News from around the web

Cinemas and hence box office takings have been hit hard with the coronavirus outbreak and with many people choosing not to leave their homes Onward remained at the top although with a big drop from the previous weekend, The Hunt defied expectations and was the top new film at number 3.

Onward

Pixars latest movie remained at the top of the UK box office over the weekend altohugh the gross for the movie was 62% down from the previous weekend as the film took £1.2 Million.

This brings the films total UK gross to £5.2 Million after 2 weeks of release.

Onward is the only film on the UK box office this weekend which has taken over a Million pound.

The Invisible Man

Remaining at number 2 this week is the Universal monster movie which takes £827,746.

This pushes the movies total gross to £6.5 Million after 3 weeks of release.

The movie is being released on home streaming platforms next week for $19.99 and a similar situation can be expected in the UK in the coming weeks.

The Hunt

Highest new film of the week is the latest film from director Craig Zobel which makes its debut at number 3 with £542,475.

Bloodshot

After bad reviews from critics and audiences alike the new superhero movie starring Vin Diesel can only manage a number 4 debut with £444,917.

This can be seen as the first movie to suffer from the coronavirus pandemic as despite this the movie would have scored a much higher debut, many film set for release in the coming weeks have been delayed including Diesel's own Fast and Furious 9.

In a surprising, but expected move the studio has announced the movie will be released on streaming services in the US from next Tuesday, March 24th which may well kill the film box office run.

Interestingly over the Monday - Sunday week the film would not have hit the top 5 making its debut at number 8!

Military Wives

The film about a women singing group comprising wives of men in active service drops to number 5 this weekend with £407,409 giving the film a £2.3 Million total after 2 weeks.

Over the Monday - Sunday week the film would have been number 3 with a weekend gross of £1.4 Million.

1917

The much praised and awarded war movie is the highest total grossing move this week with £43.7 Million and the movie with the longest chart run with 10 weeks.

With the release of a new Disney Pixar movie we get a new number film film as Onward makes its debut at the top knocking off The Invisible Man while British movie Military Wives makes its debut at number 3.

Onward

Disney and Pixar release their latest movie and first film in a while that is not a sequel which makes its debut at the top of the box office with £3.4 Million.

The outbreak of the Coronavirus has had an impact on the box office and this films debut gross is lower than expected.

Depending on how things pan out this could have a major effect on the current releases, but Disney have the power to keep this in cinemas as we could see a boost over the upcoming Easter holidays.

The Invisible Man

Falling to number 2 after a single week at the top Universals alternative monster movie takes £1.5 Million over the weekend to give it a £5 Million total gross after 2 weeks of release.

Military Wives

Following the fortunes of a group of British women who husbands are on active duty who come together to form a quire the movie makes its debut at number 3 with just under a million.

Movies like this have always done well in the UK and although this doesn't have the same pull as the likes of Calendar Girls the film could see a long run at the box office.

Sonic the Hedgehog

The former number 1 Jim Carrey starring video game adaptation falls to number 4 this week with £951,103 which give it a £18 Million total after 4 weeks of release.

Parasite

Finally on the top 5 is the Oscar winning movie which this week becomes the highest grossing foreign language film in the UK as its gross goes to £11 Million after 5 weeks.

The movies weekend gross is £529,550, the whole of the top 5 having clearly been hit by the public not going to their local multiplexes.

1917

The highest total grossing movie and the longest run on this weeks box office with £43 Million after 9 weeks of release.

Based on the true story of a group military wives who form a choir called The Military Wives Choirs the film has been given a 12A age rating by the BBFC in the UK.

The Military Wives were a group brought together by British vocal couch Gareth Malone, the group had a Christmas number 1 single in 2011.

The movie stars Kristin Scott Thomas, Jason Flemyng and Sharon Horgan and is directed by Peter Cattaneo.

Comparisons will be made to the smash hit movie Calendar Girls from 2003 which went on to gross £20 Million in the UK.

The movie has been given a 12A rating by the BBFC for infrequent strong language, moderate sex references and has a runtime of 112 minutes (1 hour 42 minutes), the film was passed uncut.

It has a release date in the UK of 6th March 2020.
