UK weekend box office top 5 breakdown 29th - 31st July 2022

Highest new movie of the weekend

Making its debut at the top of the UK box office this weekend is a movie inspired by the characters in the DC Universe of Super-heroes and their Super-Pets!

The movie stars the voise talents of Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Heart and it takes £2.6 Million on its debut weekend.

Falling to number 2 this weekend after taking the top spot for a second time is the Minions sequel movie which on its 5th weekend of release takes £1.9 Million, a 35% drop.

The movie has now taken a total of £33.5 Million in the UK which is just behind the original movie which had taken £37 Million in 2015.

The movie is also the 6th biggest film of 2022 to date.

The latest in the MCU movies falls to number 3 this weekend with £1,9 Million, a 37% drop over last weekend.

The fourth in the Thor series has now taken £30 Million at the UK box office after 4 weeks of release, it is currently ahead of 2017's Thor: Ragnarok which had taken £28 Million at this stage in its run.

The movie is currently the 7th top movie of 2022.

The Elvis Presley bio-pic from director Baz Luhrmann remains at number 4 this weekend with £1.1 Million on its 6th weekend, a very slim 11% drop over last week.

This gives the movie a total UK gross of £20.8 Million making it the directors top grossing movie in the UK.

The incredible run of the Top Gun sequel has been unprecedented for a movie that was release over 30 years after the original, and it has found a new generation of fans and the studio must be looking at doing another movie, perhaps without Tom Cruise!

The movie has this weekend taken £981,129, a very slim 10% drop over last weekend which takes the movies total in the UK to £76 Million.

It is the top grossing movie of 2022, where it might remain if Avatar: Way of the Water doesn't spoil the party in December.

The movie is also now the 9th top grossing movie ever in the UK having taken over the 2019 version of The LIon King~2019 with an eye to go even higher on the list.

Comparing it to the original movie from 1986 is hard considering the gap in releases, but if adjust for inflation the £1.88 average price of a ticket in 1986 then the original would have taken about £49 Million at this stage in its run.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore goes ultra wide this weekend in 67 countries and climbs to the top of the global box office on its second weekend of release.

Highest new movie of the weekend is the Indian movie K.G.F: Chapter 2 which lands at number 2 while Father Stu starring Mark Whalberg is new at number 9 with $5.7 Million from its single country release of North America.

World box office top 5 weekend breakdown 15th - 18th April 2022

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore

The third in the Fantastic Bests series climbs up the global box office from its debut position last weekend at number 2 to the top this week with a country count that has expanded to 67, including North America.

The movie takes $114 Million on its second weekend which gives the film a total global gross of $193.4 Million, a 49% increase, a worrying 2 week gross for the troubled Wizarding World series.

The movie is the 9th top film of 2022 so far, but with the mixed critical reviews and tepid word of mouth this could be the first 'flop' for the series.

K.G.F: Chapter 2

A sequel to the 2019 movie K.G.F: Chapter 1 which took $6 Million globally gets released in 19 countries this week and lands on the global box office at number 2 making it the highest new movie.

Taking an incredible $72.3 Million on its debut this is the second Indian movie to gain global success in recent weeks.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2

Falling from the top to number 3 this weekend is the video game sequel movie which takes $55 Million from 55 countries, a 49% drop over last weekend.

This gives the movie a total global gross of $231.8 Million after 3 weeks of release and its the 7th top movie of 2022.

The Lost City

The action comedy starring Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum climbs back up to number 4 from last weeks 6 this weekend with a gross of $16.6 Million from 34 countries, a 32% increase over last weekend.

The movie has taken $98.9 Million over 4 weeks of release and should cross the $100 Million milestone by next weekend.

Morbius

Sony's Spiderverse villain movie falls to number 5 on its 3rd weekend of release with $11.4 Million from 63 countries, a 55% drop, giving the movie a total global gross of $146.4 Million over its release.

UK box office top 5 weekend breakdown 8th - 10th April 2022

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore

This third in the series of movies that serve as a prequel to the Harry Potter movies, starring Eddie Redmayne as the Beasts finder Newt Scamander the series has turned into an origins movie for Albus Dumbledore played in this series by Jude law.

