News from around the web

We all know there are no new big blockbusters coming out at the moment, and Tenet is still at the top for a 6th weekend, but comparing this to the amazing 6 week number 1 run of Joker from 2019 is unfair.

I suspect Tenet would not have been a 6 weeks number 1 under normal circumstances, 2 maybe 3 at the most, and although the total gross in the UK would have been in the £10 of million it would not have had the press the movie got.

Still we are where we are and its till the top film in the UK, and Cats & Dogs: Paws Unite! is the top new film at number 2!

Here is a quick look breakdown of this week top 15 box office.

  • Number 1 - Tenet (6 weeks)
  • Highest debut - Cats & Dogs: Paws Unite! (@2)
  • Longest run - Onward (17 weeks)
  • Highest total gross = Tenet (£15,948,191)

Here is a breakdown of the top 5 movies in the UK 2nd - 4th October 2020.

Tenet

The Christopher Nolan directed movie is now 6 weeks at number 1 equalling the runs of The World Is Not Enough (1999) and Joker (2019), it takes just £628.2K this weekend which is only 3% down from last weekend.

This puts the movies total gross at £15.9 Million after 6 weeks, and as expected it is the top grossing movie since cinemas re-opened and the 6th highest of 2020 overtaking Dolittle.

Cats & Dogs: Paws Unite!

Top new movies of the weekend is the third film in the Cats & Dogs series which takes £456.5K on its debut.

This is a movie very much aimed at children, can we expect a massive drop next weekend or will the current climate keep it in the top 5?

After We Collided

After a fantastic start to its box office run the Roger Kumble directed teen drama falls to number 3 this weekend with £390.2K, a drop of 24% from last weekend.

The movie has now taken quite an amazing £3.1 Million after 5 weeks of release.

The movie has now entered the top 20 movies for 2020 at number 20 and with its current pace at the box office could go higher.

Bill & Ted Face the Music

The third Bill & Ted movie has had a hard time with its box office takings, but it does spend a third weekend on the chart this weekend with a gross of £146.5K, although this is a 32% drop from last weekend.

This gives the movie a 3 week total of just over £1 Million, not bad for a movie which can onto VOD day and date with cinema.

The Elfkins

Both new releases in the top 5 this weekend were children's film and this Ute von Munchow-Pohl directed movie lands at 5 with £131.3K on its debut.

Like it's predecessor Taken 3, or Tak3n as it's known, debuts at the top of the box office on it's debut week of release.

Tak3n's debut in the UK makes an excellent £6.7 on it's debut weekend, it's predecessor, Taken 2, took £7.3 million on it's debut while Taken, a sleeper hit, took £1.1 million.

Tak3n knocks last week top film, The theory of Everything down to number 3 this week, the Stephen Hawkins bio-pic has now taken nearly £8 million.

Entering at 2 is Disney's latest film Into The Woods while The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies and Paddington finish of the top 5.

Historical box office

A year ago - 12 Years A Slave was the debut top film of the week among major Oscar buzz, it knocked American Hustle down to number 2.

Five years ago - Avatar spent yet another week at the top of the box office while the top new film of the week was Daybreakers at number 3.

Ten years ago - White Noise made it's debut at the top of the box office knocking The Incredibles from the top to number 4.

Fifteen years ago - Tim Burtons Sleepy Hollow made it's debut at the top of the box office, it finally knocked long running number 1 film The World Is Not Enough off the top spot, it was at number 2.

After a trio of weeks at the top of the box office The Hobbits have made way for the Oscar tipped Stephen Hawking bio-pic The Theory Of Everything.

The film had previews in the last week which pushed it to the top of the tree, had it not had those previews it would have stalled at number 2 and not debuted at the top, instead it makes it way to number 1 with £3.7 million.

Falling just the one place this week is The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies which only narrowly missed out on a fourth week at the top with a £3.2 million start to the year.

Sitting comfortably at number 2 the third and final Hobbit movie has so far racked up £36.7 million in the UK, and looks likely to beat Smaugs UK total.

Also new this week are - The Woman In Black Angel of Death at 4 - Birdman at 7

Historical charts

A year ago - After entering lower down the chart with preview screenings American Husle moves to the top of the box office knocking The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug down to number 2, Last Vegas was the highest new film at 4.

Five years ago - After giving up the top spot for a couple of weeks Avatar makes its way back to the top knocking Alvin and The Chipmunks The Squeakquel down to 3, Did You Hear About The Morgans? was the highest new film at 4.

Fifteen years ago - There was no stopping The World Is Not Enough as it spent another week at the top of the box office, very little in the way of new releases meant that Fantasia 2000 was the highest new film right down at 13, and on limited release!

Twenty years of in the Month of January Interview With The Vampire was the big film with again with Star Trek Generations making an impress debut run at number 2.

Twenty five years ago Parenthood was the top film for January while When Harry Met Sally was the big new film for the month at number 2.

The festive period of 2014 has arrived and like each year where we have had a Middle Earth film, The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies is the top film for the week.

A weekend gross of £4.2 million has pushed it's total gross to £28.8 million for it's UK run.

Highest new film of the week the Ridley Scott directed Exodus Gods and Kings, entering the box office chart at number 2 with a £2.6 million take.

Not a bad opening gross but a long way off some of Scotts other films, his highest of which is Hannibal which took £6.4 on it's debut weekend.

Other new films this week are Annie at 4 and Unbroken at 7.

Historical charts

One year ago - Last year The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug was still holding the top slot while The Secret Life of Walter Mitty was the highest new film at 4.

No change at the top this week with The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies staying for it's second week of release, it's weekend gross of £5.4 million is down 55.6% on last weeks.

The latest, and last, film in the series is running at the same rate of gross as the previous film, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, but behind The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

Paddington stays at two this week and highest new film is in at three, Night At The Museum: Secret of the Tomb, grossing this week £1.8 million.
