News from around the web

There were two new big entries on the box office this week and the 2016 reboot of Ghostbusters was the highest of them.

Directed by Paul Feig and starring Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig the new take on the classic 1984 film tops the UK box office with £4.3 million.

The original movie took a total of £12 million in the UK and time will tell if this will climb to those height.

The Secret Life of Pets falls to number 3 after 3 weeks at the top with a weekend gross of £2 million gross which brings the films total gross to £25.7 million.

The Secret Life of Pets is also the highest total grossing film on this weeks box office.

Also new this week at number 2 is the 5th in the Ice Age series Ice Age Collision Course, its debut gross is £3.7 million.

Twenty five years ago Thelma and Louise made its debut at the top knocking off The Naked Gun 2 The Smell of Fear after a couple of weeks at the top.

A mixed bag on the UK box office this week, Monday - Friday saw The Secret Life of pets tops the charts but Absolutely Fabulous was the top film from Monday to Sunday and The legend of Tarzan is the highest new film.

The Life of Pets makes it three weeks at the top with a £3.6 million gross over the weekend, this brings the films total gross to £22.6 million.

Absolutely Fabulous The Movie, not on its second week takes £5.7 million over the whole week, just slightly better that Pets, clearly showing when the 2 different audiences go to the cinema.

Highest debut this week lands at number 2 this week in the shape of a new take on the Tarzan story, The Legend of Tarzan, the film grosses £3.5 million.

Also new this week: Now You See Me 2 lands at number 3, Indian film Sultan has the best debut ever for an Indian film at number 6 with just over a million pound and The Neon Demon lands at 9.

Highest total grossing movie on the box office if The Secret Life of Pets and the longest run on the chart is Me Before You now on 6 weeks.

Historical chart

Despite competition from the British beloved comedy that is Ab Fab, The Life of Pets remains at the top of the UK box office for a second weekend.

In its second weekend The Life of Pets takes a gross of £4.7 million, this brings the films total gross to an very good £16.6 million after 2 weeks, the films weekly gross is over £7 million.

Highest new entry of the week in Absolutely Fabulous The Move which makes its debut at number 2, a weekend gross of £4.02 million.

The film version of the British comedy comes nearly 25 years after the TV series started on BBC and amazingly it still has all the original cast including leads Joanna Lumley and Jennifer Saunders.

A good run should be in order for the film although as is often the case with TV to movie adaptation it will probably spend a lot of time in cinemas but out of the charts.

Also new this week is Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart in Central Intelligence which is new at 3.

Highest total grossing and longest running movie on the box office this week once again is The Jungle Book which over 12 weeks has grossed £47 million.

Historical charts

A years ago - The Minions remained at the top of the box office while highest new film was Terminator Genisys at number 2.

Five years ago - Transformers: Dark of The Moon is the highest new film at the top of the box office while falling to number 2 is Bridesmaids.

Twenty five years ago - The Naked Gun 2 The Smell of Fear makes its box office debut at the top knocking Silence of The Lambs down to number 2.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 simply did big business across the world in 2011 taking an incredible $1,327,655,619 in world wide box office takings.

The final instalment of the Harry Potter franchise made sure that no other franchise will come close to it for a while and it was the only film in the saga to break the billion pound mark in world grosses, although the 3D tax will have helped.

Coming in a healthy second is Transformers: Dark of the Moon which took $1,114,558,779, this is also the highest grossing film it's series, although to date there are only 3, more will follow. With Transformers taking over a billion it completed a top 10 of world box office films with over a billion.

Also worth a mention are Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides with just over a billion dollars, Kung Fu Panda with $659,230,261 and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 with $648,079,401.

It was not a great year for film at the box office this year despite the high taking of 3 films, they were exceptions. Next year is a good year for films and could well see box office takings increase with the likes of Batman, Spider-Man and The Hobbit.
