6 weeks of release.

The sequel movie to Black Panther climbs back up the box office to number 4 this weekend with a gross of £436,156, a 54% increase over last weekend.

The movies weekend gross being so low and the movie still climbing to number 4 is a reflection of the current state of the box office and shows how much Avatar: The Way of Water is taking from the box office.

The movie has taken a total of £33.2 Million in the UK and is well below that of the first movie which had taken nearly £50 Million 8 weeks into its run.

Disney's latest animated movie, which had been considered a relative flop at the box officem, climbs to number 5 this weekend with a gross of £280,777, a 49% increase.

The movie has grossed a total of £3.1 Million at the UK box office which is about half that of Disney's previous movie Encanto.

A couple of new releases bookend the UK box office this weekend with Avatar: The Way of Water making its debut at the top and The Nutcracker and the Magic Flute new at number 12 with £16,691.

Highest new movie this weekend

Director James Cameron and Disney finally release the long awaited sequel to the highest grossing movie of all time Avatar at the Uk box office.

The movie comes 13 years after the film visit to Pandora, and this movie takes place 10 years after the events of that movie.

The first Avatar took £8.5 Million on its opening weekend and over 18 weeks took over £93 Million and overtook Titanic as the top grossing movie in the UK, it has since been taken by a number of movie and Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the top grossing movie.

This sequel takes £11.6 Million on its debut which makes it the 77th top opening in the UK ever and the 9th top opening in the UK for the month of December.

THe original Avatar was a bit of a slow burner, and with the Christmas season upon us this movie could have good legs until Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is released on 17th February 2023.

After spending an incredible 3 weeks at the top the musical version of the classic Roal Dahl novel falls to number 2 with £1.3 Million, a 34% drop.

The movie has taken an amazing £12.8 Million over its 4 weeks of release.

In comparison the 1997 movie, adjusted for inflation, took £3.7 Million on its 4th weekend for a total of £37.8 Million.

Looking ahead to the movies total gross and if it can become the top grossing movie released in 2022, Top Gun: Maverick took £15.9 Million on its debut weekend and spent 23 weeks on the box office.

Falling to 3 this week is the sequel movie to Black Panther which takes a bit of a hit this weekend with Avatar: The Way of Water being a movie in direct competition, it takes £377,598 over the weekend, a 53% drop.

The movie has taken £31.6 Million over its 6 weeks of release, far lower than the original movie which has taken £44.8 Million at this point.

The movie about Santa Claus being a bad ass drops to number 3 this weekend with £330,606, a 42% drop over last weekend.

The movie as been on the box office fir 3 weeks now and has taken £2.6 Million.

Highest new movie this weekend

Its been a long road to the sequel of the highest grossing movie of all time but this weekend director James Cameron finally delivers his 3 hour movie and it, as expected, hits the ground running.

The movie takes $134 Million on its debut weekend, it takes 88% of the total top 15 this weekend and it the 6th highest grossing movie in the month of December in America.

Compared to the original Avatar this movie is considerably higher than the 2009 opening weekend of $77 Million, even when adjusted for inflation.

Avatar was a slow burner at the box office, and this sequel is getting positive word of mouth, so the road ahead into 2023 looks good.

The David Harbour directed movie which is Santa Claud crossed with Home Alone with violent results remains at number 2 this weekend with a gross of $5 Million, a 36% drop over last weekend.

THis gives the movie a total US gross of $34.9 Million over 3 weeks of release, which comparing to Krampus from 2015, that movie had taken $35.1 Million 3 weeks into its run.

Dropping to number 3 this weekend after 5 weeks at the top is the sequel movie to the 2018 film Black Panther which takes $5.4 Million, a 52% over last weekend.

This gives the movie a total US gross of $418.9 Million after 6 weeks of release, lower than the first movie but still a good gross for 2022.

The movie is now the second highest grossing movie of the year behind Top Gun Maverick, how long it will star there with Avatar: The Way of Water coming up the charts fast remains to be seen.

