The Eight Hundred Review | Movie - Empire  Empire Fri, 18th September 2020

With the 2020 box office collapsing in March due to the global pandemic the Chinese market was the first an quickest to recover and it dominated the global scene over the whole year.

The top grossing movie of the year was The Eight Hundred wich was released in August and did big business in China.

Chinese films accounted for 6 of the top 20 movies of the year and 7 of the movie were released in 2019 with a holdover in 2020.

Tenet which was the first big movie released during the pandemic made it into the top 5 movies of the year despite being considered a flop.

Many movies have had there releases moved to 2021 and cinemas did not have the massive tentpole pictures that would have pulled in over a Billion dollars in revenue, in fact its the first time in over a decade there has been no movie taking over $1 Billion.

Here are the top 5 movies by gross across the globe in 2020.

The Eight Hundred

A massive hit in China the action war epic is directed by Hu Guan and took $161 Million on its full opening weekend.

Over its full global release the movie took $441.8 Million making the top grossing global movie of the year.

Bad Boys For Life

After a lengthy gap Will Smith and Martin Lawrence re-teamed as the Miami cops and the movie was a global smash.

Released at the start of the year its release just missed the cinemas closures due to COVID-19 and took $418.2 Million.

1917

Sam Mendes released his Oscar nominated was movie in America in late 2019 but got its global release in early 2020 and its the 3rd top movie of 2020 with $375.4 Million.

My People, My Homeland

Directed by 7 of Chinas top directors this anthology movie took $101 Million durings its Chinese opening.

Globally the movie is the 4th highest grossing of the year with $371.1 Million.

Tenet

In America this movie was moved to an August release with studios hoping that cinemas would have re-opened after 4 months of closures, but the global pandemic had other ideas and although countries has started to re-opened cinemas had limited capacity.

The movie did relatively well in global cinemas but with mixed reviews it was not the film Warner Bros. had hoped, but a top five of the year is not bad with a gross of $362.6.

After 4 weeks at the top of the global box office Christopher Nolans Tenet is replaces, this week at least, by the Chinese release Leap which makes its debut at the top.

The Chinese box office is, at the moment, by far the highest grossing market and it is responsible for the high grosses of Tenet, Mulan, The Eight Hundred and now Leap.

Here is a quicklook breakdown of the top 15.

  • Number 1 - Leap
  • Highest debut = Leap (@1)
  • Longest Run - Onward (29 weeks)
  • Highest global gross - The Eight Hundred ($441,654,352)

Weekly breakdown of the top 5 global movies 25th - 27th September 2020.

Leap

Making its debut at the top is this Chinese movie from director Peter Ho-Sun Chan and starring Li Gong which takes $24.7 Million over the weekend on its debut.

The movie is only released in China at the moment and with Tenet still to open in some territories it will be interesting to see what to top looks like in the coming weeks.

Tenet

Moving from the top to number 2 after 4 weeks is the 'saviour of cinema' which quite frankly has struggles over its release so far, even in China.

This weekend the movie took $19.2 Million which brings its 5 week global total to $284.9 while it looks to cross the $300 Million mark which it could do by next weekend.

The Eight Hundred

As the movie starts to open in other territories outside China the movie falls to number 3 with $8.3 Million giving the hit movie a total gross of $441.6 Million.

This new global total means that after 7 weeks of release it is the highest grossing movie globally in 2020, beating out the previous holder Bad Boys For Life.

Greenland

Starring Gerard Butler this movie has had a hard time so far, a couple of moves of release date in the UK and US has meant that the movie will most likely go to VOD in many major markets.

Of the countries it has been released in it has taken $3.3 Million and is this week a re-entry on the global box office at number 4 and after 8 weeks on the chart has taken $17.6 Million.

Mulan

Disney's animated remake has had a hard time of it really, after being days away from a full on cinema release it was pulled because of the pandemic, had its release date moved a couple of time then went to Disney+.

It did get a cinema release in some countries, after complains for many people, and this weekend is at 5 with a weekend gross of $3.3 Million taking its total to $64.4 Million after 5 weeks of release.

As the hunger for Tenet starts to slow down across the globe it remains at the top of the global box office with a narrow lead over the Chinese movie The Eight Hundred which sits at 2.

