News from around the web

There were a trio of big new releases this week and as expected The Fault in Our stars hit the top, the other two didn't perform any where near expectations.

Based on the novel of the same name The Fault in Our Stars is a teenage love story and a tragedy. Directed by Josh Boone who previously directed Stuck in Love from 2003 and starring Shailene Woodley.

Taking £3.4 million from the weekend it knocks 22 Jump Street into the number 2 spot after 2 weeks at the top, Jump Street has taken £12.7 million to date.

Under performing and new at 6 this week is the Clint Eastwood directed Jersey Boys. Taking just £415,608 on it's debut this could be set to be one of Eastwood's worst performing films.

Also not doing as well as expected is Kevin Costner's return to the big screen in 3 Days to Kill. The McG directed film only managed £324,560 over the weekend.

This time last year Man of Steel kept it's place at the top leaving World War Z to debut in the runner up spot.

Five years ago Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen made a debut at the top knocking off The Hangover from it's debut position at the top.

Ten years ago Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban stayed at the top leaving Mean Girls to make it's debut at three with The Day After Tomorrow staying at 2.

Fifteen years ago The Matrix was refusing to shift off the top and the highest new film was Cruel Intentions at three.

The biggest of the weeks new releases hits the top of the box office with no current releases able to challenge it.

The 21 Jump Street sequel 22 Jump Street debuts at the top of the box office this week with a weekend take of around £4.8 million.

21 Jump Street was released in March 2012, a tougher time of year for a films release, it debuted at 2 taking £1.5 on it's debut going on to take nearly 10 million over 7 weeks. With better reviews this time around 22 should do better.

Jump Street removes last week top film Maleficent down to the runner up position although it still manages a £2 million weekend with a 10 day gross of £11 million.

Little else doing well on the box office this week, especially Grace of Monaco with enters the box office at 9 with just over £200,000 is takings, the one off D-Day concert did better from far less screens.

This time last year and despite the terrible reviews Will Smith and son debuted at the top with After Earth knocking The Hangover Part III to second place.

Five years ago the Terminator saga continued with Terminator Salvation taking over at the top on it's debut knocking Night at the Museum 2 down to second place.

Ten years ago Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban took over from The Day After Tomorrow at the top which fell to second place.

Fifteen years ago Notting Hill retained it's place at the top for a second week leaving Human Traffic to debut at 3 at the highest new film.

Twenty years ago Four Weddings and a Funeral was still the top film around with Beverly Hills Cop III and Bad Girls debuting well.

Twenty Five years ago Indianan Jones and the Last Crusade was still the top film in June with the Bond film Licence to Kill and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels debuting well.

Despite a crowded weekend of releases at the box office when the figures came in it was clear that there was a big winner and the Disney Hype machine had worked yet again.

Angelina Jolie takes her first big budget role in a number of years in Maleficent and with ease becomes the biggest film of the week with a £6.6 million take.

Disney are on a roll, it looks like Maleficent will be a sizeable hit and their last film, Frozen, has become one of the biggest film of all time taking over $1 Billion world wide.

After a single week at the top X-Men Days of Future Past drops a single place to the runner up spot with £3.5 million for the weekend and £19.5 million in total.

Also released this week and charted were - Edge of Tomorrow - A Million Ways to Die In The West - Jimmys Hall

A year ago there was little move at the box office as The Hangover Part III held on for a second week and the highest new film was The Purge starring Ethan Hawke at number 6.

Five years ago Night at the Museum 2 held on for another week keeping Drag Me To Hell from Sam Raimi to debut at 2.

Ten years ago The Day After Tomorrow debuted strong at the top of the box office leaving Troy to fall down to number 2.

Fifteen years ago Notting climbed up to the top after a number 6 debut from a limited release knocking She's All That to the number 2 spot.
