News from around the web

Todd Phillips directed Joked makes its box office debut at the top of the chart as it removes Downton Abbey after a 3 weeke spell while Judy manages a number 2 debut.

Joker

Starring Joaquin Phoenix the new villain movie from the DC Universe hits the top of the box office on its debut with an excellent £12.5 Million weekend.

This meakes the film the 57th top opening film in the UK ever, beating The Inbetweeners 2 and coming in behind The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1.

With such a big opening expect the films gross to be one of DC's better grosses and with good reviews and Oscar potential this movie could run well into next year.

Judy

Renée Zellweger gives what critics are calling an Oscar worthy performance in the bio-pic movie of Judy Garland which opens at number 2 with a very respectable £2 Million.

Again with good reviews and mentions of Oscars this Rupert Goold directed movie could have a very good run in the UK.

Downton Abbey

The British high class movie falls from the top to number 3 on its 4th weekend of release with £1.4 Million giving the film a £23.1 Million total, the film is now the 10th highest grossing of 2019.

Hustlers

The surprise film of the autumn falls to number 4 this weekend with £590,645 but the Lorene Scafaria directed movie had taken £6.1 Million in the UK.

Ad Astra

The Brad Pitt starring space drama falls to number 5 this weekend with £467,983 after 3 weeks of release, but the films £5.5 Million total is very respectable.

The Lion King

The British public can't get enough of Disney's animated remake and this week if the top total grossing movie on the box office with £75 Million, after 12 weeks of release it is still at number 6!

Toy Story 4

Also from Disney is the longest run on this weeks box office as the Pixar film notches up a 16th weekend, the film has taken £65 Million so far.

We still have just under 3 months to go before we reach the end of the year but already the top 6 movies of 2015 have made more than 2014's top movie.

Here is the comparison of 2014's top 6 and 2015's top 6, so far: -

    2014 -
  1. The Lego Movie £34,133,383
  2. Dawn of The Planet of The Apes £33,764,545
  3. The Inbetweeners 2 £33,387,932
  4. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 £29,517,393
  5. The Hobbit: The Battle of The Five Armies £28,759,574
  6. Guardians of The Galaxy £28,536,999
    2015 -
  1. Jurassic World £63,674,773
  2. Avengers Age of Ultron £48,334,257
  3. Minions £46,735,377
  4. Fast and Furious 7 £38,385,021
  5. Inside Out £38,375,834
  6. Fifty Shades of Grey £34,662,255
With still just under 3 month of the year to go we could see the full top 10 of 2015 beating 2014's top film.

The Martian is still doing very well at the UK box office and could reach 2014's The Lego Movies figure, Spectre has just been released and will give 2015's Jurassic World a run for its money.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 is released in a couple of weeks and stands a good chance of making over £35 million.

As if leaving the best to last we have of course Disney/Lucasfilms will release Star Wars: The Force Awakens on December 18th.

An interesting scenario with this film, being released so late in the year much of its gross will come in 2016, but I fully expect it to break various records during its first couple of weeks and it will make over £35 million before the end of the year.

Check back each week to see how these and other new films perform at the UK box office.

All change at the top of the UK box office this week with drama Paper Towns taking over at the top leaving last weeks top film to take a huge tumble.

Paper Town is from the same author as last years hit The Fault in Our Stars which topped the UK box office in June of 2014.

Paper Town hasn't debuted as impressively as the £3 million plus of The Fault in Our Stars with a £2 million debut weekend.

Last weeks top film takes a huge tumble down to 6 this week with an £800,000 second weekend which brings it's total to £4.7 million.

Although Paper Towns is the top film of the weekend once again Inside Out, at number 2, is the top film of the week with a Monday - Sunday total or £3.2 million.

Top grossing film on the box office this week is Minions with a total gross of £44 million over 9 weeks of release.

Historical box office

A year ago - Lucy was on top of the box office on it's debut weekend knocking The Inbetweeners 2 down to 2nd.

Five years ago - The Expendables is the top new film of the week making number 1 while Toy Story 3 falls from the top to number 3.

Ten years ago - Charlie and The Chocolate Factory remained at the top of the box office for another week while the top new film was Bewitched which entered at 2.

Fifteen years ago - The first X-Men movie made its debut at the top knocking Gone In 60 Seconds down to number 3.

Twenty years ago - Die Hard With A Vengeance, the third Die Hard film, was new at the top knocking Waterworld down to number 3.

Twenty five years ago - Another Die Hard film, Die Hard 2 Die Harder was at the top on its debut knocking Days of Thunder into the number 2 spot.

In a mixed up week at the UK box office, using figures including 2 days of previews Adam Sandlers Pixels takes over a the top, the true winner is Inside Out.

If you take away the 2 days of previews Pixar's Inside Out is by far the biggest film of the weekend, and indeed of the week with only a 3% drop from the previous weeks takings.

But lets not take away from the given champion and Pixels duly takes over at the top of the UK box office with a weekend gross of £2.7 million.

After a slamming from critics last weeks top film, Fantastic Four, makes a dramatic fall from the top and lands at number 6 this week with a total gross after 2 weekends of £4.8 million.

The re-image of the superhero franchise simply hasn't worked and the new film will come no-where near the 2005 version which took £12.4 million or it's sequel 4: Rise of The Silver Surfer which took almost the same amount.

Other new film this week include The Man From U.N.C.L.E. at number 4 and Trainwreck, on a limited release, at number 5, Simon Pegg's new film Absolutely Anything enters at number 9.

Historical charts

A year ago - The Inbetweeners 2 continued their run at the top of the box office while The Expendables 3 was new at 3.

Five years ago - Toy Story 3 continued to rule the box office at the top while the critically panned The Last Airbender was new at 3.

Ten years ago - Charlie and The Chocolate Factory was still the top film in the UK while new at 2 was The Island with Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson

Fifteen years ago - Gone In 60 Seconds stayed at the top for another week while, no new entries inside the top 5 so Rules of Engagement entered highest at number 6.

Twenty years ago - Batman Forever gave up the top spot to the much criticised Waterworld starring Kevin Costner and directed by Kevin Reynolds.

Twenty five years ago - Tom Cruise was at the top with Days of Thunder on its debut weekend knocking Total Recall into second place.

New year is time to look back and reflect on what has happened in the past, so here we present the top film lists from the past 12 months.

As you can see from the list below superhero's are still the order of the day at the box office, although in the UK British talent ruled with the Apes coming in a very close second.
