News from around the web

The might of Avengers: Endgame has come to an end in the UK, at least for the time being, as Pokémon: Detective Pikachu takes over at the top on its debut weekend of release.

Pokémon: Detective Pikachu

The Nintendo favourite bounces to the top of the UK box office on its opening weekend of release with a debut gross of £5 million.

The film which is directed by Rob Letterman and stars Ryan Reynolds as the voice of Pikachu and Justice Smith removes Avengers: Endgame after just 2 weeks, although the Marvel movie is still going strong.

Avengers: Endgame

The might of the Marvel film is still going in the UK as the film takes £4.4 million on its third weekend which takes its total UK gross to £80.4 million.

It is now the 6th top film in the UK having just overtaken Titanic, the film now has Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Avatar in its sights.

The Hustle

The buddy con artist film remake makes its debut at number 3 this weekend after luke warn reviews across the board.

The film starring fan favourites Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson takes £1 million on its opening weekend.

Long Shot

The romantic comedy has stalled a but at the box office and falls to number 4 on its second weekend with a gross of £413,059 to boost its total to £1.8 million.

The Curse of La Llorona

Finishing off the top 5 this week is the horror movie from The Conjuring Universe which takes £243,601 from its second weekend of release to take a total UK gross of £1.2 million.

Dumbo

The Disney film is the longest running film on the UK box office this week with 7 weeks and a £24.6 million total gross.

The second weekend of Avengers: Endgame and the film is still pulling in audiences and takes a lion share of the box office takings for the weekend, Long Shot comes in second but takes less than a £1 million on its debut.

Avengers: Endgame

The Marvel mega smash manages to pull in a mammoth £14.3 million at the UK box office on its second weekend of release, and although massive is just under the second weekend of Skyfall from 2012 which took £16.1 million.

With 2 massive weekends the film should start to slow next week, although Marvel/Disney have not slowed on the marketing and repeat visits could happen in the coming weeks.

The film will take over £100 million at the UK box office potentially beating Skyfall, but Star Wars: The Force Awakens £123 million might be a big ask.

Still the film has taken £69.3 million so far and will end up as the top film of 2019, Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker might take more but with a release date of December 19th the total gross will be split between 2 different years (2019 and 2020).

Long Shot

Avengers: Endgame was the only film to take over a million pound at the UK box office this week but the new film from director Jonathan Levine starring Charlize Theron and Seth Rogen makes its debut at number 2.

Captain Marvel

The Marvel predecessor to Endgame is at 9 this week and has spent 9 weeks on the box office with a total gross of £39.2 million.

With the release of a new Marvel movie there is always excitement, but this one is a bit different with pre-hype predicting the film would be big and sure enough Avengers: Endgame opens to the largest weeekend gross in the US ever.

Avengers: Endgame

Films open big but none this big and the final instalment of this phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe opens to the tune of $350 million.

This easily beats the previous biggest opening, Avengers: Infinity War, by 36% proving that built up hype can work, and with the critics generally liking it film it must have helped its box office.

Captain Marvel

Getting a good boost from its Marvel stablemate this film goes back to number 2 this week with a gross of $8 million on its 8th weekend.

This pushes the films total US gross to $413.5 million and eyeing its next milestone of half a billion dollars.

As expected the anticipation for Avengers: Endgame spilled over this weekend and the Marvel film broke records all over the place on its debut weekend leaving every other film on release to mop up the tiny remainder of box office cash.

Avengers: Endgame

The Marvel film was expected to open big but perhaps no-one expected it to open quite this big as the much hyped and anticipated film broke the box office opening weekend record, set by Avengers: Infinity War, and became the first film to ever open with over a billion dollars on global takings.

The film took an unprecedented, and benchmark setting, $1.2 Billion from 55 countries over its first weekend, which including previews did extend to 5 days, but still to enter the Billion dollar club so quick is a new record.

The film is already the 13th highest grossing film of all time globally, and by next weekend will most likely be in the top 5 which will take a gross of $1.67 Billion or higher.

All eyes will be on the film in the coming weeks to see if can beat the 10 year old record of Avatar and beat that films $2.7 Billion total gross.

The Curse of La Llorona

It may have been the lowest grossing weekend in the US for a decade but people chose the pre Avengers: Endgame weekend to scare themselves with The Conjuring Universe horror film The Curse Of La Llorona.

The Curse of La Llorona

From the Universe of The Conjuring, Annabelle and The Nun comes another offshoot as audience in the US chose to be scared by the ever popular series.

The new film from director Michael Chaves took $26.5 million on its debut weekend of release.

Shazam!

Falling to number 2 this weekend is the DC Universe superhero movie that takes $17.3 million on its 3rd weekend of release.

The film has now taken $121 million in the US and has now surpasses $100 million milestone.

Breakthrough

Audiences not in the mood to be scared this weekend instead went for this true life drama which enters the box office at number 3 with a debut weekend gross of $11.1 million, $14.6 million with previews.

Captain Marvel

The superhero character will be in cinemas again this coming weekend as part of Avengers: Endgame, but her solo movie debut is still at number 4 on the chart this week.