Despite Disney pulling their latest animated feature from cinemas far earlier than expected the movie only drops to number 4 this weekend with $2.2 Million, a 42% drop over last weekend.

THe movie has now taken $33.7 Million after 4 weeks of release, considerably lower than the 2021 Encanto which was at $81.4 Million 4 weeks into its run.

Dropping to 5 on its 5th weekend is the Ralph Finnes fine dining movie which takes $1.7 Million over the weekend, a 39% drop over last week.

The movie has taken a reasonable $32.1 Million in total over its 5 weeks of release.

As the box office is in a holding patern before the release of this weeks potential mega hit Matilda the Musical remains at the top for a third weekend in a row.

The highest new entry this weeke dis at 7 with The Nutcracker: ROH London 2022 taking £133,397, also along with The Polar Express making a seasonal re-entry and Top Gun: Maverick getting back in to the chart there is a new entry for The Hours: Met Opera 2022 at number 15 with £54,274.

Remaining at the for a third straight weekend is the musical version of the Roal Dahl book Matilda which takes £2.1 over the weekend, a tiny 17% drop.

This gives the movie a total UK gross of £10.7 after 3 weeks of release.

In comparison to the 1996 movie this is way below, adjusted for inflation Matilda would have taken £6.2 Million on its 3rd weekend for a total of £34 Million.

Remaining at number 2 this weeks is the sequel movie from marvel which takes £803,799 on its 5th weekend, a 47% drop.

This gives the Black Panther sequel a total gross of £30.8 to date and it is now the 8th top grossing movie of 2022.

Compared to the first film this movie is far lower, Black Panther took £1.8 Million on its 5th weekend for a total of £42 Million.

Second weekend on the box office for the Home Alone meets Santa Claus movie which this weekend takes £567,350, a 31% drop.

The movies remains at 3 this weekend with total gross now at £1.9 Million on the UK box office.

Disney's latest animated tale stays at number 4 this weekend with £305,802, a 31% drop from last weekend.

This pushes the total gross of £1,7 Million, very low for a Disney film, comparing it to Encanto its less than half thats movie total at this point which was £4,2 Million.

Remaining at 5 this weekend is the fine dining tale of woe which takes £192,827 on its 4th weeeknd, a 42% drop.

The movies total gross is not up to £3 Million.

As the world awaits the new Avatar movie released this coming Friday Black panther: Wakanda Forever spends a 5th weekend at the top of the North American box office as the top 5 stays the same as last weekend!

5 weeks in for the Black Panther sequel and another weekend at the top of the North American box office as the movie takes $11 Million, a small 37% drop.

This pushes the total gross up to $409.8 Million over its 5 weeks of release which makes it the 3rd top movie of 2022.

The first movie took $26.6 Million on its fifth weekend for a total of $605 Million.

The bloodfest that is Santa Claus meets Home Alone remains in the runner up spot for a second weekend with $8.6 Million, a 35% drop.

This gives the movie a $26.6 Million total after 2 weekends of release which comparing it Krampus from 2015 which had taken $28.5 Million after 2 weeks its very close.

Disney's latest animated tale remains at 3 this weekend with $3.6 Million, a reasonable 29% drop over last weekend.

A $30.4 Million total after 4 weeks of release is causing Disney to put the animated feature on Disney+ sooner rather than later and will be removing from cinemas in the coming weeks.

Comparing it to last years Encanto it way lower than the $71 Million that movie took after 3 weeks.

The fine dining movie from director Mark Mylod is at 4 again this weekend with $2.7 Million, a 22% drop over last weekend.

The movie has now taken $29 Million over its 4 weeks of release.

The flying based movie starring Jonathan Majors is at 5 this weekend with $1.99 Million, a low 27% drop over last weekend.

This gives the movie a total of $16.9 Million after 3 weeks of release.
