News from around the web

Disney's Maleficent casts her spell over the video chart this weeks and knocks Tom Cruise off the top spot on her debut week of release.

Maleficent was one of the fist big summer films out of the stable this year being released on 30th May, on it's debut week it topped the box office chart with a weekend gross of £6.6 million.

It spent a total of 10 weeks on the Uk box office with five of those inside the top 5, it has grossed to date £20.5 million but is still showing in a few cinemas across London.

It is the 160th top grossing film in the UK and with a $710 million world gross is the 62nd top grossing film ever.

Last weeks top film, Edge of Tomorrow, falls to number 3 this week, leapfrogging over Disneys Frozen which hold firm at number 2.

There were a number of new films enter the chart this week, these include: Northern Soul at 4 and 2 Days to Kill at number 5, Walking on Sunshine enters at 7 while Oculus enters at 15. Belle is a new entry at 17.

As expected the movie version of Mrs. Browns Boys took the top spot at the UK box office, and with quite a strong margin over the rest.

On it's debut weekend Mrs. Brown's Boys D'Movie took an incredible £4.3 million, far higher than expected and proving that the Irish sit-com has quite a following.

I suspect that this is a fairly front loaded event and we could see it fall quite sharply, I dont think it has the lasting appeal of movie like The Inbetweeners Movie.

Falling to the runner up spot this week is The Fault in our stars which made £1.7 million from the weekend bringing it's 10 day gross to £6.7 million.

Other new film to chart this week are: - Chef at 5 - How to Train Your Drans 2 (still only on previews) at 6 - Walking on Sunshine at 7 - Cold in July at 11 - Ek Villain at 12 - Punjab 1984 at 13

This time last year Despicable Me 2 hit the top of the box office on it's debut week of release, it would go on to be the top film in the UK of 2013, it knocked Man of Steel into 2nd place.

Five years ago Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen was still the top film in the UK and Year One with Jack Black was the highest new film at 3.

Ten years ago it was still Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban at the top while the top new film of the week was Tom Hanks on Lady Killers at 4.

Fifteen years ago Brendan Fraser made a big screen comeback in The Mummy which debuted at the top of the box office knocking The Matrix into the runner up spot after only a week.

This week there is a trio of new releases which will battle it out for box office supremacy but they may have a battle on their hands with this weeks top film The Fault in Our Stars.

Biggest film of the week is Mrs Browns Boys D'Movie. The big screen debut of the BBC smash hit comedy series sees Agnes Brown and her family doing things on a bigger scale. A cult in Great Britain this could do big business and hit the top spot for a single week.

Chef is from director Jon Favreau and unlike his previous films Iron Man and Cowboys and Aliens this is a low budget low scale movie about life in a foot truck. This should see a top 5 entry on the box office.

Following on from the success of Mama Mia! and Sunshine on Leith, Walking on Sunshine is a feel good movie with lots of song performances throughout, directed by Max Giwa and Dania Pasquini this could see a top 5 entry.
