Synopsis for The Boys In the Boat

Avatar this week has become the top grossing movie released globally in 2022, it is yet to be the top grossing movie of 2022 in North America and Canada or the UK.

The James Cameron directed sequel to Avatar has taken over $1.5 Billion at the global box office, with China, Japan, Europe and Australia showing good figures for the movie.

In the UK the top grossing movie of 2022 is Top Gun: Maverick which took an amazing £83.5 Million during its summer run, the Avatar sequel still has a bit to go to catch up.

In North America and Canada the Top Gun sequel took $717 Million on its 24 week run, and with Avatar: The Way of Water still pulling in good numbers, and an increase in screen this weekend couples with little competition until Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania in mid February its looking likely the movie will go ahead.

It was an interesting year at the box office in 2022, there were some big disappointments, but its looks like there were 3 Billion dollar movies as well as a couple which got close.

One of those movie will most likely go over the $2 Billion mark, the first time that has happened since Avengers: Endgame in 2019 (pre-pandemic), although Spider-Man: No Way Home came very close in 2021.

As Black Adam spends a second weekend at the top of the UK box office the top new movie of the weekend comes in at number 4 with horror movie Prey For the Devil to celebrate the halloween season.

Also new inside the top 5 is the event movie Coldplay Music of the Spheres Live Broadcast From Buenos Aires while outside the top 5 a 20th anniversary release of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is new at 7 with £454,250.

American hit movie Barbarian~2022 makes a disappointing entry at 8 with £380,812, also Triangle of Sadness is new at 10 with £308,950 and surprisingly celebrated LGBQ comedy BROS is new at 11 with £215,612.

UK weekend box office top 5 breakdown 28th - 30th October 2022

A second weekend at the top for the DC super hero movie starring Dwayne Johnson which takes £3.4 Million, a reasonable 38% drop over last weekend.

In comparison Shazam! from 2019 took £2.1 Million on its second weekend which was also a new unknown IP for Warner Bros., although it didn't have the big star name attached.

The movie has taken £13.4 Million in the UK after its 2 weeks (10 days) of release.

Jumping back up the chart to number 2 this weekend of the children's book adaptation which takes £1.4 Million, an incredible 4% increase over last weekend.

This gives the movie a totak UK gross of £9 Million after 3 weeks of release.

Falling to number 3 this weekend after making its debut at number 2 is the Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson friendship drama which takes £1.2 Million, a 23% drop over its debut.

This gives the Irish drama/comedy a total gross of £4.2 Million in the United Kingdom after 2 weeks of release.

Highest new movie this weekend

Highest new movie of the weekend celebrates the Halloween season as the horror movies directed by Daniel Stamm makes its debut at number 4.

The season peaked early this year with Smile~2022 and Halloween Ends having already made their mark on the box office and this movie makes its debut with £859,717.

Interestingly with halloween on a Monday this year both Smile~2022 and Halloween Ends suffered significant drop this weekend and couldn't capitalise on the season.

Event movies have become a staple of the box office in recent years and for those unable to get to the event Coldplay broadcast their latest concert in theatres starting on Thursday of last week.

Over the weekend the concert pulled in a total gross of £745,541 with repeat showings bound to push it over the Million mark in the coming weeks.

Chinese movie Home Coming

hits the top of the global box office in another quiet weekend with the Hollywood movie Smile~2022 coming in behind it at number 2.

Further down the chart Indian movie Ponniyin Selvan: I is new at number 7 with $8.7 Million, Ordinary Hero is also new at number 8 with $8.4 Million while Hollywood movie BROS is new at 9 with $4.8 Million.

Outside the top 10 there is a new release at number 12 with Honest Candidate 2 which takes $2.7 Million on its debut.

Released in China to celebrate China's National Day holiday weekend the movie about two members of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs tasked with getting people out after was breaks out with Libya in 2011.

the movie makes its debut with a gross of $59.5 Million from its single terretory of release.

A new horror movie from director Parker Finn is the new movie at number 2 this weekend as it gets a release in a large 59 countries.

The movie has a global debut of $36.5 Million which includes territories like United Kingdom and Untied States.

The re-release of the highest grossing global movie of all time drops to number 2 this weekend after making a debut at the top.

The re-release takes $16.9 Million, from 52 territories, on its second weekend, a drop of 44%, and a take of $58 Million for this release, the movie of very close to an all time of $3 Billion and if it ever does cross that milestone it will be the first movie to ever achieve this.

Director Olivia Wildes troubled movie falls to number 4 this weekend with a gross fo $13.7 Million, from 64 territories, a large 54% drop over last weekend.

The movie has taken $54.7 Million over its 2 weeks of release.

George Clooney and Julie Roberts latest star vehicle drops to number 5 this weekend after 4 weeks on the chart with $9.4 Million from 59 countries.

The movie drop a small 15% this weekend for a total global gross of $45 Million, the movie has been a bigger hit than anyone probably thought, including the studio.

James Bond retakes the top of the UK box office as No Time To Die and Dune have a photo finish with with only £200,000 separating them at the finish line.

Top new movie of the weekend is Last Night In Soho which enters at number 8 this week with £731,950, although the highest debut of the week is Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone which is re-released to celebrate 20 years since its release, it makes its debut at 6 with £965,007.

Also new this weekend are Antlers at number 11 with £251,100 and My Hero Academia: World Heroes' Mission at number 12 with &pond;218,956 while Cliff Richard - The Great 80 Tour which hit cinemas on Wednesday was at number 13 for the weekend with £157,345.

United Kingdom box office top 5 box office breakdown weekend 29th - 31st October 2021

No Time To Die

Far and away the biggest hit of 2021 (so far) goes back to the top of the UK box office in a very tight battle with Dune with the Bond movie winning the race by just £202,149.

Daniel Craigs final Bond outing takes £3.5 Million over the weekend, a very slim 25% drop over last weekend when it fell to number 2.

This gives the movie a total UK gross of £85.9 Million over its 5 weeks of release, this also makes it the top movie of 2021 and the 5th top movie ever in the UK.

Unlike Tenet last year, which was released too early, the Bond movie, which has a bigger appeal anyway, has got people to go back to cinemas, and for the 5th weekend running the box office top 15 has grossed over £15 Million, something which hasn't happened since the end of 2019 start of 2020 when Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was released.

Also the movie has broken the record to most consecutive days grossing over £1 Million, it currently stands at 33 days.

Dune

Director Denis Villeneuve's take on the classic sci-fi movie falls to number 2 this weekend with £3.3 Million, this gives it a very good 44% drop on its second weekend of release.

This gives the movie a total gross of £13.2 Million and it pushes it into the top 10 movies of 2021 at number 9.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage

Staying put at number 3 this weekend is the Spiderverse villain movie which takes £1,5 Million on its 3rd weekend, a good 39% drop over last week, giving the movie a total UK gross of £14.7 Million and the 7th top movie of 2021.

The Addams Family 2

The animated sequel goes back up to number 4 this weekend with a take of £1.4 Million, and increase of 40% over last weekend, largely due to the school autumn half term.

This gives the movie a total gross of £8.9 Million over 4 weeks of release.

The Boss Baby 2: Family Business

Also benefitting from the school half term in another animated sequel which takes £1.3 Million over the weekend as the movie falls to number 5, this is an 11% increase from last weekend, this movie has taken £4.9 Million after 2 weeks of release.
