With the box office chart on hold for the second time due to the lockdown in the UK we take a look at the video charts.

Fox Video's (Disney) film much delayed film from 2020 The New Mutants makes its debut at the top of the box office removing Tenet from a 3 week run at the top.

Also new is the Nicholas Cage action movie Jiu Jitsu which is new this week at number 5.

Here is a breakdown of the video charts week of 10th - 16th January 2021.

The New Mutants

Set in the X-Men universe this Marvel/20th Century Fox/Disney production has a troubled time getting a release date being moved around quite a bit before finally landing a UK release date of 4th September 2020.

It was a relatively big hit in the UK, especially considering cinemas has just re-opened and not to full capacity, but the movie made its debut at number 2 with £686,407 and went on to gross £1.5 Million.

Tenet

The 'saviour of cinema' has spent the last 3 weeks at the top of the video chart but this week gives way to the Mutant movie.

Christopher Nolans mind bending movie took £17 Million in the UK August - September 2020 and is the highest grossing movie of the COVID-19 pandemic era.

The Witches

Robert Zemeckis's adaptation of the classic Roald Dahl book skipped a theatrical release in favour of a direct to VOD release and after 4 weeks falls to number 3 on the video chart.

The Blackout

This sci-fi action movie from Russia jumps from 10 to number 4 this week as the British viewing public look for something new and exciting to watch during a period of time when there are little new releases.

Jiu Jitsu

Starring Nicholas Cage this action movie skipped cinemas in the UK and makes its debut on the video chart at number 5 this week.

The Halloween season hit the box office this weekend and horror movie Come Play makes its debut at the top of the US box office to celebrate.

The only other new release to hit this week box office is right down at number 10 where the movie Spell directed by Mark Tonderai makes its debut.

Here is the US box office Quickview.

  • Number 1 - Come Play (1st week)
  • Highest debut - Come Play (@1)
  • Longest run - The New Mutants (10 weeks) (Not including re-releases)
  • Highest total gross - Tenet ($53,800,000) (Not including re-releases)

Here is a breakdown of the top 5 US box office movies 30th October - 1st November 2020.

Come Play

The top movie over the Halloween period is this horror movie directed by Jacob Chase which on its debut weekend take $3.15 Million.

The new Kevin Coster movie Let Him Go

is getting a release on Friday and getting some hype so it could be a short spell at the top.

Honest Thief

Liam Neeson falls to numer 2 this weekend after a couple of weeks at the top with a weekend gross of $1.35 Million, a 43% drop from last weekend.

The movie has done well at the box office and after 3 weeks of release has taken $9.5 Million.

The War With Grandpa

The Tim Hill directed movie falls one more place to number 3 this weekend with $1.08 Million, 43% down from last weekend.

The movie has a new total gross of $11.2 Million after weeks of release.

The movie has now been on release for 9 weeks and has taken $53.8 Million.

The Empty Man

A new release last weekend the David Prior directed movie falls to number 5 this weekend with $561, a 57% drop from last weekend.

This takes the movie to $2.26 Million after 2 weeks of release.

With cinemas in the US having a hard time with a mixture of closures and re-openings in different states not to mention the lack of big new releases its good to see a new number 1 movie and one starring a big name.

Robert De Niro stars in the kids movie The War With Grandpa which quite easily tops the US box office this weekend pushing Tenet down to the runner up spot.

With no big blockbuster movies hitting cinemas until Christmas there is a chance we could see a lot of yo-yo'ing on the box office iver the coming weeks, and a ot of smaller independent movies doing better than expected.

Here is this weeks US box office Quickview.

  • Number 1 - War With Grandpa (1st Week)
  • Highest debut - War With Grandpa (@1)
  • Longest run - Unhinged (9 weeks)

Here is the US box office top 5 breakdown 9th - 11th October 2020

The War With Grandpa

Director Tim Hill's new movie gets released during a period when there is very little in the way of competition and coupled with its high profile star Robert De Niro the movie takes over at the top with a weekend gross of $3.6 Million.

The movie is squarely aimed at children and time will tell if it has enough for a long run at the top and with Tenet a continuous threat to reclaim the top and a new Liam Neeson action movie out this weekend it could be a short spell.

Tenet

Christopher Nolans mind bending movie falls from the top after 5 weeks with a weekend gross of $2.1 Million this weekend, 22% down from last weekend.

This gives the movie a 6 week total gross of $48.3 Million and is by a wide margin the top movie of recent months despite the fact it is being seen as a flop, but during the current time of closures what is a decent gross.

Hocus Pocus

The 27 year old Halloween favourite drop to number 3 this weekend with $1.1 Million, the movie has now taken $42.6 Million since its release in 1993.

This weekends gross is 40% down from last weeeknd.

Unhinged

Falling to number 5 this weekend is the Russell Crowe starring movie which takes $660K this weekend, 22% down from last weekend, for a very nice $19.3 Million over 9 weeks of release.

The Chinese box office is far outpacing any other country at the moment and can be seen as a model of how to re-open your box office as two movies gross over $150 Million each.

Sequel movie My People, My Homeland and animated feature Legend Of Deification were so far ahead in the weekend takings not nothing else had a look in and the third place movie, Tenet, took a fraction over the same period.

Here is a quick look breakdown of the weeks top 15.

  • Number 1 - My People, My Homeland (1 weeks)
  • Highest debut - My People, My Homeland (@1)
  • Longest run - Onward (30 weeks)

Legend of Deification

Called Jiang Ziya this animated fantasy tale hit the number 2 spot in China on its release being narrowly beaten by My People, My Country, but still the Teng Cheng and Li Wei directed movie took $151.7 Million to debut second globally.
