US weekend box office top 5 breakdown 22nd - 24th July 2022

Highest new movie of the weekend

Director Jordan Peele has become one of the big names in horror movies these days, and after the acclaimed Get Out from 2017 and Us~2019 from 2019 a new movie from the director of much anticipated.

His new movie lands at the top of the US box office this weekend with a gross of $44 Million, which is higher than Get Out but less than the $71 Million debut of Us~2019.

After a couple of weekend at the top of the US box office the latest MCU movie falls to number 2 with a weekend gross of $22 Million, a large 53% drop over last weeeknd.

This gives the movie a total US gross of $276 Million after 3 weeks of release, it also makes it the 6 top movie of 2022.

Slipping to number 3 this weekend is the sequel movie to Minions which takes $12.7 Million, a 34% drop over last weekend.

The animated movie which is part of the Despicable Me universe has now taken $297.8 Million in North America and is the 5th top movie of 2022.

Last weekends highest debut falls to number 4 this weekend with $10.3 Million, a 40% drop giving the movie a 2 weekend total gross of $38.3 Million.

Falling to number 5 on its 9th weekend of release is the legacy sequel to the 1986 movie Top Gun which takes $10 Million on its 9th weekend of release.

The movie has performed far beyond anyones expectations and with a total US gross of $635 Million is the top grossing movie of 2022.

The movie has also this weekend gone into the top 10 all time movies in North America where it sits at number 9 having removes Star Wars: The Last Jedi from 2017 out of the top 10 and ever gone as far as grossing movie than 2012's Avengers Assemble (Avengers in the North America).

It's 35 years since Star Wars made it debut in the US, it opened in Manns Chinese Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles (and actually 31 other locations across America), and people queued around the block to see it.

The legacy of the original has been immense and still to this day the Star Wars series of 6 films is one of the highest grossing movie series of all time, behind only Harry Potter and James Bond.

The franchise hit mass criticism and lost some of it's appeal after the 1999 release of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace which was to explain the back story of the popular villain Darth Vader, but all it really did was anger fans because it was frankly quite naff.

The disappointment of the new trilogy of films angered fans more because a few years previously Lucas had messed with the loved original trilogy adding new special effects and scenes, fans preferred the original theatrical release, especially the changed Jaba The Hut scene and the now infamous Gredo shoots first scene.

Despite all this Star Wars is alive and well, and in truth us fans still love the series, the new films got better as the series went on and we all hope and prey for the 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special to be released on Blu-ray some time.