The movie opens with a gross of £5.8 Million which is well below the last movie in the series Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald with an opening of £12 Million and the first movie in the series Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them which took £15 Million on its opening.

This series of movies has not touched the heights of the Harry Potter series which started 20 years ago with Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone which took £15 Million on its debut and ended with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 which took £23 Million.

The movie is the 10th top movie of the year so far, and will end up most likely in the top 5, but it is debatable if Warner Bros. will see this as good enough to continue the movies in what should have been a 5 movie series.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2

The blue speedy hedgehog which made its debut at number 1 last weekend falls to number 2 on its second weekend of release with £2.9 Million, a 42% drop over last weekend.

this gives the movie a total UK gross of £10.6 Million after 2 weeks of release, this is more than double the take of the first movie at the same point of release.

The movie is the 6th top film of 2022 and at this rate bound to do even better.

The Bad Guys

Proving to be a smash hit is the latest movie from the DreamWorks animated stable which this weekend takes £1.1 Million, a 51% drop over last weekend, taking the movies total UK gross to £4.8 Million.

Morbius

Sony's Spiderverse movie drops to number 4 this weekend with £740,336, a massive 77% drop over last weekend.

This gives the movie a total gross of £5 Million after 2 weekends of release, it will most likely drop out of the top 5 next weekend and end its run with about £7 Million.

Its not been good for the super villain movie especially after the success last year of Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Spider-Man: No Way Home.

The Batman

Dropping to number 5 this weekend The Caped Crusader takes £623,866 on its 6th weekend of release, a 48% drop over last weekend, giving the movie a total of £39 Million.

The movie is the top movie of 2022 so far, an honor it will loose in the coming weeks, but the film has been a success for Warner Bros. in fact it has been more successful tha Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice from 2016 which took £35 Million over its total 6 week run.

It has not been as successful though as Joker~2019 from 2019 which had taken £54 Million 6 weeks into its run on its way to £58 Million total.

Two potential blockbusters battled it out for the top spot this weekend, and with the school Easter holidays starting it was the video game adaptation Sonic the Hedgehog 2 which comfortably beat the Spiderverse Morbius.

New animated feature The Bad Guys also made its debut inside the top 3 making an all new top of the chart while at the other end of the top 15 True Things from director Harry Wootliff is new at 14 with £46,186.

UK box office QuickView

  • Highest debut - Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (@1)
  • Longest run - Belfast (11 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - The Batman (£37.8 Million)

UK box office top 5 weekend breakdown 1st - 3rd April 2022

Sonic the Hedgehog 2

The speedy blue hedgehog returns in a sequel to his surprise smash hit movie Sonic the Hedgehog from 2020.

This time he is accompanied by his buddy Tails and Dr. Ivo Robotnik has brought along Knuckles to try and defeat Sonic.

The movie makes its debut with a fantastic £4.9 Million which is a tiny bit higher than the original movie but definitely in the same ball park.

The timing of the movie could not have been better and it beats the much anticipated Morbius, altohugh Sonic 2 has had far better reviews.

Morbius

The latest movie from the Sony Pictures Spiderverse of villains which also includes Venom lands at number 2 with a debut weekend gross of £3.2 Million.

This is lower than Venom and its sequel from last year Venom: Let There Be Carnage, but considering the negative critical review and word of mouth this is perhaps understandable.

Putting the movie against Sonic was probably not the best idea, it is the start of the UK Easter holidays and the younger audience has a better appetite for a video game adaptation rather than a movie based on a villain they have probably not heard of.

The Bad Guys

Completing a trio of new films at the top of the UK box office is the new movie from DreamWorks, the same studio that brought us the Shrek series of movies.

Positive reviews and the Easter holidays have taken the movie into the top 3 with a debut gross of £2.2 Million.

The Batman

After 4 weeks at the top the lastest incarnation of the Caped Crusader falls hard to number 4 this weekend with a 5th weekend gross of £1,2 Million, a small 25% drop over last weekend.

This gives the movie a total UK gross of £37.8 Million over its 5 weeks of release and it is currently the top movie of 2022, and it is the 83 top movie ever in the UK!

Ambulance

The Micheal Bay directed Ambulance drama falls to number 5 this weekend with a second weekend total of £273,015, a 48% drop over last weekend, giving the movie a total of £1.1 Million.
