$4.5 MillionStar Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker makes its UK box office debut at the top of the chart while Cats makes its debut at number 2 despite being panned by critics and movie goers alike.
After 44 years the series of movies that started with Star Wars in 1977 comes to an end, and as with all the other movies in the saga the new films makes its debut at the top, this time with a gross of £14.4 Million.
There is an element of disappointment here as Star Wars: The Last Jedi took £28 Million on its debut and Star Wars: The Force Awakens £34 Million.
This could be because the film has not had good reviews from many critics or it could be because the fans have become a little tired of Star Wars films, this is the 5th movie since Disney bought Lucasfilms.
When George Lucas was making Star Wars movies he released each movie 2 - 3 years apart and each movie felt like an event and the fans were hungry for more, Disney have had a far more agressive release schedule and the sequel trilogy has only taken 4 years to complete.
Unlike the Marvel movies it would seem the Star Wars fans need far longer between movies, saying that this is a good film to finish of the saga and it could well have a long run and make its money in the new year.
The writing was on the wall for this movie after the criticism the first trailer got, and hence the movie makes its debut at number 2 but with a relatively low £3.2 Million.
The sequel movie starring Karen Gillan and Dwayne Johnson falls to number 3 this week, after making its debut at the top last week, with £2.9 Million.
This gives the movie a 2 week total of £14.7 Million which is a couple of million lower than its predecessor.
Disney's sequel movie drops to number 4 this weekend with a gross of £2.2 Million.
This gives the film a total gross of £41.7 Million after 5 weeks of release which is over £10 Million higher that its predecessor.
The festive movie has proved to be a bigger films in the UK than many other parts of the world and while it falls to number 5 this weekend with £803,948 it has still taken a quite respectable £16.9 Million over 6 weeks.
The mega smash hit DC superhero villain movie climbs back onto the box office this weekend spending its 11th in total and has now taken £57.9 Million.
Dwayne Johnson seems to be the biggest star on the planet at the moment and today he introduces the trailer for his upcoming movie Jungle Cruise.
The film also stars Emily Blunt and it is inspired by the ride at the Disneyland theme park where a boat takes a group of travelers on a boat trip down a river in the Amazon jungle where supernatural things start to happen.
The Pirates Of The Caribbean films were also based on a ride at Disneyland and those films took over a Billion each at the box office, although Tomorrowland was based on an area in Disneyland and that film bombed so the writing is on the wall for how this film will do.
The first trailer looks promising and although you get feelings of Johnsons own Jumanji as well as the 1999 film The Mummy there is enough here to get us excited.
The film is out on 24th of July 2020 so we will have to enjoy the ride until then, you can check out the trailer below.
Of all the TV manufacturers that sell sets in the UK Samsung sold more than any other in 2009, in fact they have a very impressive 23% of the TV marker above the likes of Panasonic and Sony.
Is this any surprise? Probably not, they make good quality, very good looking TV's, and they always sit very prominently in showrooms, and look better than many of the others.
I'd argue that Pioneer, Panasonic and maybe even Sony make better sets, but they are not as good looking as the Samsung sets.
2010 will be an interesting to watch as there are 2 major advancements in TV technology on the way, first and probably more important is OLED which allows for ultra thin TV's with fantastic picture quality and low energy use. The other is 3D TV which is a matter of opinion, I personally don't see it catching on, but if this years CES show was anything to go by, it'll hit big this year.
I personally hope we get larger screens, my 42 inch is great but a nice 60 inch that I can easily mount onto the wall with a wireless connection built in that I can get full 1080p streaming video on would be nice.
To coin a phrase from a much loved movie, 'There Can Be Only One', this was true back in the midsts of time when Betamax had a fight with VHS and the same is true now, but unlike back then it looks like the better format this time has won.
So what's all this about, it's about the next generation DVD high definition format wars that has been taking place over the last year or so, two competing camps headed by Sony and Toshiba have been trying to bring a high definition successor to the DVD to market and both have been rallying to get the support of the studios to release their films on the two formats.
The various studios have been one by one taking sides, Sony of course have a large catalogue of film, from themselves and their buy out of Columbia pictures, also with large catalogues are Disney (along with Buena Vista) who have taken the Blu-Ray route and Paramount and Universal. Paramount and Universal pledged their support for HD-DVD back last year to much controversy and large amounts of money allegedly changing hands.
Warner have been on the fence about this and have been releasing films on both HD-DVD and Blu-ray, until now, Warner have now announced that they are to go Blu-ray exclusive on all their films, starting in May.
Clearly this has sent a huge shudder through the HD-DVD ranks as Paramount/Universal are now the only major studio to be backing HD-DVD, and my money is on them making a u-turn sometime this year.
To add salt to the wound New Line have also announced their allegiance to Blue-ray which means that a certain fantasy trilogy by Peter Jackson* won't be long before it's making it's way to high-def.
In figures just released Blu-ray is now outselling HD-DVD by 70% so the writing was on the wall before Warner made the announcement and in truth they have just made a good business decision to go with the stronger format.
This looks to have resolved the format was once and for all, this time next year HD-DVD should be a thing of the past and go in the Betamax hall of fame.
