News from around the web

The Todd Philips directe movie Joker continues its run at the top film across the world as it expands to more countries while the top 5 is relatively unchanged with the new animated movie The Addams Family coming in at number 4 as the highest new film.

Joker

Starring Joaquin Phoenix as the psychotic title character the controversial film has done far better than expected and this week expands its country count to 80 and takes $178.7 Million.

The film did incredibly well with ticket sales over the week and its total gross is now at $543.9 Million after 2 weeks of release and a $1 Billion total does not seem unlikely now.

Gemini Man

The Ang Lee directed movie expands its country count this week to 54 but can't beat Joker on the box office as it take $51 Million over the weekend from 54 territories.

This takes the film total global gross to $59.5 Million after 2 weeks of release.

The Captain

The Chinese language film falls to number 3 this week with a weekend gross of $33.4 Million from just 6 countries.

The film has taken an incredible $340.9 Million after 2 weeks of release.

The Addams Family

MGM bring us a new take on the 1960's TV show this week which enters the box office at number 4 with $30.2 Million, but this is from a single country of release.

The film goes wide over the coming weeks across the rest of the globe where we should see the film climb the box office.

My People, My Country

The series of short stories brought together to create one movie falls to number 5 this week with $23 Million from 10 countries, the film has an incredible total gross now of $357.4 Million after just 2 weeks.

Joker makes its global debut at the top of the box office with little in the way of competition while there are a trio of Chinese films which make their way into the top 5 as they expand to more countries.

Joker

With good word of mouth the Joaquin Phoenix starring movie has smashed the global box office on its debut weekend with a gross of $234 Million from 74 countries.

This is higher than expected and the good word of mouth for the movie should allow it to be one of the biggest October hits, and certainly one of the biggest DC films.

My People, My Country

The Chinese film which is a collection of 7 shot stories from different directors is available in 8 territories and it enters the global box office at number 2 with a weekend gross of $100.6 Million.

The film has been on release since 1st October (last Tuesday) and its total global gross is already $286.9 Million.

The Captain

This real life drama of an airline captain who saved a plane destined for disaster lands at number 3 this week with a weekend gross of $100.4 Million from 6 countries.

The film was released at the start of the week and has a total global gross of $250.4 Million.

Abominable

Dreamworks animated film has done well but is now falling fast and this week is at number 4 with a weekend gross of $36.6 Million from $46 countries.

This puts the film total gross at $76.3 Million after 2 weeks of release.

The Climbers

Another true life Chinese drama hits the box office at number 5 this week with a weekend gross of $30 Million from 3 countries.

Including previews this puts the films total global gross at $106.6 Million.

Warner Bros. delve into their DC Universe characters with a less known character that was the original Captain Marvel, and its childlike humour pleases audiences and takes it to the top on its debut weekend.

Shazam!

Making its debut at the top of the US box office with a debut weekend gross of $53.4 million is this origins film from the DC Universe, but not part of Warner Bros. official series of films.

Audience and critics both seem to like the film, similar to how Deadpool took the super hero genre in a different direction, which should put the film on path to a decent final return.

Pet Sematary

The adaptation from Stephen Kings novel enters the US box office at number 2 this week with $25 million, half that of Shazam!

Although getting good word of mouth the film is not getting the same kind of buzz of the authors previous adaptation, It, from 2017.

Dumbo

Falling from the top to number 3 on its second week of release the Tim Burton directed movie takes $18 million this weekend pushing its total US gross to $76.2 million.

Us

Jordan Peele's much praised horror film is starting to fall fast down the box office, it takes $13.8 million on its 3rd weekend of release for a $152 million total.

Captain Marvel

Finally in the top 5 is Marvels official version of the Captain Marvel character, 5 weeks in its takes $12.6 million which pushes its total gross to an incredible $374.1 million, Shazam! will not reach that during its box office run.

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World

Spending a 7th week on the US box office this week is the dragon based animation, the longerst run of the week, the films has now taken $156.6 million.

The new films from the DC Universe tops the global box office this week with ease as Shazam! knocks Dumbo off the top spot, Pet Sematary and P Storm also enter in the top 5.

Shazam!

Entering the global box office at the top on its debut weekend is the original Captain Marvel who is now known as Shazam! and makes its debut with $155.5 million from 80 countries, the highest on the chart this week.

With the Marvel version of Captain America also making its debut just recently its interesting to see this DC, almost forgotten character who was a Captain before Carol Danvers still manages a decent debut.

Dumbo

Tim Burton's live action version of Disney's much loved animation falls to number 2 this week with $57.8 million from 56 countries.

This puts the films total global gross at $213 million after 2 weeks of release.

Pet Sematary

Stephen Kings famous novel gets a second films version and makes its debut at number 3 this week with $42.3 million from 47 countries.

The film has had a lot of hype but average reviews so we could see this sink quite quick and not repeat the success of It from a couple of years back.

P Storm

Making its way into the top 5 after a few weeks of release this Chinese film is released in just 5 countries but manages to gross $27.5 million.

Captain Marvel

Rounding out the top 5 this week is the Marvel version of the Captain Marvel story which takes $26.7 million on its 6th week of release.

This push the film past another milestone as its now past the billion dollar mark with a global gross of $1.04 billion.

As the year comes to a close its time to reflect on the films that hit the big time in 2016 - so what were the highest grossing film at the global box office?

The top grossing film across the globe in 2016 is Captain America: Civil War - this surprised me a bit but is testament on how well established the Marvel Cinematic Universe is now.

The third in the Captain America series - although some might say it is more an Avengers movie that Captain America Movie - took $1.5 billion at the global box office.

Compared to 2015 this is far lower than Jurassic World which took $1.6 billion but is on par with the number 2 film Fast and Furious 7 with took $1.5 billion (for the record Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens took more but much of that was in 2016). Finding Dory is the second highest grossing film of 2016 with $1.027 billion while not very far behind it is Zootopia (Zootropolis) which took $1.026 billion.

Rounding out the top 5 is The Jungle Book and The Secret Life of Pets wich both took a shade under a billion each.

The top 2 films were both sequels and 6 of the top 10 films were either sequels or part of an already established franchise, and Deadpool at 7 although not part of a franchise is certainly part of the Marvel Superhero world.

Disney did very well this year with the top 4 film all being from the studio and it wouldn't surprise me if Rogue One: A Star Wars Story ended up in the top five film by the time it ends its run.

Four of the top 10 are superhero movies, four of the top ten have animals as their primary cast, 3 are animations (arguably 4) and 8 have sequels and further adventures in the series already announced. Thanks 2016 at the global box office, here is the full top 10.

  1. Captain America: Civil War - $1,153,304,495
  2. Finding Dory - $1,027,771,569
  3. Zootopia - $1,023,784,195
  4. The Jungle Book - $966,550,600
  5. The Secret Life of Pets - $875,457,937
