News from around the web

As expected the movie version of Mrs. Browns Boys took the top spot at the UK box office, and with quite a strong margin over the rest.

On it's debut weekend Mrs. Brown's Boys D'Movie took an incredible £4.3 million, far higher than expected and proving that the Irish sit-com has quite a following.

I suspect that this is a fairly front loaded event and we could see it fall quite sharply, I dont think it has the lasting appeal of movie like The Inbetweeners Movie.

Falling to the runner up spot this week is The Fault in our stars which made £1.7 million from the weekend bringing it's 10 day gross to £6.7 million.

Other new film to chart this week are: - Chef at 5 - How to Train Your Drans 2 (still only on previews) at 6 - Walking on Sunshine at 7 - Cold in July at 11 - Ek Villain at 12 - Punjab 1984 at 13

This time last year Despicable Me 2 hit the top of the box office on it's debut week of release, it would go on to be the top film in the UK of 2013, it knocked Man of Steel into 2nd place.

Five years ago Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen was still the top film in the UK and Year One with Jack Black was the highest new film at 3.

Ten years ago it was still Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban at the top while the top new film of the week was Tom Hanks on Lady Killers at 4.

Fifteen years ago Brendan Fraser made a big screen comeback in The Mummy which debuted at the top of the box office knocking The Matrix into the runner up spot after only a week.

There were a trio of big new releases this week and as expected The Fault in Our stars hit the top, the other two didn't perform any where near expectations.

Based on the novel of the same name The Fault in Our Stars is a teenage love story and a tragedy. Directed by Josh Boone who previously directed Stuck in Love from 2003 and starring Shailene Woodley.

Taking £3.4 million from the weekend it knocks 22 Jump Street into the number 2 spot after 2 weeks at the top, Jump Street has taken £12.7 million to date.

Under performing and new at 6 this week is the Clint Eastwood directed Jersey Boys. Taking just £415,608 on it's debut this could be set to be one of Eastwood's worst performing films.

Also not doing as well as expected is Kevin Costner's return to the big screen in 3 Days to Kill. The McG directed film only managed £324,560 over the weekend.

This time last year Man of Steel kept it's place at the top leaving World War Z to debut in the runner up spot.

Five years ago Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen made a debut at the top knocking off The Hangover from it's debut position at the top.

Ten years ago Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban stayed at the top leaving Mean Girls to make it's debut at three with The Day After Tomorrow staying at 2.

Fifteen years ago The Matrix was refusing to shift off the top and the highest new film was Cruel Intentions at three.

It was the big night on Sunday for the Oscars, which meant it was the big night for the Razzies on Saturday, the two ceremonies that celebrate the two end of the scale for the film industry, and in a first for the industry Sandra Bullock received one of each.

On Saturday night Sandra Bullock was announced as the worst actress of the year for her role in All About Steve, and she had the dignity to be at the ceremony to get the award, and then on Sunday night she was announced as bet actress for her role in The Blind Side, and she was there to get the Oscar.

The big winner for the Razzies though was Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen which took awards for worst film and worst director, and quite predictable Michael Bay was not there to get the award.

The next night, and of course the one which everyone talks about, Katherine Bigalo beat her ex-husband and scooped the best film and best director, and unbelievable is the first woman to pick up such an award.

On the Oscar front Jeff Bridges also got an award for his role in Crazy Heart while Christoph Waltz and Mo'Nique won supporting Oscars for Inglourious Basterds and Precious.

In all the weekend was a predictable night for awards and makes you wonder if the whole awards things is getting a little boring?

As may have expected, Warner Bros's Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince is the top grossing movie of 2009 across the world in box office recipts.

The sixth Harry Potter movie topped out at $925,948,049 (£573,244,896) in world grosses, which also makes it the 8th highest grossing film of all time right behind Order of the Phoenix.

Behind Potter was the computer animated film Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs which took $882,673,705 (£546,263,204) with Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen coming in 3rd with $832,076,689 (£514,953,924).

Disaster movie 2012 did well coming in 4th with $745,190,680 (£461,182,780) and finalising the top 5 for the year was the continuing saga of Twilight, New Moon, with $671,228,000 (£415,363,712).

Also making strong appearances for the year are animated tale Up, Angels and Demons and most surprising of all The Hangover.

James Camerons Avatar is doing big business at the tail end of 2009 and will no doubt be a top earner of films released in 2009, but much of its takings will be in 2010.
