News from around the web

With Christopher Nolans new film Tenet getting a cinema release in the coming weeks one of his greatest movies gets a re-release on its 10th anniversary and hits the top spot.

Elsewhere on the box office a live action version of Pinocchio from Italy is the top new movie of the weekend while the critically acclaimed Babyteeth is new at number 8.

Things are getting better in the Uk as box office takings this week for the top 15 movies are nearly £900K, that more than doubles last weeks takings.

Here is a rundown of the top 5 movies in the UK 14th - 16th August 2020.

Inception

Is it really 10 years since this film hit Uk cinemas, it would seem that way and the movie gets a re-release to celebrate, and in the current post COVID-19 market it take the top spot.

The movie takes £207.6K on its new debut which gives it a £35 Million total gross since its 2010 release and 12 weeks total on the box office.

Unhinged

Last weeks top film falls to number 2 this week as Russell Crowe continues his rage which takes £136.3K over the weekend.

After a couple of weeks at the top this is the movies third weekend on the chart and the movie has taken £675.9K to date.

Pinocchio

Making its debut at number 3 is this Italian retelling on the classic story best known by the Disney version from 1940.

This version is directed by Matteo Garrone and takes £108.6K on its debut weekend.

Onward

Pixars latest hit is at number 4 this weekend and has been the most consistent movie on the box office over the last 6 months.

This week the Dan Scanlon directed feature takes £92K which pushes its total UK gross to £6 Million after 10 weeks on the box office, all of them inside the top 5.

100 Wolf

Three weeks on the chart and the Alexs Stadermann animated comedy is at number 5 with £83.9L=K taking its UK total to £278.2K.

Harry Potter And The Cursed Child was written as a stage show and it was promised it would always stay that way, the book that was released soon after the West End production opened was in play form not novel, but the signage for the play has just recently been changed to reflect that of the movies so does this mean that a movie version is in the works?

The original sign was not unique and in many ways reflected that of the original publications in the UK, whereas the logo used on the movies was closer to that of the original US version, and the new logo was presented on Broadway first in a full Time Square takeover and on Back To Hogwarts Day.

The change has had a lot of fans angry about this claiming that the story is seperated from the Harry Potter cannon and this marks that seperation, but why would there be this change?

The obvious conclusion is that there is a movie version on the way, Warner Bros. owns the movie rights to the series and have been a partner to Harry Potter Theatre which produces the stage show.

The rumours have been denied by everyone including J.K. Rowling who posted some cryptic tweets, but are they just not telling the absolute truth because it's not time to announce it yet?

For Warner Brox. who have made Billions of dollars from the series want that money to keep rolling in, The Fantastic Beasts series had a promising start but last year Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald didn't do as well as they would have liked.

The theme park area at Universal Studios are doing well, and are keeping the franchise alive, but there needs to be a new movie for Warner Bros. that fans can sink their teeth into.

Rowling could write a whole new set of Harry Potter centric stories especially for the screen, but she will need to please the fans, and she has always stated after the books she wont revisit Harry Potter and his world again.

She keeps tight control over everything Harry Potter, but she could commission a new writer/screenplay write to come up with some new stories, The Cursed Child was written by Jack Thorne and John Tiffany with Rowling only providing the story, so this is ground she has been down before.

As much as this is something which may be explored in the future, why bother when you have a tried and tested story already there and waiting for a screen version to be produced, its Harry Potter, its already written and it would most likely take over a Billion dollars at the box office.

Also it would bring the story to the fans who either dont go to the theatre, it is a niche past time which although having the boy who lived as brought more more bums on seats to theatre in the same way the books got people reading again you are still making inaccessible to some.

I am going to stick my neck out and say there will be a movie version of Harry Potter And The Cursed Child in the long run, there is just too much of a money making opportunity there for Warner Bros., and as the film is already in 2 parts I am sure it can be dragged out to a trilogy, a 3 Billion plus grossing trilogy.

Zombies are ever popular and this were getting a sequel to Zombieland and this new film starring Bill Murray and Adam Driver called The Dead Don't Die.

The film is directed by Jim Jarmusch who cut his directing teeth on Permanent Vacation in 1980.

The BBFC have given the film a 15 age certificate for gory images, strong violence, language and the film has an official run time of 105 minutes (1 hour 45 minutes).

There was no stopping Michael Myers attacking Jamie Lee curtis across the globe the week and the Halloween sequel dominates the global box office on its debut week of release.

Halloween

40 years afte the events of the original Halloween Micheal Myers has come back to haunt Jamie Lee Curtis, and this time he drags her family along for the ride.

The horror film makes its global debut with $91.8 million and it was released in 24 countries making a per terretory average of $3.8 million.

Venom

Sony's Marvel connection is still proving strong and their anti-hero is still showing his teeth across the globe at number 2 where the parasite takes $50.4 million from 66 countries, the film has now taken $461 globally.

A Star Is Born

Bradly Cooper and Lady Gaga just can't get a break and fall to number 3 this week with $42.1 million from 76 countries pushing the films global gross to $201 million.

First Man

The film about Neil Armstrong takes $22 million this week from 48 countries, the film starring Ryan Gosling has now taken $55 million.

Smallfoot

Holding onto the number 5 slot for one more week the animated comedy takes $20.6 million this week from 72 countries for a total global gross of $137 million.

Due for release this Summer Jurassic Woeld: Fallen Kingdom gets a second trailer revealing more of the story.

Looks like they have created (another) new Dinosaur which is on the rampage.

This trailer is all teeth and saliva but it looks exciting and Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard look like they are in good form.
