$0 The US box office got off to a good start for the first quarter of the year by which time the Will Smith and Martin Lawrence movie Bad Boys For Life was the surprise top movie, then in March everything changed.
When the pandemic hit hard cinemas closed for 4 months and although there were weekly charts it was mainly from drive in theatres and studios started shifting release dates hoping things would get back to normal by the end of the year.
Tenet opened in August and it was considered Warner Bros. opened it too early and the movie despite taking $58 Million was considered a flop.
Studios have moved their films around even more since cinemas started to re-open and have gone into 2021 or been moved to streaming, but Warner Bros. again have tested the water at the end of the year with Wonder Woman 1984 which got a release on Christams day 2020 at cinemas and on HBO Max.
Disney has bypassed cinema all together on 2 of their potential biggest movie with Mulan going direct to Disney+ (for a premium price) and the Pixar movie Soul released on Christmas Day.
As it stands the top 20 movies in the US took a reasonable $1.6 Billion but compared to 2019 the top 20 took $5.8 Billion.

Starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence who return as the Miami cop duo in the third in the Bad Boys series.
The movie was a surprise box office hit on its release on 17th January and took $204.5 Million at the US box office making the top movie of the year.
Released on the 10th January (wide, it cam out in 2019 on limited to catch the Oscar deadline) the movie is based during World War one and is film as if it was a continuous single shot.
Despite not winning the best movie Oscar the film took $158 Million at the US box office and is the second best movie of 2020.
The last movie in the Skywalker Saga was released in 2019 where it took $362.1 Million and was the 6th top movie.
Because of the pandemic the movie managed to be the 3rd best film of 2020 after taking $153 Million.
After going through a strange redesign for its main character Sonic when fan feedback was not too good about his look in the trailer the movie moved to February 14th release date.
The film was a surprise hit and took $146.2 Million at the US box office making it the 4th top movie of 2020.
The sequel movie the 2017 smash hit Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle was released in 2019 where it took $175.4 Million and was the 11th top film in that year.
In 2020 the movie took $142.5 Million and is the 5th top grossing of the year.
AMC Cinema Group which owns the UK chain ODEON have announced that they will not show any more Universal movie releases because the studio has announced they will release some movies day and date at theatres and VOD (Video On Demand).
The reason Universal have made this decision is because of the apparent success and feedback the studio got after they released Trolls World Tour directly to VOD during the CODIV-19 lockdown that effected the world.
For Universal you can see why they have decided this, some movies don't perform well in cinemas and to announce they are going to release some movie on both formats day and date is an interesting move and perhaps an inevitable one, not that we agree with the move away from a theatrical release.
For AMC, which is owned by a larger company called Wanda Group, they are clearly worried about their revenue once the global lockdown is lifted, cinemas across the globe whether they be large corporate businesses or small independent local cinemas are struggling, they have had no income in the last month or so and many will close down permanently.
For both companies this is a stalemate which effects the consumer, cinemas goers want the choice, there is an inevitability that technical progress has brought us which has created a new way to watch movies (sort of), but these corporation need to think of the movie fan before fighting over revenues, after all thats what they are there for isn't it?
I suspect that when Universal release their next massive billion dollar movie AMC and ODEON will welcome the movie to their multiplexes.

It's the end of the first quarter of 2020, and with cinemas closed in the UK until further notice it seems like a good time to look at the top 10 films of 2020 so far.
Sam Mandes film is by far the top grossing film of 2020 so far, with a total gross of £43 Million it has taken more than double that of the number film.
This is no surprise from the British director, the movie saw tipped for glory at the Oscar but ended up loosing out ot Parasite, still the British public took to the World War II film.
Despite the difficult production and fan feedback for the design of Sonic when the first trailer came out, director Jeff Fowler went back to the drawing board and re-did the central character and it seems to have worked.
The movie ended up grossing a very good £19 Million, far than than was expected.
Despite an amount of disappointment from a section of the Star Wars fan base the last episode of the "Skywalker Saga" did very well over the holiday period, altohugh it is the lowest grossing of the sequel trilogy.
A gross of £18 Million in 2020 adds to the £39 Million taken in December of 2019.
Greta Gerwig's adaptation of the Louisa May Alcott classic novel was a fan favourite which took £17.7 Million at the ox office.
Many people had written this film off before release but the repairing of Will Smith and Martin Lawrence worked and the movie grossed nearly £16 Million at the UK box office.
Another surprise hit as the Robert Downey Jr. movie took £15.8 Million at the box office.
Dwayne Johnson's sequel may not have been the smash Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle was but it still manages a respectable £14.7 Million.
Winning the best film Oscar did this South Korean movie wonders as it became the highest grossing foreign language film ever in the UK with a total of £12 Million.
Guy Ritchie returns to his directiorial roots with this London based gangster movie which took £11.5 Million.
More was expected from this Harley Quinn movie starring Margot Robbie but the film under performed, it still managed a £8.8 Million total gross.
There is no stopping Doctor Strange across the globe at the moment as the Marvel film notches up a third week at the top of the global box office.
A third week gross of $103.2 million from 54 territories brings its total gross to nearly half a billion dollars, the film is still top in America and most of Europe and will get close to a billion before its run ends.
Highest new film of the week is Arrival which lands at number 3 on the global box office, Trolls stays at number 2 this week.
Arrival on its debut takes $34 million from 26 countries, after the hype and the very good reviews and audience feedback a bigger opening might have been expected, but this could be a grower and hang around for a while.
Doctor Strange is the highest total grossing movie on the box office this week but Trolls at number 2 is the widest release in 69 countries.
