Sonic the Hedgehog 2

The school Spring Break holiday was the perfect time frame to release this video game sequel movie as it knocks the comic book film Morbius off the top after a single weekend.

The sequel to 2020's Sonic the Hedgehog takes over at the top with a fantastic $71 Million which beats the originals $58 Million debut from Valentines 2020.

With a fantastic debut gross the movie is already the 6th top movie of 2022.

Morbius

The unfavourable reception of the latest comic book movie from Marvel Studios is already showing its effect as the Sony Spiderverse movie falls to number 2 on its second weekend with $10.2 Million, a massive 74% drop.

A total gross of $57 Million takes it into the top 10 movies of 2022 but with a number of high profile movies coming in the following months it will not keep this position for long.

The Lost City

The action comedy from starring Sandra Bullock falls to number 3 this weekend with $9.1 Million, a 38% drop, giving it a $68.8 Million total.

The movie has gained a solid audience and is the 7th top movie of 2022 so far.

Ambulance

The latest movie from action director Micheal Bay takes him away from the Transformers franchise and into a more 'realistic' scenario as he directs Jake Gyllenhaal to an $8.7 Million debut.

The Batman

Falling to number 5 on its 6th weekend of release the Caped Crusader takes $6.5 Million, a 40% drop which gives the movie a $359 Million total.

The movie can be considered a hit and is tracking just above Batman Vs Superman: Dawn of Justice which had taken $325 Million at this point in its box office run.

The movie is the top film of 2022 in North America.

It was another good weekend for Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds at the tUK box office as their comedy action movie Free Guy spends a second weekend at the top with hardly a drop on its debut gross.

Highest new movie of the weekend is People Just Do Nothing: Big In Japan which brought people out to the cinema but not in the number was expected while new action movie Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins can only manage a number 6 debut with £542,265.

Also new on this weekends top 10 is The Night House which enters at number 9 with £315,610.

Uk box office top 5 breakdown weekend 20th - 22nd August 2021

Free Guy

Surprise hit of the summer starring Ryan Reynolds and Jodie Comer remains at the top of the UK box office for a second weekend taking £2.2 Million, a tiny 8% drop over its debut gross last weekend.

This could be contributed to the fact the UK public is starting to gain confidence going out the the cinema again, and equally it is a movie squarely aimed at the teen audience and the UK school are still out on their summer holidays.

The movie has taken £7.19 Million after 10 days of release and should be a top 10 movie of 2021 by next weekend.

The PAW Patrol: Movie

Again benefitting from the school holidays the Children's TV favourite remains at number 2 for a second weekend with a gross of £1.03 Million, although showing its limited appeal it is 57% down on last weekend.

The movie has taken £4.4 Million on its 10 days of release.

People Just Do Nothing: Big In Japan

The hit BBC 3 TV show about a fake reality pirate radio show from London went big screen this weekend and landed at number 3 on the UK box office with £896,992.

It was perhaps expecting to be a bit bigger in the UK as the TV show has created a lot of hype and won BAFTA's, it will probably do well until the schools go back as it has big teen appeal.

The Suicide Squad

The comic book super villain movie falls to number 4 this weekend with £653,885, a 39% drop over last weekend, this gives the movie a total UK gross of £12.3 Million and the fourth top movie of 2021.

Jungle Cruise

Rounding out the top 5 is Disney's action movie starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt which takes £652,473, a small 23% drop thanks to the school holidays, giving the movie a total of £10 Million and the 7th top movie of 2021.

Free Guy held on for a second weekend as the top film across the world with The Paw Patrol Movie impressively jumping to number 2 on its second weekend.

Free Guy

Starring Ryan Reynolds this action comedy directed by Shawn Levy takes over at the top of the UK box office on its debut weekend with a gross of £2.4 Million.

Its another movie which has had its release date shifted around a few time because of the pandemic closures but with this debut its not harmed the film much.

The movie is a romance comedy about a video game NPC (Non Playable Character) who suddenly realises what he is will play to the teen audience that is currently on summer holidays in the UK.

The PAW Patrol: Movie

With parents struggling to find things to do with their young children during the summer holidays a cinema is once again starting to be a go to, so we see this TV to big screen adaptation making a bog splash on this weeks chart.

Taking £2.4 Million on its opening weekend it lands at number 2 this weekend a narrowly misses out on a top spot debut.

The Suicide Squad

Falling from the top to number 3 this weekend the comic book bad guy movie seems to be loosing steam quickly and this weekend takes £1.06 Million, a 53% drop over last weekend.

The movie has taken £10.8 Million in the UK over its 3 weeks of release and is the 5th top movie of 2021 in the UK.

Jungle Cruise

Also starting to drop quicker than maybe expected is the Disney fantasy adventure starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt which this week takes £847,031, a 57% drop over last weekend.

UK box office top 5 breakdown weekend 13th - 15th August 2021

Free Guy

Another movie delayed due to the pandemic is the latest comedy from maverick director Shawn Levy which makes its US box office debut at number 1 with a weekend gross of $28.4 Million.

The director pumped out a lot of movies in the early 2000 and 2010's but this is his first movie since 2014, but getting Ryan Reynolds to star has turned it into a hit.

Ryan Reynolds himself was in The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard from earlier this year which didn't quite hit the right note with audiences and ended its US run with nearly $40 Million.

Don't Breathe 2

Sequel to 2016's Don't Breathe the movie brings back Stephen Lang as the Blind Man and enters the US box office at number 2 with $10 Million.

Jungle Cruise

Disney's themepark ride based movie falls to number 3 this weekend with a gross of $9 Million, a 43% drop over last weekend.

The movie starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt has now taken $82.1 Million in the US over 3 weeks and is the 6th top movie for 2021.

Respect

Making its debut at number 4 is the bio-pic movie of Aretha Franklin starring what I'm sure will be an Oscar winning turn from Jennifer Hudson as the late singer, the movie takes $8.8 Million over the weekend.

The Suicide Squad

A hard fall from the top to number 5 for the comic book supervillain movie which takes $7.7 Million on its second weekend of release, a very large 71% drop over last weekend.

The movie has now taken $42.8 Million total over the 2 weeks of release.