With a reflection on how movie studios are once again concerned about the release of their films waiting for an audience there is no new films on the top end of the global box office with the highest debut Infidel at 7 with $1.3 Million.

World box office quickview

  • Number 1 - Tenet
  • Highest debut - Infidel
  • Longest run - Onward (28 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - The Eight Hundred ($425,000,000)

Here is a rundown of the global top 5 movies.

Tenet

The buzz is starting to slow down now but Warner Bros. is seeing the movies box office run as a long term thing rather than short term, this weekend the film took $25.4 Million.

The film has now taken $217.2 Million worldwide after 4 weeks of release.

The Eight Hundred

The Chinese movie that has taken nearly half a billion dollars in its native alone has started to get a release across the rest of the world and this week takes $17.7 Million.

Altohugh its not expected the movie will be as successful outside of China it will be one of the top films of the year (because of COVID-19) and so far had a total global gross of $425 Million.

Mulan

With the Disney movie going direct to VOD in much of the world the box office taking have been severely effected, altohugh tepid reviews wont have helped as the movie takes $10.9 Million this week largely from China.

This pushes the movies total global gross to $57 Million, Disney have not given and VOD data for America or Europe so its hard to compare.

In comparison over the last few years the Disney live action remakes have largely grossed over a Billion collars worldwide.

After We Collided

This sleeper hit from director Roger Kumble is at number 4 this weekend with a weekend gross of $3.8 Million giving the movie a $28.5 Million total after 4 weeks of release.

The New Mutants

At number 5 is the Disney mutant movie which has been given such a hard time, taking $3.5 million over the weekend it has a $35 million total after 4 weeks.

Although not really a fair comparison the last X-Men movie X-Men: Dark Phoenix took $252.4 Million worldwide!

Last week saw Tenet remain at the top of the UK box office for a third weekend but can any of this weeks new releases do enough to top the chart this weekend?

Bill & Ted Face the Music

  • The movie is directed by Dean Parisot
  • Dean Parisot also directed Galaxy Quest in 2000 which grossed £3.1 Million in the UK.
  • It stars Keanu Reeves who last starred in Toy Story 4 (2019).
  • The film also stars Alex Winter who last appeared in Electric Boogaloo: The Wild Untold Story Of Cannon Films (2015).

Rocks

  • This new release stars Bukky Bakray who is making a feature film debut
  • It also stars Kosar Ali who is making a feature film debut.
  • The film is brought to us by 4 time director Sarah Gavron.

The Eight Hundred

  • The movie is directed by Hu Guan who directed Design Of Death in 2012.
  • It stars Yi Zhang and Chen Yao who were last seen together in Caught In The Web.

Check back on Monday to see if these new releases enter the UK Weekend Box Office Chart.

Next weeks there is 1 new movie

  • Six Minutes To Midnight - Friday, 25th September
  • Miss Juneteenth - Friday, 25th September

As Tenet opens up in more of the world it easily takes over at the top of the global box office ahead of the Chinese movie The Eight Hundred.

The global box office is still feeling the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the biggest movie to go direct to VOD got a cinema release in some countries and Mulan is the top new movie of the weekend.

Here is a breakdown of the top 5 movies across the globe 4th - 6th September 2020.

Tenet

The Christopher Nolan directed movie gets a release across much more of the world this weekend, including America, and tops the global box office easily with $126 Million.

This pushes the films total global gross to $146.2 Million after 2 weeks of release.

The Eight Hundred

The Chinese hit movie falls to number 2 this week with a gross of $34 Million pushing the films total gross to $336.2 Millon after 4 weeks of release.

The New Mutants

Like Tenet the Mutant movie from 20th Century Fox under the Disney banner got released in more of the world this week and took $12.7 Million globally over the weekend.

This pushes the movie total gross to $20.8 Million after 2 weeks of release.

Mulan

Controversially released onto Disney+ simultaneously with a cinema release the Disney live action remake makes its debut on the global chart at number 3 this weekend with $5.9 Million from 9 countries, but not America.

This movie was to be a tentpole for Disney this year and was pulled from release days before it was set to go global in mid March as the pandemic hit and closed most of the worlds cinemas.

Unhinged

The Russell Crowe starring movie falls to 5 this weekend with $1.9 Million taking its total gross to $23.8 Million after 6 weeks of release.
