News from around the web

Cinemas in the US are starting to close down again rather than re-open and release dates are starting to get changed and removed altogether from schedules so its drive-in movie showings which once again shine.

Disney's live action remake of Beaty And The Beast from 2017 is this weeks top film and with nothing in the way of new release there is nothing to report on that front, in fact the whole top 5 this week are all re-released.

Here is the top 5 movies in the US 17th - 19th July 2020

Beauty and the Beast

Originally released in mid-March of 2017 Disney continued their live action re-make succes with this tale as old as time, it made over $500 Million on its initial run.

This week it takes $467K which pushes the movies total to $504 Million.

Iron Man

Released May of 2009 the movie is credited with really kicking off the Marvel Cinematic Universe from Disney and succeeded where Hulk had failed previously.

This week the movie is at number 2 with $430K which brings the movies total gross to $318.6 Million.

Bohemian Rhapsody

The 2019 Oscar winning movie is at number 3 this week with a gross of $240K which boosts its total in the US to $216.4 Million.

Jurassic Park

This movie from director Steven Spielberg never seems to lose popularity and once again appears in the top 5 27 years after first release with $210K giving it a $403.5 Million total.

The Goonies

An '80 classic movie is at number 5 with a weekend take of $202K for a total US gross of $62.5 Million.

Making its debut this weekend is the awards favourite Darkest Hours Starring Gary Oldman.

The film makes its debut at number 1 with a weekend gross of £4 million.

Falling to number 2 this week after a week at the top, but on its fourth weekend is Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle with takes £2.4 million for a £29 million total gross.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri makes its debut at number 3, and with a good Golden Globes showing it takes £2.3 million for the weekend.

Finishing off the top 5 is The Greatest Showman at number 4 and Insidious: The Last Key at number 5.

Worth mentioning is Star Wars: The Last Jedi which this week takes over Beaty And The Beast at the top grossing film released in 2017.

This weekend with the release of the highly anticipated Ridley Scott film Alien: Covenant we were always going to see a new film at the top, and Guardians gets push off by the Alien movie.

Despite the mediocre reviews the films launch has it enter the top with a weekend gross of &5.1 million, compared to its predecessor Prometheus this is a million lower.

Falling from the top is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 after a couple of weeks at the top, a £3,2 million weekend brings the films total to £33 million after 3 weeks of play.

Studios were a bit nervous to release new films against the Alien movie but Miss Sloan starring hot property Jessica Chastain entered the chart at 8 with just over £190,000.

Also new was the Cinema event feature Der Rosenkavalier: Met Opera 2017 which took a little over £313,000 and is at 6.

Beaty and The Beast is the longest running film on the box office with 9 weeks of release and has taken an amazing £71 million, its the 8th top grossing film ever in the UK.

Historical Charts

A year ago - Captain America Civil War remained at the top for a third week despite heavy competition from The Angry Birds Movie which entered at number 2.

Five years ago - Making it three weeks at the top was Avengers Assemble while Dark Shadows entered highest at number 3.

Ten years ago - Spider-Man 3 stayed at the top for a second weekend while 28 Weeks Later entered highest at number 2.

Fifteen years ago - About a Boy was the top film of the week for a third time while Dog Soldiers was the top new film at 3.

Twenty years ago - Staying at the top was Liar Liar while the top new film was at number 4 int the shape of Anaconda.

Twenty five years ago - Basic Instinct entered the chart at the top under a blanket of controversy while The Hand That Rocks The Cradle fell to number 2 on its 4th week of release.

There is still no stopping the live action Beaty and The Beast~2017 as it holds off Scarlett Johansson in Ghost in The Shell~2017 as the manga adaptation debuts at number 2.

On its third weekend at the top of the UK box office Beaty and The Beast~2017 takes £6.7 million, yet again another excellent weekend gross.

This brings the films total gross to a fantastic £51 million over its 3 week UK release and by far makes it the top film of the year.

Making its debut in second place this weekend is the live action adaptation of the 1996 Manga film Ghost in The Shell.

Taking a relatively good £2.3 million the film has done well, but with the hype and mainly positive reviews we should have been looking at a higher debut.

Maybe the film will be a slow burner and with many teens on Easter holidays this could do well over the coming weeks.

I'm sure its not escaped your attention that the top 2 films this week are live action versions of classic animations.

Also new this week is Smurfs The Lost Village at number 3 with £1.3 million, this film will do well in the next couple of weeks and could challenge Beauty and The Beast~2017 for the top spot.

Free Fire is at number 7 and the special cinema event in aid of Comic Relief Peter Kays Car Share A Second Series Celebration lands at number 10, and it was only shown in one cinema chain!

Many long running films are not around anymore hence the longest running film this week is Logan which has been around 5 weeks while Beauty and The Beast~2017 is the top total grossing movie.

This week animated feature The Boss Baby takes a command over the box office and removes Beaty and The Beast from the top.

Making its debut this week Dreamworks new franchise film The Boss Baby which grosses $50 million on its debut.

The animations studio last release Home had an impressive run and debuted just a shade higher, if The Boss Baby can do similar numbers then were looking at close to $200 million US gross.

It was a close run race but Beaty and The Beast falls to number 2 with $47.5 million, the films total US gross is now $395 million after 3 weeks of release.

Ghost in The Shell makes its debut at number 3 this week with $19 million and much further down the box office is The Zookeepers Wife at number 10 with a debut of $3.3 million.

Highest total grossing movie on the US box office is Beaty and The Beast while the longest running film is Get Out, 6 weeks of release and this week is at number 7.
