UK box office top 5 weekend breakdown 6th - 8th May 2022

Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness

It feels like a story we have told many time, but a new Marvel movie is released and there is a big surge in the box office and we have a massive hit at the top.

The sequel to Doctor Strange has been a long time coming as the original was released in 2016, but the character has appeared in many Marvel film since then, including quite predominantly in last years Spider-Man: No Way Home for which is a spiritual successor.

The movie makes its UK debut with £19.7 Million, a staggering 82% of the box office this weekend, which is £10 Million more than its 2016 predecessor but it is way shorted than the £31.8 Milion of the last Spider-Man movie.

The road ahead is looking good for the movie, it will beat out the DC movie The Batman from earlier this year, and it has a shot at being the top movie of 2022, altohugh there are a number of high profile movie yet to come including Jurassic World: Dominion in June.

The movie already is the 6th top movie of 2022 on its debut and look set to at least climb into the top 3 by next weekend.

Downton Abbey: A New Era

A single week at the top for the Downton Abbey sequel which this weekend falls to number 2 with £1.5 Million, a 49% drop over last weekend.

This gives the movie a total gross of £7.6 Million after 2 weeks of release.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2

The smash hit video game movie falls to number 2 this weekend after 6 weeks on the box office with £630,391, a 53% drop over last weekend.

The movie now has a UK total of £23.5 Million and is the 5th top movie of 2022.

The Lost City

The action comedy falls to 4 this weekend with £468,402, a 61% drop over last weekend, this gives the movie an £8.6 Million total after 4 weeks of release.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore

The third in the Fantastic Beasts series can be seen as nothing but a flop for Warner Bros. as the movie falls to 5 this weekend with £401,448, a 67% drop.

The movie has now taken just £19 Million in the UK over 5 weeks of release, it is the 7th top movie of 2022.

In comparison the previous 2 movies 5 weeks into their box office runs were, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them £45 Million and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald £30.5 Million.

As predicted with the surge in COVID-19 cases in the US, the big movie of the holiday season, Wonder Woman 1984, will debut on steaming and cinema on the same day.

The Patty Jenkins directed movie will get the duel release in the US with no word yet on if the Boxing Day release in the UK is changing or a streaming option will be in place as well.

The movie has been changed from earlier in 2020 to later in 2020 a couple of time finally settling for a Christmas release.

With COVID-19 cases on the increase in the US and the UK on a lockdown until early December Warner Bros. have decided to dual release it.

With a vaccine almost imminent this could be perhaps the last big film to get this type of release, altohugh with Universal seemingly a fan of short release windows who know, but thats a story for another day.

Can we say cinemas as we know and love it has died yet?

**UPDATE** It looks like the UK release has been brought forward and will be released in cinemas on December 16th.

With US cinemas still showing no signs of fully re-opening due a massive surge i the COVID-19 pandemic the box office figures are still largely relying on drive-ins

This week the low budget Relic hits the top of the 'box office' on its debut with the rest of the charts moving around but the numbers are all quite small!

Here is a rundown of the top 5 movies in the US 3rd - 5th July 2020.

Relic

Directed by Natalie Erika James on her debut this low budget horror movie stars Emily Mortimer and takes $192K on its debut and is the top movie of the week.

The Wretched

The movie has now surely reached cult status and has been the most dominant movie during the pandemic closures and this week it moves back to number 2 with $25K.

After 10 weeks the movie has now made $1.6 Million at the US box office.

Followed

The Antoine Le directed movie is at 3 this week with $23K and after 3 weeks has taken $423K.

Becky

5 weeks in and the Lulu Wilson starring movie takes $20K for the weekend and $903K in total.

Miss Juneteenth

Channing Godfrey Peoples directs this movie about a black beauty pageant which takes $11K this week for a 2 week total of $70K.

When cinemas first closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic the major studios started shifting their release schedule, with a new spike in the virus studios are starting to make even more changes.

Warner Bros. Recently changed the release date of Wonder Woman 1984 October 2nd and then just this week they moved Tenet to August 12th.

Now today Disney moves the release of Mulan, again, to August 21st, this is the second move for a movie that should have been released in March, just as the virus hit the world.

What is interesting is that it seems the studios are delaying the release of these film worldwide, although it is only the US which is seeing a large spike, especially in the south, of the virus.

The UK government announced this week that cinemas in the UK could start reopening from July 4th, and in much of Europe and Australia many cinemas are open already.

With the US expecting the surge to get even worse, with potential lockdowns happening again, it is anyones guess when it will be safe for cinemas to open.

You can expect there to be more rescheduled film coming, and I hate to say it but some films, Mulan, Bill & Ted Face The Music and The New Mutants to name a few missing a theatrical release and going direct to VOD.

The Divergent Series Insurgent opened up in 77 countries this last weekend and without too much of a challenge becomes the top film across the globe.

Taking a world grossing $101 million the film easily knocks Cinderella down to second place after a single week as the global top film.

New animated film Home is 3rd this week with a global gross of $19.2 million and Tak3n gets a new surge of life after opening in China and takes $18.6 million.
