News from around the web

A new Pixar film is always something to watch closely on the box office and this week with the release of Onward the movie hits the top of the US box office but the figures are lower than expect, while The Way Back starring Ben Affleck also gets a high new entry in the top 5.

Onward

With the current spread of the Coronavirus hitting the US the box office was overall lower than it could have been, and despite getting good reviews the new Disney/Pixar movie hit the top with $40 Million over the weekend.

This is certainly on the lower end of a Pixar movie, but those who travel to a movie theatre enjoyed the movie.

Looking forward the road might be tough and the film could end up with a smaller gross despite the movies popularity.

The Invisible Man

As expected the Universal modern monster movie fell to number 2 this week with $15.1 Million over the weekend.

This brings the films total US gross to $52.6 Million after 2 weeks of release.

The Way Back

Landing as number 3 this weekend is the new film starring Ben Affleck and directed by Gavin O'Connor which grosses $8.5 Million over its debut.

Sonic the Hedgehog

Falling to number 4 after 4 weeks of release is the video game adaptation which takes $8 Million taking its total to a very good $140.8 Million.

The Call of the Wild

Harrison Ford stars in the movie at number 5 with a weekend gross of $7 Million taking the films total gross ot $57.4 Million after 3 weeks of release.

Parasite

The Oscar winning film spends its 21st weekend on the box office making it the film with the longest run, its total gross is $52.8 Million.

Jumanji: The Next Level

The film with the highest total gross this week sits at number 12 with $315.8 Million after 13 weeks.

Pixar hit the top of the global box office once again with their new movie Onward which knocks The Invisible Man off the top meaning it spends just a week at the summit, meanwhile The Way Back with Ben Affleck makes a new entry at 5.

Onward

Pixar bring to the world a brand new story in the shape of this fantasy tale of two brothers looking to bring their father back for 24 hours.

The movie takes a very respectable $68 Million globally on its debut from 48 countries, this is no Toy Story but the Pixar name has brought in a good audience.

Also worth taking into to consideration is the global threat of the coronavirus which is keeping people away from movie theatres across the globe.

The Invisible Man

Falling from the top after a single week is the monster movie starring Elisabeth Moss which takes $35.4 Million from 66 countries.

This pushes the movies total gross to $98.2 Million, it will go over $100 Million in the next few days.

Sonic the Hedgehog

The video game adaptation starring Jim Carrey falls a single place to number 3 this week with $20 Million from 63 countries to bring its total to $295.6 Million, it could go over $300 Million before next weekend.

The Call of the Wild

The Harrison Ford starring movie falls to number 4 this week with $11.8 Million from 48 countries giving it a $99.5 Million total, it should get to $100 Million in the next day or so.

The Way Back

Finally on the top 5 is this new release starring Ben Affleck which lands at 5 with $9.1 Million from 15 countries.

Jack Black scores the first top film of the year in the re-telling of the giant movie Gulliver's travels.

Supported by a cast of many British actors including the likes of Billy Connelly, Catherine Tate and James Cordon, the giant movie takes in an excellent £7,028,747 over the New Year period, no doubt helped by the mega press that Jack Black and other members of the cast have done on British TV.

Black has had a mixed bag of success in the UK with his last film, Year One, bombing with £2,776,236, but then he's had hits like King Kong which took £26,080,026 in the UK, so Gulliver's Travels will rank among his higher grossing movies.

Falling to second this week is The Little Fockers with £2,614,802 bringing it to £11,159,635 over a ten day period.

New at 3 is Jake Gyllenhaal in a film directed by Edward Zwick, Love and Other Drugs takes £1,606,253 over the weekend.

New at 4 Peter Weir directs Colin Farrell and Jim Sturgess in The Way Back to the tune of £1,327,650 and falling And finally in the top 5 falling is The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of The Dawn Treader which takes £1,207,264 which brings it total gross now to £11,263,418 which is the lowest of all the Narnia films. This week the top 7 films all took over a million pound each in box office takings, very good compared to last week when only the top film took over a million, and better than last year when only the top 4 took over a million.
