News from around the web

Following a trend set by Universal with The Invisible Man and Warner Bros. with Birds Of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn), Bloodshot starring Vin Diesel will get a release on digital March 24th, next Tuesday!

Coupled with bad reviews and not so good word of mouth the movie which was released at the box office last Friday (March 13th) the film will have one of the shortest windows of a major blockbuster.

The self isolation and lockdowns of the world during this unprecedented time of the coronavirus pandemic is setting new standards of box office to home entertainment window.

For big blockbusters the window has always been 3 - 6 months, unlike the 80's and 90's when the window from box office to VHS could be a year or more.

We live in a time now when people have much better home entertainment systems, as opposed to a 14 inch low quality TV with a mono speaker attached and the best way to see a film was at the cinema.

It will be interesting to see if this 'experiment' sets a standard or its just a temporary measure while the world deals with the viral outbreak.

As cinemas close and people decide to remain indoors due to the global coronavirus pandemic Pixar's Onward remains at the top while the Vin Diesel starring Bloodshot is the top new entry at number 2.

Onward

Pixars latest film is definitely feeling the effects of deserted cinemas as it takes only $10.6 Million on its second weekend of release.

This is down nearly 75% from last weeks total and puts the movies total at $60.3 Million.

One small glimer of hope is that Pixar films do tend to have longevity and providing the cinema closures in many US states is lifted in April and the schools might still be closed this movie could make money late in its run.

Bloodshot

Many new films have had their release dates moved due to the viral outbreak but this movie still got a release, and maybe coupled with bad reviews and word of mouth the movie enters at number 2 but to only $9.1 Million.

The road ahead does not look good for the movie and the studio may just cut its losses in the coming weeks and put the film on streaming way before expected.

I Still Believe

The faith based movie has a good opening weekend and makes its debut at number 3 with $9.1 Million.

The Invisible Man

Falling to number 4 is the Universal monster movie which takes $5.8 Million over the weekend.

This puts the movies total gross at $64.3 Million after 3 weeks of release and you cant help thinking the movie would be over the $100 million mark in a normal market.

Universal have announced that the movie will be released on streaming for $19.99 this coming Friday so it will be interesting to see what effect this has on the film box office performance, even with all the cinema closures.

The Hunt

Making its debut at number 5 is this Craig Zobel directed movie which takes $5.3 Million over the weekend.

Jumanji: The Next Level

14 weeks on the the Jake Kasdan directed movie is the longest running film on the box office and with $316.7 Million it is also the highest total grossing film this week.

In the ever increasing list of films being delayed because of the global coronavirus pandemic Fast & Furious 9 is delayed until April 2nd 2021.

The list of film getting delayed is increasing with No Time To Die, Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaways and just today The Quiet Place Part II all getting put back.

The viral outbreak is making a difference to the box office as evidence by last weekends results and with no end in sight you can't blame the studios.

Getting put back to 2021 is a strange move but Easter/Spring is clearly the best time of year for this Billion dollar franchise.

The darling of British TV makes its debut on the big screen and it was all too much for Pennywise as Downton Abbey leaves the horror film with only a single week at the top.

Downton Abbey

Making the transition from successful TV series to hit movie on the big screen the famous house from the 1920's aristocracy makes its debut at the top of the UK box office.

The films debut was maybe a little quieter than expected but it still manages a very reasonable £5.1 Million openeing.

This is in keeping woth similar films of this genre but if you compare it to It Chapter Two, a typical overhyped hollywood movie which it knocks off this week, it is a couple of million lower.

IT Chapter Two

It may be a temporary removal from the top but the Stephen King adaptation falls to number 2 this week after a single week at the top with a weekend gross of £3.1 Million.

This pushes the films total UK gross to £13.5 Million after 2 weeks of release which is £8 Million behind the first film.

Hustlers

Also entering the box office this week at number 3, starring Constance Wu and Jennifer Lopez the film makes quite an impressive debut with £1.3 Million.

The film is from director Lorene Scafaria and is based on a viral magazine column from New York about strippers taking their lives into their own hands.

Once Upon a Time ... In Hollywood

By far Tarantino best film to date the 1960 Hollywood set film falls to 4 this week with £557,889 taking its total UK gross to £19.8 Million.

The Lion King

Jon Favreau animated remake (have we stopped calling it live action now?) falls to number 5 this week with £439,795 taking its total to £73.8 Million.

It is the highest total grossing movie on the chart this week and is the second highest grossing film of the year.

Toy Story 4

Pixars animated sequel is at number 9 and has the longerst run on the chart with 13 weeks and its total gross is sitting at £64.9 Million.

It's doom and gloom for the human race as this viral video from 20th Century Fox, via MSN, shows.

Plotting the events that take place in the aftermath of Rise of the Planet of the Apes and what we will see at the start of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.
