US weekend box office top 5 breakdown 21st - 23rd October 2022

Highest new movie this weekend

Starring Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson the latest superhero to get unleashed onto the big screen makes its debut at the top of the North American box office.

Taking a reasonable $67 Million on its debut this is fairly good for a DC/Warner Bros. movie but this set od superheros can't match that of their Marvel rivals.

The movie has a clear road for the next few weeks until Disney release the Black Panther sequel in early November.

In an unusual movie the new George Clooney and Julia Roberts movie gets a release weeks behind the rest of the world, and it goes up against Black Adam, a very strange situation!

The movie has been a surprise hit globally having taken close to $100 Million, and it makes its debut in North America with $16 Million, no where near the number 1 movie but not bad.

Despite the movie seeming like an Adam sandler and Drew Barrymore reject it seems to be wowing audience and could potentially fulfil the need for people looking for a non special effects laden end of the year.

The horror movie of the season falls to number 3 this weekend with $8.3 Million as it suffers a slight pre halloween slump, this is 34% down on last week.

The movie has taken $84 Million in total over its 4 weeks of release, it could see a climb next weekend over the Halloween period and $100 Million would not be unreachable.

The last of the last trilogy of Halloween movies falls to number 4 this weekend after making its debut at the top with a gross of $8 Million, a very large 80% drop.

Bear in mind the it got a simultaneous cinema and streaming release, the movie has taken $54.1 Million to date, this is lower than either of the other 2 movies.

It may get a boost next weekend and then it will slip away quietly until the next reboot of the franchise!

The children's book adaptation falls to number 5 this weekend with $4.2 Million a 43% drop on its 3th weekend of release giving it a total North American gross of $28 Million.

Marvel unleashed their new movie and character to the MCU this weekend with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings which not only opened at the top of the US box office but also got the top opening Labour Day weekend gross.

The Anticipation for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was so high that no other film opened at the US box office this weekend.

US box office QuickView

  • Number 1 - Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (1st weekend)
  • Highest debut - Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (@1)
  • Longest run - Black Widow (9 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - Black Widow ($182.5 Mil)

US box office top 5 breakdown weekend 3rd - 5th September 2021.

Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

Considering the world is still in the grips of a global pandemic and people are still nervious about going back to the cinema for a movie to get the best opening Labour Day weekend ever is quite comething, but the new movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has done just that.

The second movie in the MCU phase 4 series of movies opened to $71.4 Million, which is not as high as Black Widow's $80 Million but it is the second highest of the pandemic era.

Black Widow dropped quite fast and seemed to get upfront audience of people wanting to see the movie, good word of mouth with drive this movie forward and with a slow upcoming calendar of releases we could see this movie's gross climb to the highest of the year.

The movie has already broken into the top 10 movies of 2021 and after its debut release is number 9.
