News from around the web

Taking the story of the villain from the Batman stories into a different narrative direction the first trailer for Joker has been released.

Directed by Todd Phillips who also brought us The Hangover series of films this re-telling of the villains story stars Joaquin Phoenix as the title character.

The film is released in the UK 4th October 2019 and is one of the more anticipated films of the year.

Check out the new trailer that was shown at CinemaCon below.

A very quiet weekend is seen in the hangover after Thursday Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday and Moana from the Disney studio stays firmly at the top of the US box office while horror movie Incarnate is the only new film landing at 9.

Moana has now taken a total of $119 million in the US with a second weekend take of $28 million, in such a low grossing weekend not a bad take.

The film wont scale the heights of Frozen~2013 but it will be yet another sizeable hit for the Mouse House and it fills the gap while we wait for the next Pixar film.

With the rest of the top 10 more or less staying the same as last weekend the top new film landed right down at number 9 in the shape of Incarnate.

Incarnate took $2.6 million for the weekend and with this showing will most likely fall out of cinemas this week.

This weekend the video game adaptation Warcraft is the top film for the weekend, but Alice Through The Looking Glass is the top film over the week.

Opening on Friday Warcraft took £3.6 million from the 3 days making it the top film over that period.

The Duncan Jones directed film in fact only just made it to the top as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Out of The Shadows was a very close debut at number 2 with £3.4 million.

Alice Through The Looking Glass which debuted at number 2 last week falls to number 4 this week with £1.3 million but over the week Monday - Sunday it grossed £4.7 million, higher than any other film.

Last weeks top film X-Men Apocalypse falls to number 5 this week with £1.2 million for the weekend and £15.8 million in total after 3 weeks.

Longest stay on this weeks chart is Zootopia which has been around for 10 week while the highest total grossing film on the chart is The Jungle Book which has taken £44.5 million over 8 weeks.

Historical charts

A year ago - Spy was the top new film of the week entering at number 1 knocking San Andreas down to number 2.

Five years ago - X-Men First Class was the top new film of the week at number 1 while The Hangover Part II fell to number 2.

Ten years ago - X-Men The Last Stand was still at the top for a second week while the top new film was Poseidon at number 3.

Fifteen years ago - Pearl Harbour entered the box office at the top knocking The mummy Returns into the runner up spot.

Twenty years ago - Toy Story went back to the top of the box office leaving From Dusk Till Dawn to enter the chart in the runner up spot.

Twenty five years ago - Problem Child remained at the top of the box office with Sibling Rivalry to enter highest at number 2.

The US box office sees another tightly fought battle for the number 1 spot this week with Interstellar and Disney's Big Hero 6 challenging for the top spot.

Big Hero 6 wins the fight and takes $56.2 million over the weekend, nowhere near Disney's last animated feature Frozen but still a very good debut and the film has had good generally reviews which should keep it going for a few weeks.

Making its debut in second place is Batman Begins director Christopher Nolan'a new film Interstellar which takes $50 million from its debut weekend of release.

Going down to fourth this week is Ouija, with the hangover from the Halloween weekend keeping it going a little longer but it will probably sink next week with the spooky season well out the way.

There were a trio of big new releases this week and as expected The Fault in Our stars hit the top, the other two didn't perform any where near expectations.

Based on the novel of the same name The Fault in Our Stars is a teenage love story and a tragedy. Directed by Josh Boone who previously directed Stuck in Love from 2003 and starring Shailene Woodley.

Taking £3.4 million from the weekend it knocks 22 Jump Street into the number 2 spot after 2 weeks at the top, Jump Street has taken £12.7 million to date.

Under performing and new at 6 this week is the Clint Eastwood directed Jersey Boys. Taking just £415,608 on it's debut this could be set to be one of Eastwood's worst performing films.

Also not doing as well as expected is Kevin Costner's return to the big screen in 3 Days to Kill. The McG directed film only managed £324,560 over the weekend.

This time last year Man of Steel kept it's place at the top leaving World War Z to debut in the runner up spot.

Five years ago Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen made a debut at the top knocking off The Hangover from it's debut position at the top.

Ten years ago Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban stayed at the top leaving Mean Girls to make it's debut at three with The Day After Tomorrow staying at 2.

Fifteen years ago The Matrix was refusing to shift off the top and the highest new film was Cruel Intentions at three.
