This weekend the US box office showed the first definite signs of recovery as the sequel movie A Quiet Place Part II opens to the biggest weekend of the pandemic.
Also opening big this weekend is Cruella which makes its debut in the runner up spot and worth of a mention is Raya and the Last Dragon which despite being 14 weeks old increases its weekend gross and goes over the $50 Million mark.
US box office top 5 breakdown 28th - 30th May 2021
Sequel to the 2018 movie A Quiet Place director John Krasinski takes us on another journey in the post apoplectic where a slightest sound can cost you your life.
The movie takes an amazing $48.3 Million on its debut weekend which is only 5% lower that the fist movie, and as cinemas are still not 100% open across the country you can see why the studio wanted to delay the movie.
Excellent word of mouth will take this movie through the summer and it has already become not only the summer blockbuster to see this year but a horror classic.
Disney release the Cruella De'vil origin movie on Disney+ premium as well as at theatres wich may have damaged its box office potential slightly.
Still the Emma Stone starring movie wakes a excellent $21.3 Million on its debut and enters the box office at number 2.
Spending 2 weeks at the top of the US box office the Saw sequel movie falls to number 3 this weekend.
A $2.2 Million gross is a 50% drop from last weekend and puts the movies total gross at $19.7 Million after 3 weeks of release.
The Jason Statham starring action movie falls to number 4 this weekend with $2.1 Million, a 28% drop, for a total gross of $22.1 Million after 4 weeks of release.
Spending yet another weekend in the top 5 the Disney animated tale is still taking nearly $2 Million a week at the box office, this is a 17% increase from last weekend.
The movie has now passed the $50 Million mark with a total gross of $50.8 Million after 14 weeks of release.
The much delayed Fast & Furios 9 made its debut in China this weekend and not only topped the box office there but was the biggest film of the weekend globally.
Also making a very strong first weekend on the box office is Love Will Tear Us Apart which makes its debut at number 2 this week.

Global box office top 5 breakdown 21st - 23rd May 2021
As with most movies at the moment this is over a year late coming to cinemas, but as expected the latest episode in the Fast series makes a fantastic debut.
The movie takes a very impressive $162.3 Million over its debut weekend from just 8 countries.
Also making its debut on the global box office is Chinese director Mo Sha's latest movie which takes $14.8 Million over the weekend from just 1 country.
The movie got a mid week release and has taken $30.3 Million since its debut.
As cinemas start to open the sequel movie to Peter Rabbit has gone into more and countries and hence has been around for 9 weeks.
This week the movie is at 3 with $8.4 Million from 11 countries, a 70% increase from last weekend, and it has taken a global total of $30.2 Million.
The horror franchise movie has been on the global box office for 2 weeks now and falls to 4 with $7.2 Million from 22 countries, down 40% from last weekend.
To date the movie has taken $22.5 Million globally.
Falling to number 2 this week is Guy Ritchies latest movie which takes $6.3 Million this weekend from 30 countries, 60% down, for a $65.7 Million total from 5 weeks.
Sequel movie Spiral: From the Book of Saw occupies the top spot on the US box office for a second weekend despite an almost 50% drop from last weekend while Dream Horse is the top new movie at 9 with $844,279.
Although Dream Horse was the highest new movie of the week a release release of 2020's animated Scoob! was the highest movie to appear that wasn't on last weeks chart as it had a re-entry at number 8 with $850,000.
The box office is really on the road to recovery now and but with studios waiting for the summer season to kick off properly the top 5 movie are almost static with Disney's Raya and the Last Dragon the shining movie on its 13th weekend of release.

US box office top 5 breakdown weekend 21st - 23rd May 2021
After making its debut at the top of the US box office last weekend the Saw sequel movie starring Chris Rock remains there for a second weekend with $4.55 Millon, a 55% drop.
This brings the horror movies total US gross to $15.8 Million after 10 days of release.
Guy Ritchies latest directorial outing sits at number 2 this weekend with a weekend gross of $2.9 Million, down just 21% from last weekend.
This brings the Jason Statham starring movies total US gross to $18.8 Million after 3 weeks of release.
The Angelina Jolie starring movie remains at number 3 this weekend with a gross of $1.8 Million, a 35% drop from last weekend taking its total gross to $5.5 Million after 2 weeks of release.
Now on its 13th weekend of release the Disney animated fantasy jumps back up the box office to number 4 with a gross of $1.6 Million, a very slim 2% drop from last weekend.
The movie has now taken an excellent $48 Million over its box office run and is sure to hit $50 Million by next weekend.
Another movie going back up the box office is the monster battle which this week takes $1.4 Million, a slim 6% drop from last weekend giving the movie a total gross of $96 Million over 8 weeks and looking the $100 Million milestone in the face.
As life for the cinema industry gets back to normal levels after the pandemic closed nearly all cinemas the much delayed new movie in the Saw series takes over at the top of the US box office.
The movie takes over from Wrath of Man which made its debut last weekend while Angelina Jolie's new movie Those Who Wish Me Dead makes a new entry at number 3.

Seven film in and the Saw series is still going strong and the new episode in the long running series makes its debut this week at the top of the box office.
The movie starring the Hollywood A listers Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson takes $8.72 Million over its debut weekend.
With many new movies coming out over the coming weeks and months that have been delayed and hence there is a big appetite for will effect the future performance for the movie but its a good start and should de well for the next few weeks.
After an impressive debut last weekend at the top of the box office the new movie from director Guy Ritchie falls to number 2 this weekend with $3.74 Million, a 54% drop from last weekend.
The movie after 2 weekends on the box office has now taken a total of $14.6 Million.
Making its debut at number 3 this weekend is the new movie starring Angelina Jolie which takes $2.8 Million.
Its a good debut for the movie which has had little hype and is getting a release as cinemas open and as many much delayed movie start to open.
The Japanese animated feature falls to 4 this weekend with a weekend gross of $1.7 Million, a 42% drop.
The movie has now been on the box office for 4 weeks and has taken an excellent $41.9 Million.
Disneys latest animated take was released on Disney+ premium day and date with cinemas and yet it has still managed to be on the top 5 for 11 weeks and this weekend takes $1.7 Million, just 8% down from last week.
The movie has taken an excellent $46.12 Million since release.
