News from around the web

It may have been the lowest grossing weekend in the US for a decade but people chose the pre Avengers: Endgame weekend to scare themselves with The Conjuring Universe horror film The Curse Of La Llorona.

The Curse of La Llorona

From the Universe of The Conjuring, Annabelle and The Nun comes another offshoot as audience in the US chose to be scared by the ever popular series.

The new film from director Michael Chaves took $26.5 million on its debut weekend of release.

Shazam!

Falling to number 2 this weekend is the DC Universe superhero movie that takes $17.3 million on its 3rd weekend of release.

The film has now taken $121 million in the US and has now surpasses $100 million milestone.

Breakthrough

Audiences not in the mood to be scared this weekend instead went for this true life drama which enters the box office at number 3 with a debut weekend gross of $11.1 million, $14.6 million with previews.

Captain Marvel

The superhero character will be in cinemas again this coming weekend as part of Avengers: Endgame, but her solo movie debut is still at number 4 on the chart this week.

The Brie Larson starring film takes $9.1 million on its 7th weekend to boost its total US gross to $400 million meaning it has now surpassed another milestone.

Little

2 weeks in and the age bending comedy falls to number 5 with a $8.4 million weeeknd pushing its total gross to $29.3 million.

Dumbo

The live action remake of the classic animation has not been the biggest hit for Disney or director Tim Burton but this week is at number 6 and surpasses the $100 million milestone after 4 weeks of release.

We're fast approaching the Christmas period and despite it still only being early in December the UK public are clearly in the mood as they take The Grinch to the top of the box office on its debut weekend.

The Grinch

Taking the box office on its debut weekend with a gross of £5.09 million the Dr Seuss favourite only just beat out last weeks top film Bohemian Rhapsody

The last time The Grinch appeared on the box office was back in 2000 in the shape of Jim Carey in a live action version directed by Ron Howard which took £3 million on its debut weekend which is about £5.2 million when adjusted for inflation.

Both films have hence sold in the same ball park as far as tickets are concerned, time will tell is this new animated version will out gross the 2000 film.

Bohemian Rhapsody

After a very successful couple of weeks at the top of the box office the Queen bio-pic falls to number 2 with a weekend gross of £4.5 million, not far behind The Grinch.

This boosts the films total Uk gross to £28.9 million and its the 10th best film of the year to date.

Widows

Acclaimed director Steve McQueen brings his latest movie which lands at 3 on its debut weekend with a gross of £2.4 million.

The film starring Viola Davis and Liam Neeson is getting a lot of positive buzz and Oscar talk to expect it to hang around until the new year and awards season.

A Star Is Born

The Bradley Cooper film is starting to fall down the chart after a very successful run and this week is at 4 with £1.2 million boosing its total to £25.4 million.

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms

Finishing off the top 5 this week is last weeks highest new film which falls hard in its second weekend, the Diney film takes £1.1 million for a £3.14 million total.

The world was in the mood for the third, and final, Logan movie this weekend as the new Wolverine film knocks last weeks for fin, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter down to number 5.

Logan has a massively wide release in 82 countries and duly makes a massive $287.8 million across the globe, more than 8 times more than the film at number 2.

With such a good start to its box office run, and great reviews Logan could go on to be one of the biggest X-Men films in the series.

The film at number 2 is Get Out which this week grosses $26.1 million globally, a fantastic gross considering the film is still only on release in 1 country, America, its total gross is now over $75 million.

After hitting the top of the global box office on its Chinese release Resident Evil 5 falls to number 5 this week with $18 million weekly take from 43 countries bringing its total to $293.9 million.

Highest total grossing movie on the global box office is Sing which has now taken $565.3 million in total and is still released in 63 counties.

A little late reporting on this weeks charts with the figures arriving the following weekend due to the Christmas break.

UK audiences were in the mood for the Galaxy Far Far Away over the Christmas week with Rogue One staying at the top, maybe a fitting tribute as we said goodbye to Princess Leah.

With the new coming in over the festive period that actress Carrie Fisher sadly passed away what better tribute to pay than keeping Rogue One: A Star Wars Story at number one with £5.6 million on its second weekend.

This brings the films total gross to £33.9 million, an excellent gross in normal circumstances but this is a star wars film and the film is falling far short of last years Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens.

Highest new entry of the week is Passengers which after bad reviews still manages to land at number 2 with £2.4 million.

Both stars Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt are involved with high grossing franchises so this is by no means a big opening for them and with the no so good reviews the film could sink quite quick.

Longest running film on the chart this week is Trolls which has been around for 10 weeks not and highest total grossing movie is Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them which has now grossed £47,469,530 after 6 weeks.

Production is currently underway on the two Hobbit films and as you'd maybe expected there is a video blog/diary being made following the production. The first is up at the Peter Jackson Facebook page and I really do urge you to go and watch it, it really is brilliant, http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=10150223186041807&oid=141884481557&comments

The video is a very generous 10 minutes of pure brilliance presented by Jackson himself, how he finds the time is anyone's guess. He takes you on a tour of some of the sets that have been reproduced from the original Lord of the Rings trilogy 12 years ago as well as teases some new sets.

We get to see a get together of the cast on the first day of filming on the Bag End set, see a dozen full sized actors gather around a Hobbit kitchen table, and we get to see returning actors Ian McKellen and Andy Serkis.

It always amazes me when I see things like this how much work clearly goes into the post production of films of this magnitude to get the sets looking so stunning, the sets looks amazing don't get me wrong, but when you see the finished product with all the lighting and post production polish they look simply stunning.

Have a look at this making of video as it really in incredible, and start praying for the rest of this year and next year to go as fast as possible because these films are going to be brilliant, and if you had any doubts about Jackson directing the films just take a moment to take in the guys enthusiasm about the production, I'm so glad he's in charge.

What did you think? Is this a very generous 10 minutes to get us in the mood for the film? Or 10 minutes of pure hype?
