With the box office chart on hold for the second time due to the lockdown in the UK we take a look at the video charts.

Fox Video's (Disney) film much delayed film from 2020 The New Mutants makes its debut at the top of the box office removing Tenet from a 3 week run at the top.

Also new is the Nicholas Cage action movie Jiu Jitsu which is new this week at number 5.

Here is a breakdown of the video charts week of 10th - 16th January 2021.

The New Mutants

Set in the X-Men universe this Marvel/20th Century Fox/Disney production has a troubled time getting a release date being moved around quite a bit before finally landing a UK release date of 4th September 2020.

It was a relatively big hit in the UK, especially considering cinemas has just re-opened and not to full capacity, but the movie made its debut at number 2 with £686,407 and went on to gross £1.5 Million.

Tenet

The 'saviour of cinema' has spent the last 3 weeks at the top of the video chart but this week gives way to the Mutant movie.

Christopher Nolans mind bending movie took £17 Million in the UK August - September 2020 and is the highest grossing movie of the COVID-19 pandemic era.

The Witches

Robert Zemeckis's adaptation of the classic Roald Dahl book skipped a theatrical release in favour of a direct to VOD release and after 4 weeks falls to number 3 on the video chart.

The Blackout

This sci-fi action movie from Russia jumps from 10 to number 4 this week as the British viewing public look for something new and exciting to watch during a period of time when there are little new releases.

Jiu Jitsu

Starring Nicholas Cage this action movie skipped cinemas in the UK and makes its debut on the video chart at number 5 this week.

As the hunger for Tenet starts to slow down across the globe it remains at the top of the global box office with a narrow lead over the Chinese movie The Eight Hundred which sits at 2.

With a reflection on how movie studios are once again concerned about the release of their films waiting for an audience there is no new films on the top end of the global box office with the highest debut Infidel at 7 with $1.3 Million.

World box office quickview

  • Number 1 - Tenet
  • Highest debut - Infidel
  • Longest run - Onward (28 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - The Eight Hundred ($425,000,000)

Here is a rundown of the global top 5 movies.

Tenet

The buzz is starting to slow down now but Warner Bros. is seeing the movies box office run as a long term thing rather than short term, this weekend the film took $25.4 Million.

The film has now taken $217.2 Million worldwide after 4 weeks of release.

The Eight Hundred

The Chinese movie that has taken nearly half a billion dollars in its native alone has started to get a release across the rest of the world and this week takes $17.7 Million.

Altohugh its not expected the movie will be as successful outside of China it will be one of the top films of the year (because of COVID-19) and so far had a total global gross of $425 Million.

Mulan

With the Disney movie going direct to VOD in much of the world the box office taking have been severely effected, altohugh tepid reviews wont have helped as the movie takes $10.9 Million this week largely from China.

This pushes the movies total global gross to $57 Million, Disney have not given and VOD data for America or Europe so its hard to compare.

In comparison over the last few years the Disney live action remakes have largely grossed over a Billion collars worldwide.

After We Collided

This sleeper hit from director Roger Kumble is at number 4 this weekend with a weekend gross of $3.8 Million giving the movie a $28.5 Million total after 4 weeks of release.

The New Mutants

At number 5 is the Disney mutant movie which has been given such a hard time, taking $3.5 million over the weekend it has a $35 million total after 4 weeks.

Although not really a fair comparison the last X-Men movie X-Men: Dark Phoenix took $252.4 Million worldwide!

Tenet remains at the top of the UK box office for a third weekend while After We Collided get an increase in cinema count and get an impressive leap to number 2.

Highest new 'movie' of the weekend is the Event Cinema release of the K-Pop band BTS in concert while the top new film is The Broken Hearts Gallery which misses out on a place on the top 5.

In a downward spiral for the second weekend running the top 15 movies grossed less than the previous weekend, this could be down to no new film being released or people not willing to venture to the cinema in the current climate, the rela test will be when the next big movie comes out, although release dates are starting to shift again.

Here is a breakdown of the top 5 movies in the UK 11th - 13th September 2020.

Tenet

No surprise that the Christopher Nolan movie is the top film in the UK for the third weekend in a row, and with a weekend gross of £1.2 Million the movie is slowing fast.

The movie has now taken £12.4 Million in the UK, the good news is its now the 8th top movie of 2020, to date.

After We Collided

After a good debut last weekend the movie got a significant increase in screen count this week giving the Roger Kumble directed movie a good boost and the movie climbs to number 2 with £422.6K.

This puts the movies total UK gross at £763.6K after 2 weeks of release.

Break the Silence: The Movie

The many fans for K-Pop band rushed out this weekend to see the bands latest live movie event to the tune of £374K making the top new entry of the week.

The New Mutants

Disney's troubles mutant movie from the X-Men universe fall to number 4 this weekend with £200.6K in takings.

This puts the movies total gross at £1.1 Million after 2 weeks of release, ironically I'm not sure if the film would have done any better in a fully functioning market!

Onward

It not all bad news for Disney as their Pixar movie Onward spends a 14th weekend the top 5, at 5, with £97.2K taking its total gross to £7.06 Million.
