News from around the web

After bypassing a theatrical release, which upset a number of fans, the long awaited sequel Hocus Pocus 2 becomes the biggest debut for the streaming platform Disney+ to date.

The movie which is a follow up to the 1993 movie Hocus Pocus was released onto the platform on Friday 30th September and heads up their Halloween season.

The movie stars Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy and Sarah Jessica Parker who all reprise their roles as the Sanderson Sisters, a trio of witches who crave for the souls of children.

The original movie was not a hit on its release but has over the last 30 years become a massive hit raking up views over the October Halloween season each year.

It's a shame than the movie never got a theatrical release as cinemas are struggling for big hits at the moment as there has not been an event movie released in a long time, this would have had a £3 - £5 Million debut easily.

Disney seems intent on pushing its streaming service which new movies like this and its 150 Million + subscribers makes it one of the largest streaming platforms.

Legendary have today officially announced that the Denis Villeneuve directed Dune will get a sequel, currently called Dune Part Two.

Dune hit UK and US cinemas this weekend and has hit the top spot on both box office charts on its debut, in the UK it took nearly £6 Million while in the US it took over $40 Million.

A sequel has been touted for a while and with the success in cinemas, and no doubt its success on the HBO Max streaming service a sequel became inevitable.

The movie has been out globally for some time and has to date taken over $220 Million.

No release date has been given yet but a 2023 release is most likely. Legendary have given a very quick teaser image though.

America celebrates Halloween in style and the Hollywood studios embrace this aplenty and this week the American public flocked to see the new Saw movie Jigsaw.

Bringing in a relatively low, especially for an established series, $16.2 million Jigsaw hits the top during the season when people like to be scared.

Expect the film to sink down the charts quickly as if often the case with films that rely on seasonal attraction for its return.

Boo2! A Madea Halloween from Tyler Perry falls from the top on its second weekend to number 2 with a weekend take of $10 million.

This brings the films total gross to $35 million after 2 weeks of release, this followup is falling faster than the previous film which came out exactly a year ago.

Also new this week is Thank You For Your Service which enters the US box office at number 6 with a $3.7 million opening weekend.

Longest running and highest total grossing film this week is for another week IT, the film has now taken $323.7 in total grosses and been on the box office for 8 weeks, this week it sits at 10.

On Friday Star Wars: The Force Awakens because the highest grossing film ever at the UK box office.

It beat out the previous holder Skyfall which had a total gross in the UK of £103 million, Skyfall was the first film to make over £100 million at the UK box office.

This is just the latest in a long line of records the latest Star Wars film have managed to achieve, but highest grossing film in the world still alludes it.<> That record is held by Avatar with $2.8 billion, the Chinese market is key to the film coming close to Avatars total, it is released there this weekend.
