News from around the web

As cinema doors remain closed and those which do open are have very limit capacity the need for a big hit is groweing ever more evident as Tenet remains at the top of the US box office for a 4th weekend.

There was a major shift in release dates last week with many Marvel film moving to 2021 and it looks like the next big hit will be the Bond movie No Time To Die in mid November, unless that moves as well!

With little to excite consumers here is the mini breakdown of the US box office.

  • Number 1 - Tenet
  • Highest debut - Break The Silence: The Movie (@3)
  • Longest run - Unhinged (7 Weeks)
  • Highest total gross - Tenet ($41,200,000)

Here is the top 5 breakdown weekend 25th - 27th September 2020.

Tenet

Christopher Nolan's movie that should have saved cinema after the COVID-19 shutdown spends a 4th weekend at the top with its latest gross of $3.4 Million, 28% down from last weekend.

The movie has now taken a quite reasonable $41.2 Million and should go over $50 quite easily, and if it can keep going into December maybe even $60 Million.

The New Mutants

Still doing well in the current climate is ill fated Disney mutant movie which remains at number 2 this weekend with $1.1 Million, down 37% from last weekend.

A five week run has given the movie $19.4 Million in total grosses in the US.

Break the Silence: The Movie

South Korean pop sensation BTS bring their concert movie to the big screen this week and is the top new movie at 3 with $1 Million.

Unhinged

The movie is has the longest run on the box office this week and takes $1 Million on its 7th weekend of release.

The low budget movie has now taken $17 Million in the US and could potentially take $20 Million before it run ends.

Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back

Celebrating its 40th anniversary the original Star Wars sequel gets a re-release on the big screen and lands at 5 with $908K, it has grossed $292.1 Million in the US since its 1980 release.

The big budget movie from Warner Bros. and Christopher Nolan, Tenet, remains at the top of the box office in a market still struggling to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic, and the figures are suggesting people are still not ready to go back to the movies!

Although Tenet is at the top the movie at number 2, After We Collided, is showing incredible business as it gives the number 1 movie a run for its money.

The top new movie of the week, the third Bill & Teds movie seems a bit of a foot note which is a real shame for the beloved characters, and the film has been given a VOD release along with its theatrical debut.

Its also worth noting that this is the first weekend since cinemas started re-opening that there is not a 'catalogue' film on the chart.

Here is your quick look box office highlights

  • Number 1 - Tenet
  • Highest debut - Bill & Ted Face The Music
  • Longest run - Onward (15 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - Tenet (£13,879,635)

Here is the UK box office top 5 rundown 18th - 20th September 2020.

Tenet

Four weeks on an the 'saviour of cinema' hasn't exactly lived up to its promise and takes under a million with £796.3K, down 35% from last week.

The movie has now made a total of £13.8 Million, not great for such a high budget movie and with tighter restrictions starting to hit the UK again it future is uncertain.

A move to VOD could be on the cards soon, but as Onward has shown films can still make money at the box office while available to view at home.

After We Collided

Remaining at number 2 this week is director Roger Kumble low budget movie which has gone from strength to strength as its theatre count has increased.

This weekend the movie took £598.2K which is up 26% from last weeks gross and 3 weeks in it has taken a total of £1.7 Million.

Bill & Ted Face the Music

Highest new entry of the weekend lands at number 3 as the Wyld Stallyns try to write their world changing hit!

The Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter starring movie lands with a weekend gross of £462K, far lower than expected and hindered by the pandemic and the VOD dual release.

Its unfair to compare movies in the current box office climate but Bill & Teds Bogus Journey debuted in January 1992 at number 1 with £2.7 Million on its way to £5.4 Million.

Andre Rieu's Magical Maastricht: Together In Music

A yearly event, musician André Rieu releases his latest Event Cinema concert which makes its debut at number 4 this week with a weekend gross of £124.1K.

Again its unfair to compare but his last release from January this year, André Rieu: 70 Years Young, entered the box office at 6 with £1.4 Million.

The New Mutants

Falling to number 5 this week is Disneys ill fated Mutant movie which takes £106.1K over the weekend, down 47%, for a £1.3 Million total.

Lots of new films this week, a couple came out on Wednesday the rest due in UK cinemas on Friday (the proper day).

Pompeii came out on Wednesday, the story of the ill fated Italian city built under Mount Vesuvius which erupted suddenly and wiped out the whole city in 79AD. Like Noah from a few weeks back this has been given the Hollywood treatment, it stars Kit Harington and Emily Browning and is directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, a top 3 opening could be on the cards.

Plastic also came out on Wednesday, a British comedy film directed by Julian Gilbey about credit card fraud. Because it's a British film expect it to enter at about 5, mage a little lower.

Brick Mansions has had a lot of hype because it is the last film Paul Walker completed before his early death last year. Interest will be high and because of this a possible top 5 entry is likely.

Tarzan is an animated CGI film which incredibly realistic looking animation. No big names and little hype, this could miss the top 10 altogether.

Out on Saturday is Bad Neighbours, Seth Rogen and Zac Efron star in this comedy about neighbours who don't quite see eye to eye, one is a family man one a college graduate. It misses out on Fridays takings but may still do well on Saturday and Sunday for a top 10 entry.
